The Impact Of Local-Control Accountability Plan Implementation On Long Term English Learners, John P. Sanchez Sr.
The Impact Of Local-Control Accountability Plan Implementation On Long Term English Learners, John P. Sanchez Sr.
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This qualitative multi-case study was conducted in California, using a selected sample of 20 local education agencies (LEA). This sample was utilized to analyze the effectiveness of how K-12 school districts are meeting the needs of long-term English learners (LTEL) while implementing the local-control accountability plan. The sample of local education agencies was comprised of school districts with student enrollments ranging from 1,500 to 30,000, located in urban, suburban, and rural communities. The results of the study revealed that 13 of 20 LEAs (65%) implemented interventions above and beyond the state required English language development standards. The study also reviewed …
Understanding The Public Education Gender Gap Amid Secondary And Central Office Administrators, Danielle L. Taylor
Understanding The Public Education Gender Gap Amid Secondary And Central Office Administrators, Danielle L. Taylor
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Despite advances in political movements and societal awareness, there is still an obvious gender discrepancy among U.S. public education secondary school and superintendent positions plaguing our nation. Data indicates that most middle and high school classroom teaching positions are filled by women and yet more campuses and districts are led by men. The literature review uncovered two main categories that lead to this gap: external and internal factors. Societal bias, stereotypes, and hiring practices are among the external causations of this margin. Likewise, work life balance and self-desire to combat old organizational structure impact women internally from assuming advanced leadership …
Factors Influencing Teacher Efficacy In A Pennsylvania Juvenile Detention Center Education Program, Rachel M. Weaver
Factors Influencing Teacher Efficacy In A Pennsylvania Juvenile Detention Center Education Program, Rachel M. Weaver
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This dissertation describes the factors influencing teacher efficacy among teachers currently or recently working in a juvenile detention center education program in southeastern Pennsylvania. The single-case study examined the barriers and facilitators to high teacher efficacy in that school setting, since these factors were previously unknown. The research population for the study consisted of all teachers who are working or who have worked within the past five years at the juvenile detention center education program (n=9). Research was conducted using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran & Hoy, 2001), a questionnaire, and in-person interviews. The following were found to …

Teacher Perceptions Of An Evaluation Process: A Qualitative Case Study, Lisa M. Puckett
Teacher Perceptions Of An Evaluation Process: A Qualitative Case Study, Lisa M. Puckett
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of the evaluation system currently used in their district. This study was guided by the following research question: How do teachers perceive the teacher evaluation process in a Midwestern Teacher and student Advancement Program (TAP) school? The theoretical foundations used in this study were Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory and Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluating training programs. The researcher learned that Midwestern teachers in a TAP school perceived the evaluation system to have impacted their teaching in a positive manner and, at the same time, contributed to their stress level. …
Teacher Self-Efficacy In Classroom Management Amongst Novice Middle School Teachers, Kentyl C. Byrne
Teacher Self-Efficacy In Classroom Management Amongst Novice Middle School Teachers, Kentyl C. Byrne
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
There is a lack of research pertaining to classroom management solely related to self-efficacy. This dissertation seeks to contribute to the field of literature and understand what support, if any is being offered to pre-service teachers and novice teachers in the area of classroom management. Rooted in Bandura’s (1997) Social Cognitive Theory, this dissertation examines how novice middle school teachers demonstrate teacher self-efficacy in classroom management, and how the teachers achieved their level of teacher self-efficacy in classroom management. Using a blind survey and face-to-face interview, participants demonstrated self-efficacy in classroom management by focusing on routine and procedures within their …
Encountering The American School System Through The Eyes Of First- And Second- Generation Vietnamese Immigrant Parents, Khanh P. Le
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
As the immigrant population increases in the United States, it is important for American administrators and teachers to form effective partnerships with immigrant parents. With these partnerships, schools can encourage greater direct parental involvement from immigrant parents. Active parental involvement positively correlates with academic success; however, active parental involvement is not seen as much in Asian parents compared to other ethnic groups. Current literature shows lack of direct parental involvement in Asian parents due to barriers such as cultural differences, language, education level of parents, absence of knowledge about American schools, and school-based barriers; however, little is known about Vietnamese …

A Phenomenological Study Of Six Helping Professionals And Their Experiences With A Persistent Adolescent Suicide Cluster, Bobbi-Jo Woodford
A Phenomenological Study Of Six Helping Professionals And Their Experiences With A Persistent Adolescent Suicide Cluster, Bobbi-Jo Woodford
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of six helping professionals, or gatekeepers, who serve the same community and in their professional roles have been professionally exposed to an adolescent suicide cluster. The purpose was to explore a fresh perspective, to uncover similarities between the participants’ experiences, and to better understand the effects that teen suicide has on helping professionals. The three-part interview design did achieve data saturation, and the multi-phase analysis stimulated the emergence of five distinct themes: adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as a root cause, a description of the at-risk teen population, short-term crisis response, long-term stabilization, …

The Impact Of Secondary School Educators’ Implementation Of Response To Intervention (Rti) On African American Female Students, Janelle Muhammad
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Understanding the implementation of the educational policy of the Response to Intervention (RTI) and the extent to which it provides support to students with learning gaps is imperative for student’s success. However, teachers with the broad adoption of the RTI system nationwide may need the additional insight of the intervention delivery challenges, and analysis of direction and intensity. Guided by Dewey’s theory of experiential learning, which holds that educators could utilize a student’s personal experience to engage the learner, this study examined the connection of the student’s experiences facilitated by the teachers’ adoption and construction of edifying experiences to facilitate …

Examining The Relationship Between Gifted Behavior Rating Scores And Student Academic Performance, Lori M. Cleveland
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Current trends in gifted education research suggest the importance of identifying, developing, and nurturing the talent and potential of gifted learners in addition to recognizing high ability through intelligence testing. However, despite decades of work to decrease the achievement gaps, increasing excellence gaps, the disparity between the highest levels of student achievement from White, affluent backgrounds and the top-performing students from minority or low income backgrounds, remains a problem (Plucker & Callahan, 2014). This quantitative research study examines how a component of the identification process, the gifted behavior rating scale, can be used to assess student potential and increase representation …

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Teacher attrition and movement are difficulties facing school systems today. A variety of concerns contribute to teacher attrition and movement including dissatisfaction, school staffing actions, classroom factors, lack of administrative support, lack of resources, and student performance factors. As a result, educators are prone to burnout due to the stresses of teaching, which in turn leads to attrition and movement. School principals can stem the tide of teacher dissatisfaction and attrition by providing technical and adaptive scaffolds for teachers. Leaders can begin to provide these supports by examining their own beliefs and actions around mindset, grittiness, and resistance to change. …
