Ben Barr enters his third season behind the bench in the 2023-24 season.

Barr arrived at UMaine with 15 years of assistant coaching experience in Division-I programs and a tradition of success at each of his stints at five different institutions. Prior to Maine, Barr spent five years at UMass as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, where he helped guide the Minutemen to a 94-75-10 record, including a 72-26-6 mark over his last three seasons. Amy Vachon, currently in her sixth full season at the helm of the Black Bears and her 12th year on staff, signed a new agreement to serve as Maine’s head coach on March 24, 2021. The new agreement will run from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2025.

Vachon, who spent the final 18 games of the 2016-17 season at the helm of the Black Bears’ staff, was officially named the interim head coach for the 2017-18 season on April 5 of 2017.

Last year marked the first time that a team was ever inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame, with that same 1992-93 National Championship squad leading the way once again. The team - arguably the greatest team in the history of college hockey - went 42-1-2 en route to the national title.

The Black Bear women's swimming & diving team are set to improve on their 3-6 record and 7th place America East finish from a year ago. The team will look for success from a mixture of vetern Black Bears and the strong underclassmen. The men's team looks to continure turning the comer towards success as they open the 2009-10 season. Last year saw the men's team finish 5th in the America East Championships with a record of 3-2, the first time they have been above .500 since the 1999-00 season.

Maine returns four starters and six letterwinners from last season, which saw a young Black Bear squad gain valuable experience. The six returnees include senior forward Colleen Kilmurray (30/30 gp/s), junior guard Amanda Tewksbury (29/26 gp/s), junior forward Brittany Boser (30/26 gp/s), junior guard Kristin Baker (29/13 gp/s), junior forward Katia Bratishko (17/0 gp/s), and sophomore guard Tanna Ross (26/7 gp/s). Sprinkled into the mix are four newcomers including guards Brittany Williams, Jasmine Rush, forward Samantha Wheeler and center Samantha Baranowski.

The 2007-08 women's team finished 4-5, fifth in the America East Championships and 11th in the ECAC Championships. With a strong core of hungry veteran swimmers, the team has a bright outlook for the 2008-09 campaign. The men's team showed imense potential in 2007-08, finishing 1-6 and fifth in the America East Championships and 24th in the ECAC Championships. The team looks to continue the progress they've made using their large freshman class to fuel their 2008-09 campaign.

The University of Maine volleyball team will have the luxury of returning seven seniors to its 2008 squad. The seven seniors have combined to play in 1,413 sets in their careers. The 2007-08 men's ice hockey season was not a typical one for the University of Maine. Maine's string of nine consecutive NCAA appearances, second only to Michigan, was finally snapped. Gone were Josh Soares, Michel Leveille and Mike Lundin, players who had a hand in leading Maine to the NCAA Frozen Four in three of the past four seasons. In addition, the Los Angeles Kings (NHL) signed 2007 Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Teddy Purcell after just one season at Maine, leaving the Black Bears without seven of their top 10 scorers from 2006-07.

Dan Lichterman begins his first season as head coach at Maine after serving as an assistant coach at Minnesota State-Mankato for the past four seasons. At Minnesota State, Lichterman worked primarily with the team's defensemen and designed the defensive systems and penalty kill. He also coordinated all team travel and was responsible for video analysis. In the competitive WCHA, which produced the last seven NCAA Champions, the Mavericks were fifth in the conference with a record of 16-18-2 in 2006-07.

In 2006-07, the Black Bears completed the season with a 23-15-2 overall record and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season.

The season began with Maine taking a 3-1 win over Minnesota in the Hockey Hall of Fame Game in St. Paul. Following a weekend sweep at North Dakota to improve to 5-0, the Black Bears were ranked first in the nation. They stayed their for three weeks, going unbeaten in the first nine games of the season.
