Examining The Influence Of Principals’ Transformational Leadership In Promoting Conducive School Culture And Secondary Esl Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Chanda Yvonne Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
Secondary ESL teachers face diverse classrooms and complex instructional demands. As the number of multilingual learners continues to increase in secondary schools, ESL teachers must support students’ language development while also helping them access rigorous academic content across subject areas. This phenomenological study explored how principals’ transformational leadership and school culture influence secondary ESL teachers’ self-efficacy. Drawing on Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory (1997) and Bass’s Transformational Leadership Theory (1985), the study examined how leadership behaviors and school environments shape teachers’ confidence and motivation. Semi-structured interviews with 10 ESL teachers in a southeastern metropolitan district elicited focused accounts of how specific leadership …
Exploring The Barriers That Preclude Black Males From Pursuing Careers In Education, Marco Darnell French
Exploring The Barriers That Preclude Black Males From Pursuing Careers In Education, Marco Darnell French
Student Theses and Dissertations
The underrepresentation of African American males in the K–12 teaching workforce remains a critical issue with implications for educational equity, student outcomes, and workforce diversity. Despite ongoing efforts to diversify the profession, African American males continue to be disproportionately absent from classrooms, particularly in rural settings, limiting opportunities for culturally affirming instruction and mentorship. This study explored the barriers that preclude African American males from pursuing and persisting in careers in K–12 education within a rural Louisiana school district. Guided by Critical Race Theory, this qualitative revelatory single case study centered the lived experiences of African American males to examine …
Strategies And Practices For Improving Enrollment And Persistence By Native American Students In An Oklahoma Post-Secondary Education Institution, Mickey Jack
Student Theses and Dissertations
The historical oppression of Native Americans created a distrust in the educational system in American which was based on European models and designed for the advancement of white settlers. This historical oppression transcends generations and stills exists in our educational system. As a result, Native American students represent less than 1% of the student population in post-secondary education systems nation-wide. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify what strategies and practices were most effective for improving enrollment and persistence among Native American students in Oklahoma post-secondary education based on a transformative framework and TribalCrit. Three Native American …

Educator Perceptions Of The Impact Of The Avid Program On Minority Students’ School Achievement, Genia Smith
Student Theses and Dissertations
While Hispanic and African American college enrollment rates have increased over the past 20 years, minority students continue to face structural and educational barriers that make it more challenging for them to prepare for and gain entry to college. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is a college preparatory initiative designed to provide additional academic and social support for historically disadvantaged students. Guided by a socio-cultural theoretical framework, this mixed-methods survey-based study explored the perceptions of 10 administrators and 10 teachers in a Southeast region school district regarding the impacts of AVID on minority students’ achievement. The findings revealed …
Examining The Influence Of Job Demands And Resources On The Psychological Well-Being Of Arkansas Teachers, Amy C. Erstine
Examining The Influence Of Job Demands And Resources On The Psychological Well-Being Of Arkansas Teachers, Amy C. Erstine
Student Theses and Dissertations
Teachers across the United States are experiencing declining psychological well-being due to increasing job demands and insufficient workplace resources. In Arkansas, this imbalance contributes to burnout, attrition, and persistent teacher shortages, affecting not only educators but also students, schools, and communities. Job resources are positively associated with well-being, whereas job demands are negatively associated with well-being. Understanding the job resources and demands influencing teacher well-being is critical to sustaining a stable and effective teaching workforce. The purpose of this non-experimental and predictive study was to examine the influence of job demands and resources on the psychological well-being of currently licensed …
The Impact Of Academic Advising Models On Undergraduate Student Performance: A Multiple Regression Analysis, Kayla Meaders
The Impact Of Academic Advising Models On Undergraduate Student Performance: A Multiple Regression Analysis, Kayla Meaders
Student Theses and Dissertations
Institutions of higher education continue to seek effective strategies to improve student persistence, academic performance, and degree completion. Academic advising is widely recognized as a key institutional support that helps students navigate academic requirements and institutional expectations. However, universities organize advising services using different structural models, and limited empirical evidence exists regarding how these models influence measurable student outcomes. This study examined the predictive relationship between academic advising models and undergraduate student success outcomes at a public university in North Texas. The study investigated the extent to which advising models, centralized or decentralized, predict cumulative grade point average, first-to-second-year retention, …

Understanding Principal Perspectives On What Professional Learning Supports Sustained School Improvements: A Qualitative Case Study, Kristen Hope Fondren
Student Theses and Dissertations
Principals leading schools identified for comprehensive support and improvement face demands related to rapid improvement, instructional reform, and sustaining gains over time. Although districts provide professional learning, limited understanding exists regarding which supports principals perceive as most meaningful in turnaround contexts. This qualitative multiple case study explored how principals in the Florida Panhandle perceived professional learning supports that strengthened leadership capacity, supported exiting improvement status, and sustained school improvement. Guided by a constructivist framework, the study examined how principals constructed meaning from their professional learning experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six principals who successfully led schools out …

