With the increasing pressure of the American way of life, increased tension and anxieties of our fast civilization, and increased pressure of the advertisements of the liquor industry on billboards, magazines, radio, and newspapers, the alcohol problem has been steadily increasing. It is estimated that two-thirds of the alcoholics begin their drinking while in high school. It would appear then that the high school is the proper place in which to prepare the future citizens to solve their problems in an intelligent and unbiased manner.

Part of the importance of the problem can be seen through the value of speech contests. One of the various means of realizing the purposes of speech education is through the speech contest, the practice of getting together with others for the comparison of formal speaking activities. The value of the speech contest was recognized centuries ago by the Greeks. “Speech contests are old devices; that stimulate a student to his greatest endeavors by a desire to win approval or victory over his fellows in not a product of this mad, modern naturalistic age.” From that early beginning contests have …

All the findings and knowledge of electricity and magnetism are not new; even the Greeks as far back as 600 B. C. knew something about these forces. As time went on the facts increased.
After the experiments of Faraday, Maxwell, Hertz and such men as these, electricity and magnetism became a vital part of human life and endeavor. Within the last twenty-five years the advances in electricity have been very rapid. The action of the electric current is a vital part of many developments and is helping to make human life more enjoyable and interesting.
