The Interpretation Of The Curriculum In Terms Of Projects, Catherine Francis O'Grady
The Interpretation Of The Curriculum In Terms Of Projects, Catherine Francis O'Grady
Bachelors’ Theses
This thesis is an attempt to show that through the utilization of projects the subject matter of the present curriculum functions as it should, is mastered more effectively, and learned more thoroughly because the project procedure is in complete accordance with the laws of learning. The writer desires, furthermore, to point out in particular a significant aspect of the project procedure, a corollary which appears on analysis truly phenomenal; roughly stated it is the fact that in a project procedure manifold opportunities are being constantly presented whereby desirable attitudes and ideals may most appropriately be fixed.

Adjusting Secondary School Instruction To Individual Differences, Mary Ursula Garder

Our twentieth-century secondary schools face a problem scarcely thought of in the previous century. The "high school” student body no longer consists of the select few who are preparing for a college career, but rather of the majority of the elementary school graduates.

The Relation Of Athletics To The Adolescent Boy, Peter Francis Murphy Jr.
Bachelors’ Theses
The adolescent period, or "youth," as it is sometimes called, extends from the arrival of puberty to the attainment of maturity,. This period, therefore, begins about the twelfth or thirteenth year and is brought to a close in about the twenty first year, and for that reason is frequently termed the "teen" age.
The adolescent stage of life is usually split into three divisions, each overlapping the other, and these divisions are called for convenience, early, middle and late adolescence. The first extends from the twelfth to the fifteenth year, the second from the fourteenth to the eighteenth, and the …

American institutions are the expressions of American spirit and American opportunity. The growth of schools and churches is the witness.

Development And Utility Of Achievement Tests, Arthur M. Schwan
Development And Utility Of Achievement Tests, Arthur M. Schwan
Bachelors’ Theses
Scientific measurement is not a novel thing. As a matter of fact, educators are and have always been confirmed users of measurement, measurement of a kind. For several generations teachers have been employing tests which to the uninitiated observer would differ from standard tests in only one respect. The teachers ·test is usually written on the blackboard while the standard test is usually printed on paper. Present a standard test to a teacher or principal who never heard of one, and neither will recognize that it is possessed of any peculiar virtue or potent dangers. Ayres tells us: "If Dr. …

Extra-curricular activities in the secondary school are those which are not provided for in the regular curriculum, but are an essential part in the regular program. The Development Of Roman Schools And Education, Katharine C. Davy
The Development Of Roman Schools And Education, Katharine C. Davy
Bachelors’ Theses
Education develops as a nation progresses. Roman education paralleled the growth of the Roman state. Thus we find three stages in the development of education, corresponding to the development and expansion of Rome. In the first period of the early Republic, education was elementary and solely a preparation for life and service to the state. In the second period, when Rome is expanding, fighting the Punic war, and extending its boundaries, education is coming under the Greek influence and culture. In the third period, when Rome is an empire, a world state, education is Graeco-Roman; broadened and expanded to include …

The Need Of Public Junior Colleges In Utah, Evan B. Murray
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
“The need for junior colleges becomes more urgent from year to year. I would recommend that the legislature make provision for the establishment and maintenance of state junior colleges at such centers as it may deem advisable.” This is a quotation from state Superintendent C. N. Jensen.
The following study is intended to answer, to a degree at least, the two questions inherent in this statement: namely, Is there a need for state junior colleges in Utah? If there is a need, where should they be established?
Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan
Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan
Bachelors’ Theses
There are several reasons why our pupils have not learned 1 to talk well: 1. There has not been enough of oral language work, as a separate and distinct training, in the elementary school. 2. Oral work has not been utilized as much as it ought to be as an aid, and a preparation for, written work. A child who is to be taught to write well, must first be taught to talk well. 3. The other school subjects have not been utilized as effectively as they might be to develop power in oral composition. 4. The school has constantly …

A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson
A Study Of High School And College Grades, Ivy Bernice Wilkinson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The task I have set myself is one to which my interest has been led by a varied experience in high school teaching followed by several years teaching in college where our high school product is largely disposed of. In all that experience the giving of grades was a bugbear, a necessary evil apparently, and it occurred to me that if those grades had or could be made to have some value beyond the moment, sone directive or prognostic value, they might lose their 111-reputation in the minds of both pupil and teacher. With this thought in mind I interviewed …

The Platoon Plan, Ethel May Gardner
The Platoon Plan, Ethel May Gardner
Bachelors’ Theses
The educational history of the United States during the past quarter of a century has been marked by the sporadic appearance of pedagogic plans, or devices, which have been heralded as panaceas for the cure of the multitudinous ills of large city school systems. Most of these administrative devices have been originated in small towns, as their names testify - Batavia plan, Dalton plan, Gary plan. Under the double title of "work-study-play, or platoon plan," the last named has assumed the proportions of a national movement, on account of the opportunities which its promoters have had to promulgate it through …
The Development Of The High School In The United States, Mary Renata Colvin
The Development Of The High School In The United States, Mary Renata Colvin
Bachelors’ Theses
The making of American institutions and the making of American character, can hardly be thought of as distinct processes, but are two aspects of one process. The one cannot be understood apart from the other. Schools have always occupied a position midway between church and state. In the early days they were affected more strongly by ecclesiastical considerations, in more recent times, by considerations more political. Among the schools too, the high schools hold an intermediate position. They have been, and are influenced by educational institutions above and below them. Speaking in a general way, secondary education is an education …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
As one peers across the vistas of the past two types of holy men stand out with striking prominence and significance. The advance of religious thought and life has largely been due to the activities and contributions of these two, the priest and the prophet.
It has been the purpose of this research to seek to discover the particular functions of each of these, to show their correlation in producing religious advance, and to make certain suggestions as to how the values each has to contribute to the program of the modern Christian church may be more adequately realized.

Human Geography In The Upper Grades Of The Elementary School, Helen T. Kelly

Since school geography, at lea.st in the mind or the teacher and the curriculum maker, must be a portion of the science of geography as defined by the authorities in the field, it is important that those who teach geography as well as those who plan courses of study should know the varying emphasis which different geographers have placed in interpreting and organizing this science.
Aims And Methods Of Teaching History In The Junior High School, Marguerite Mcnicholas
Aims And Methods Of Teaching History In The Junior High School, Marguerite Mcnicholas
Bachelors’ Theses
Our social inheritance from the past coupled with our visionary hopes for the future, tend to alter, in each few generations, the objectives of education. As Americans, we were early exponents of the present world ideal of political democracy. The devotion of democracy to education is evident. A democratic society must have a type of education which gives individuals a personal interest in social relationships and control, and the habits of mind which secure social changes without producing disorder. "It therefore becomes necessary for each generation to take stock of its ideals and of the activities of its people, to …
The Teaching Of History In The Grades, Alice Brierton
The Teaching Of History In The Grades, Alice Brierton
Bachelors’ Theses
In considering the teaching of history in the grades, one must necessarily begin with a clear-cut statement of what he means by history.
The time has long since passed when students consider history a record of war and strife and reconciliation; when they regard it as a summary of meaningless dates doled out to them to be memorized. They realize that History is not one of these, but when they are asked to define it, they cannot answer so easily.
From a group of forty seventh and eighth grade children whom I asked to give their own definition of History, …