Student Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative phenomenological study, the motivations, learning experiences, challenges, and triumphs of African American genealogists and family historians will be revealed. The purpose of this study is to bridge the existing gap in the literature regarding the experiences of these individuals. The interconnectedness of self-directed learning and self-determination theory will demonstrate how these genealogists approach researching their ancestors, who were both enslaved and free people of color. Themes that arise from feedback from interviews will be used to offer answers to the research questions.
Perceptions Of Trauma-Informed Trained Campus Leadership, Shelly Hardin
Perceptions Of Trauma-Informed Trained Campus Leadership, Shelly Hardin
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as potentially traumatic experiences that occur in a person’s life between birth and age 17. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2024), more than two thirds of children experience at least one traumatic event by the age of 16, and this is likely an underestimate, as this percentage represents only those cases reported. The physical, emotional, and neurological impact of traumatic experiences can be detrimental to a child’s education, often contributing to learning deficits and behavioral issues. School leaders have the responsibility of creating …
The Efficacy Of Open Educational Resources On Achievement Outcomes In Higher Education Institutions, Charles Trevor Alder
The Efficacy Of Open Educational Resources On Achievement Outcomes In Higher Education Institutions, Charles Trevor Alder
Theses and Dissertations
Achievement gaps remain a concern in higher education, reflected in differences in academic performance, retention, and persistence. These gaps often affect students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and underserved populations. Open educational resources (OER) have been suggested to reduce financial barriers and support student success. This study examined whether student-level and institutional-level factors predict academic performance in a business management course using OER. Average quiz scores were collected from students across 12 higher education institutions and analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling. Colleges were included in the analysis to determine whether outcomes differed based on the proportion of minority and Pell-eligible students. …
Teacher Retention: Do Job Satisfaction, Support From Administrators, Professional Development Opportunities, Student Behavior, And School Culture Directly Affect Whether A Teacher Decides To Stay At A School Or Leave?, Robert Dawson Parrott
Education Theses and Dissertations
Teacher retention has reached crisis levels nationwide, with nearly 50% of beginning teachers leaving within five years. Teacher attrition increased to 27.3% in 2022–2023 in a large suburban school district in North Texas. This translated to over $1.1 million dollars in teacher salary expenditures alone. This Dissertation in Practice utilized mixed-methods research grounded in Improvement Science and Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to explore five campus-level contributors to teacher retention that fell under the control of building-level administrators: job satisfaction, administrative support, professional development, campus culture, and student behavior supports. In Phase 1 a teacher intent survey (n = 63) and focus group …

By investigating the integration of culturally responsive teaching strategies during instruction, improvements can be made to the effectiveness of professional development centered on culturally responsive teaching strategies found in the Ready for Rigor framework. The conceptual framework that served as the foundation for this study was Hammond’s (2015) Ready for Rigor framework. Questionnaires, …
If It Doesn't Hurt You Aren't Working Hard Enough: An Examination Of Coach Experience In High School Debate, Rosie Valdez Block
If It Doesn't Hurt You Aren't Working Hard Enough: An Examination Of Coach Experience In High School Debate, Rosie Valdez Block
Student Theses and Dissertations
High school debate coaching constitutes a uniquely demanding educational role, defined by emotional labor, extended work hours, institutional precarity, and systemic inequities. Despite their significant contributions to students’ intellectual and personal growth, the professional sustainability of debate coaches remains underexamined. This dissertation investigates the conditions contributing to burnout among high school debate coaches through the theoretical lenses of Maslach’s Burnout Theory, as contemporized by Edú-Valsania et al. (2022), and teacher self-efficacy theory, to understand how emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished professional confidence emerge in this context. The study is further guided by constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014), enabling a bottom-up, …
College Success Comparison Between First-Generation College Students And Non-First-Generation College Students In The South Texas Plains, Obed Guerrero
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study examined differences in academic success between first-generation college students and non-first-generation college students enrolled in community colleges in the South Texas region. National research has consistently reported that first-generation college students tend to experience lower academic outcomes; however, limited empirical evidence exists regarding whether these disparities persist within South Texas, a region characterized by a high Hispanic student population and a substantial proportion of first-generation students. This gap limits the ability of institutions to make context-specific decisions that support student success. The purpose of this study was to compare grade point average, fall-to-fall retention, and graduation outcomes between …
Under Pressure: Effects Of The Hot Docs Behavioral Parent Training Program On Caregiver Blood Pressure, Bria N. Ferera
Under Pressure: Effects Of The Hot Docs Behavioral Parent Training Program On Caregiver Blood Pressure, Bria N. Ferera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic stress is heightened for caregivers of children with heightened disruptive behaviors. With chronic stress supported as a major factor leading to maladaptive parenting and caregiving practices, exploring new ways to collect data on parenting stress remains a critical research priority (van der Lubbe et al., 2024). Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) programs are linked to improved parent-child relationships and reduced problem behavior (Armstrong, 2006; Agazzi, 2021; Patrusky, 2025). However, few studies have used physiological biomarkers in conjunction with self-reported measures to explore connections in this area. Similarly, other physiological considerations are rarely considered upon evaluation of the impacts of BPT …

