More than 160 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide an clear and understandable, international foundation fr the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resources Development. This research study focused on the question: What common elements will need to be considered to help higher education institutions in various countries shift toward a lifelong learning focus? Research is presented on the background and experiences of various institutions in this regard, developing a policy statement on elements of this re-orientation as a product of a worldwide conference, and ultimately constructing "measurable performance indicators" (MPI) for the seven elements - overarching frameworks, strategic partnerships and linkages, research, teaching and learning processes, administration policies and mechanisms, decision support systems, and student support systems and services. This study searched the literature providing an international research foundation for andragogy. Six themes have emerged: The evolution of the term; historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understandings; popularizing of the American concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition. Implications are provided for the practice of andragogy within the fields of adult, continuing, community, extension, and human resource development education.

Using a qualitative approach, this research provided thematic analysis and description of the context of Knowles' times. This study set out to rewrite history to complement Knowles' autobiography, The Making of an Adult Educator. The research questions included: What took place when Knowles and Savicevic met in 1966? The Voice Of Reason: A Qualitative Examination Of Black Student Perceptions Of Their Black Culture Center, Lori Patton Davis

Black Culture Centers (BCCs) represent safe and welcoming spaces for Black students at predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Resulting from the Black Student Movement of the 1960s, BCCs have become institutional mainstays that provide services and programs to the entire campus community. This study examined Black students' perceptions of the Institute of Black Culture at the University of Florida. The discussion and implications provide an in-depth understanding of the historical, current and future role, and mission of BCCs, as well as insights on the importance of BCCs as PWIs strive to better serve the needs of Black students.

Too often higher education officials equate successful enrollment management with determining the appropriate financial-aid package, assuming the student matriculates. However, there are competing theories as to why a student may be attracted to a particular college. Could it be the "buzz"? This study examines the relationship between buzz and bucks with respect to enrollment objectives. Research findings indicate that it is not an either-or proposition. Moreover, marketers are presented with an ethical responsibility to safeguard the public.

In an increasing multicultural classroom a Confucian-Socratic framework is used to highlight fundamental differences in learning approaches between Eastern and Western cultures. However, educators must also be aware of inherent similarities if best practices are to be gleaned and implemented with ingenuity in the classroom. Peer Support For African American Male College Achievement: Beyond Internalized Racism And The Burden Of “Acting White”, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Theorists posit that the social reinforcement of racially oppressive assumptions eventually works its way into the psyche of African Americans and negatively shapes the way they see themselves and others within their race. Some scholars have attempted to prove and others have subsequently disputed the idea that school achievement within African American peer groups is seen as “acting White.” In this study, internalized racism and Fordham and Ogbu’s (1986) Acting White Hypothesis were explored among high-achieving African American male undergraduates at six predominantly White universities. Findings from individual interviews contradict the hypothesis and reveal ways through which peer support for …

The University of Texas at El Paso’s field-based program of studies for future teachers provides opportunities for powerful learning through a dialectical union of reflection and action. Methods courses in academic disciplines are linked with seminars and coursework on community partnerships, critical pedagogy and culturally responsive education. This article illustrates the processes of planning, implementation and evaluation of this approach, highlighting the impacts of community service learning. Parents, students and future teachers interact in workshops that center on validating native language literacy, increasing parental involvement and providing conceptually correct science education. The five-phased process for building Web sites in the classroom may be useful in helping educators facilitate the process of integrating computer technology and the Internet into instruction and curriculum design. The method described is a synthesis of a personal process of discovery, teaching, and learning that has come from practical experience with teachers and students. To effectively utilize this five-phased approach, the instructor must ascertain the final goal, whether it is a curriculum product, Web site, oral presentation, or some other form of demonstration of learning. In 2004, the State of Texas authorized the Texas Master Science Teacher certification. This post-baccalaureate certification provided a much-needed opportunity for experienced science teachers to be formally recognized for their leadership roles at a time in which science instruction was being impacted by a number of sometimes competing state and national initiatives. This article describes the steps and lessons learned by the team that implemented the first Master Science Teacher program in Texas.