Enrollment in online courses in higher education has been rising rapidly over the past couple of decades and has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic. This has made higher learning more accessible for students who would otherwise have difficulty earning a degree. Online education poses many barriers to students’ development of a sense of belonging, something research has been found to be of great importance to student success and well-being. Relatively little was known about students’ sense of belonging in online learning environments prior to the pandemic. Since the pandemic, online education has undergone major changes, changing the landscape in a …
Why Gentlemen Prefer Chi Omega: The Impact Of The Sorority Tier System On The Member Experience, Cameron Pannell
Why Gentlemen Prefer Chi Omega: The Impact Of The Sorority Tier System On The Member Experience, Cameron Pannell
ETDs from 2020-2029
Sorority life is situated in a social hierarchy, in which the hierarchical tiers are determined by sorority women’s feminine worth. The hierarchical system in sorority life originates from women’s pursuit of hegemonic femininity. This study utilized semi-structured interviews of eight sorority women to fulfill the purpose of this study, which was to investigate how the sorority tier system shapes members’ experiences in Greek life and in college. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study reveal that access to top-tier chapters is limited to elite women; women choose their chapter either for deep connections or for reputation …
Leadership In Parent Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of School Principals’ Preparedness To Lead Parent Engagement, Aqila Malpass
Leadership In Parent Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of School Principals’ Preparedness To Lead Parent Engagement, Aqila Malpass
ETDs from 2020-2029
Researchers consistently report a strong positive correlation between parent engagement and student achievement. When parents are engaged, students benefit in all grade levels and backgrounds (Auerbach, 2010; Epstein, 2011; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2005; Weiss et al., 2010). Policy-makers and educators acknowledge the influence of parent engagement on student outcomes (Mapp, 2012). Consequently, communities need effective parent engagement systems and structures within their schools. Principals should understand parent engagement and be equipped to lead its implementation in their schools. It is also necessary to identify key training and support conditions that help to equip principals to lead effective parent …
Exploring Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices Among Female Leaders In Title I Schools: Strategies For Enhancing Student Success, Tara K. Indar
Exploring Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices Among Female Leaders In Title I Schools: Strategies For Enhancing Student Success, Tara K. Indar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The academic achievement gap between White students and diverse student populations remains a persistent and prominent disparity in schools across the United States. While this issue affects schools nationwide, it is particularly significant in Title I schools, where many students from diverse, lower-socioeconomic-status backgrounds are served. Although a substantial body of literature examines this gap and highlights the positive impact of culturally responsive leadership, there remains a limited understanding of which specific practices are most effective in improving students’ academic outcomes. This study explores the perceptions of female school leaders in Title I schools regarding the strategies they believe contribute …
Teacher Perceptions On Optimizing Instructional Practices For English As A Second Language Instruction, Molly Elizabeth Davis
Teacher Perceptions On Optimizing Instructional Practices For English As A Second Language Instruction, Molly Elizabeth Davis
Student Theses and Dissertations
The rapid growth of English learners (ELs) in middle schools across Northwest Arkansas has intensified the need for instructional practices that effectively support English language acquisition while promoting equitable academic outcomes. Despite the presence of district-level English as a Second Language (ESL) policies, inconsistencies remain in how instructional practices are implemented at the classroom level. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to examine middle school teachers’ perceptions of instructional practices that optimize ESL instruction, explore the alignment between teacher practices and district policy, and identify challenges educators face in implementing effective strategies. Guided by Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural …
Examining The Influence Of Students’ Socioeconomic Background And Teachers’ Perceived Stress On Their Burnout In A Rural Arkansas Delta School District, Tessa C. Cripe
Student Theses and Dissertations
Teacher burnout presents ongoing challenges in high-poverty rural schools, affecting teacher retention and instructional quality. In the Arkansas Delta, educators frequently navigate complex professional and emotional demands. The purpose of this convergent parallel mixed-methods study was to examine the influence of students’ socioeconomic background and teachers’ perceived stress on overall teacher burnout and each of its dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Perceived stress was measured using the PSS-10, a unidimensional instrument that assesses the appraisal of stress, or how unpredictable life feels. The study was guided by the Maslach Burnout Theory and the Job Demands-Resources framework. Quantitative …
Coming To The Table: How Black Mamas Resist And Reorganize The Racialized Educational Terrain In Community, Moriah Lynn Johnson
Coming To The Table: How Black Mamas Resist And Reorganize The Racialized Educational Terrain In Community, Moriah Lynn Johnson
Dissertations
Black homeschooling has grown significantly among African American families, yet existing scholarship has not fully theorized how race, gender, and institutional power operate within homeschooling communities. My dissertation examines how Black mothers resist and reorganize a racialized educational terrain that extends beyond conventional schooling into homeschooling spaces. Drawing on Diamond’s (2006) racialized educational terrain framework, I introduce the Racialized Homeschooling Terrain (RHT) — an original conceptual framework that demonstrates how homeschooling spaces are racialized in similar and distinct ways. This framework centers Black maternal agency, as moms interpret, resist, and reorganize homeschooling spaces to construct communal homeplace. Using a qualitative, …

Responsive Rigor And Strategic Care: Faculty Praxis For Holistic Student Success In The Community College, Jennifer Elizabeth Kelley
Responsive Rigor And Strategic Care: Faculty Praxis For Holistic Student Success In The Community College, Jennifer Elizabeth Kelley
Dissertations
This qualitative study examines how community college faculty conceptualize, communicate, and enact academic rigor and care in their teaching practice. While post-pandemic debates have positioned rigor and care as opposing forces—evident in the "Rigor Wars" that framed care as performative laxity and rigor as gatekeeping—community college faculty successfully integrate these practices to support holistic student success. This research addresses critical gaps in higher education scholarship, which has studied rigor and care separately, focused primarily on four-year institutions, and overlooked faculty perspectives on how integration occurs in practice. Drawing on a single-case study of 38 faculty members at a large Midwestern …

Being Desi At School: Exploring The Racialized School Experiences Of South Asian American Youth, Prabha Kaundinya
Being Desi At School: Exploring The Racialized School Experiences Of South Asian American Youth, Prabha Kaundinya
Dissertations
Schools in America have been central areas for racialization, and as an immigrant, racial-ethnic minority population, South Asian American (SAA) students have been subjected to a variety of racialization processes (S. J. Lee et al., 2017; Rice, 2017, 2019; Subedi, 2013). However, what is known about SAA educational experiences is often based on celebratory stereotypes that proclaim their uniform success while neglecting attention towards the diversity of their needs (including academic, social-emotional, or mental health needs; Saran, 2015; Ngo & Lee, 2007; P. Patel & Patel, 2017; Pedraza & Guillaume, 2023; N. Sharma et al., 2020). This dissertation uses a …
The Year Of Birth Age Grouping Policy: Its Impact On Participation In Us Youth Soccer, Murray James Findlay
The Year Of Birth Age Grouping Policy: Its Impact On Participation In Us Youth Soccer, Murray James Findlay
Dissertations
In 2016, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) implemented a nationwide year-of-birth (YOB) age grouping policy that aligned youth soccer teams with calendar years (January 1st –December 31st), replacing the traditional schoolyear (August 1st –July 31st) grouping system. This dissertation investigates the impact of that policy on youth soccer participation in the United States, addressing a critical gap in empirical research linking national policy interventions to participation outcomes. Framed through the Fun Integration Theory (FIT) (Visek et al., 2015), which conceptualizes youth sport engagement as driven by social and intrinsic enjoyment factors, the study examines whether the YOB policy caused …
Exploring Menstrual Cycle Experiences And Well-Being In Young Women With Type 1 Diabetes, Yolanda Rotzinger Ballesteros
Exploring Menstrual Cycle Experiences And Well-Being In Young Women With Type 1 Diabetes, Yolanda Rotzinger Ballesteros
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Young women with type 1 diabetes (T1D) navigate complex physical, emotional, and social challenges, being at a higher risk for mental health concerns (e.g., depression), as well as physical (e.g., fatigue) and cognitive (e.g., focus) symptoms related to the management of their chronic health condition (Dantzer et al., 2003; Northam et al., 2005). About one-third of young women with T1D experience some form of menstrual dysfunction (Griffin et al., 1994; Schweiger et al., 2011), which is associated with lower quality of life across several domains, including the educational setting (Knox et al., 2015). Nevertheless, there is a gap in the …
