Who Signed Me Up For This?, John Herner
Who Signed Me Up For This?, John Herner
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
We've all heard the story of the little boy's first day in first grade. When the big hand and the little hand were both pointing straight up, he put on his jacket and began gathering up his things to go home. The teacher explained to Tommy that he was big boy now, and that he didn't go home at lunch like he did when he was in kindergarten; first graders stay at school all day.
"Who signed me up for this?" Tony demanded.
I'm glad someone signed me up to be a part of this first edition the Electronic Journal …

Review: The Teacher's Guide To Behavioral Intervention: Intervention Strategies For Behavior Problems In The Education Environment, Janice Brickley
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
The first two sections of this book are extremely brief. Chapter I is a page and one third of introduction. Mrs. Wunderlich gives a brief background of the techniques she used to identify behaviors targeted in this book and some rationale for developing the manual. Chapter II is directions for using the manual, if the Behaviors Disorder Identification Scale has been administered. The bulk of the manual is contained in Chapters III and IV.

The Basic Course And The Future Of The Workplace, Andrew D. Wolvin
Basic Communication Course Annual
The preparation of students to function as effective communicators in the workplace is an important goal of the basic communication course. To meet this goal, students must be equipped with speaking and listening competencies in order to do their work. The basic hybrid course with units in intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, and public communication offers a viable framework for workplace communication.

The Development Of An Interactive Video Masters Program In Communication Education, Ronnie Bankston, Mary Bozik
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article offers a model for other institutions that may be considering the development of an interactive video Masters Degree program, to share the process by which this program was designed and approved, and examines the issues and challenges confronted. This article is an attempt to help communication administrators benefit from our experience and gain insight into the considerations involved in the development of an M.A. offered via distance learning. The course offerings are based on a view that secondary and community college teachers are required to be generalists since they most often teach a wide variety of topics in …
The Praxis Of Narrative Assessment: Communication Competence In An Information Age, Pat Arneson, Ronald C. Arnett
The Praxis Of Narrative Assessment: Communication Competence In An Information Age, Pat Arneson, Ronald C. Arnett
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article suggests addressing communication competence from a perspective outside the behavioral orientation to communication. Dialogue presupposes both the general public and the academy meeting one another in serious conversation about educational assessment. Ignoring assessment will not make persistent calls for accountability disappear. The routine use of negation of authority leads the way for a powerful enemy to take the public stage from the spectators who by that time have confused the critical life of a spectator with active participation in the culture for too long. Assessment is an inescapable part of the evaluation process. How to determine when communication …

Careers In Communication: An Update, Andrew D. Wolvin
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The article presents an update on career in speech communication. Research supports that communication skills are critically important for entry-level jobs and for career success. Graduates were asked to identify their first job and their present job in an effort to determine how people are able to use a Speech Communication degree to advance in their careers. The positions reported by our graduates are found throughout the workplace: educational institutions; businesses; trade associations; law firms; public relations firms; health organizations; media; religious institutions; government; entertainment; and financial institutions. Respondents were asked to identify what communication issues are the most pressing …

Perspectives On Norm-Referenced And Criterion-Referenced Grading In Introductory Speech Performance Courses, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer
Perspectives On Norm-Referenced And Criterion-Referenced Grading In Introductory Speech Performance Courses, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article explores the integration and amalgamation of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced perspectives in a manner that is particularly appropriate for use in basic or introductory speech communication performance courses. Possibly the greatest virtue of using criterion-referenced grading of speeches in a basic speech performance course is the generation of positive affect toward performance. Because students identify with their speeches, they are much more demoralized by negative feedback about their work on these assignments than for others. By setting appropriate minimal performance criteria that most beginning students can achieve, morale remains high, there is an atmosphere of success, and, in fact, …

Commentary: The Research Foundation For Instruction In The Beginning Public Speaking Course, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, Barbara S. Moyer
Commentary: The Research Foundation For Instruction In The Beginning Public Speaking Course, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, Barbara S. Moyer
Basic Communication Course Annual
The history of public speaking instruction is rooted in classical rhetorical theories. There is a lack of recent communication research findings cited in textbooks to support instruction in the beginning public speaking course. This research examined five leading public speaking texts in the hopes of finding contemporary communication research findings to support the advice given to students. This survey reveals little research being cited in beginning public speaking texts. The authors conclude with a discussion of reasons why research is not cited and offer communication scholars a challenge to conduct research to support pedagogical claims.

Distribution And Ecology Of The Morels And False Morels Of Iowa, L. H. Tiffany, G. Knaphus, D. M. Huffman
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The distribution, time of fruiting and habitats of morels and false morels in Iowa were documented during a 10 year survey (1984-1993). Distribution maps for each species also include information from published reports and from herbarium records. The true morel genus, Morchella, is represented in Iowa by five species. Three of these species, M. deliciosa, M. esculenta and M. crassipes, are sometimes interpreted as segments of one large, extremely variable species. M. semilibera and M. angusticeps also occur. M. angusticeps, a black morel, has not been previously reported from Iowa. Four false morels, two species in each of two genera, …

A Literature Review And Survey Of The Status Of Iowa's Terrestrial Flora, Deborah Q. Lewis
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A survey of Iowa's floristic literature and herbarium resources indicates that while there is not uniform coverage of plant groups and regions, a great deal is known about the Iowa flora. Taxonomic and floristic studies are ongoing, despite evidence of a decreased number of researchers with expertise and interest in Iowa's flora and changing emphases in academic research. Current knowledge is sufficient for the production of an Iowa Flora, and an Iowa Flora committee to initiate this project is proposed.

Iowa's Wetlands, Present And Future With A Focus On Prairie Potholes, R. A. Bishop, J. Joens, J. Zohrer
Iowa's Wetlands, Present And Future With A Focus On Prairie Potholes, R. A. Bishop, J. Joens, J. Zohrer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The vast prairie marsh-pothole complex that historically covered approximately 7 .6 millions acres in Iowa was reduced to less than 30,000 acres by 1980 when it was estimated that only 5,000 acres of prairie marsh and pothole habitat remained in private ownership. A bleak outlook for the future of wetlands was presented by Bishop (1981)." This outlook changed with the development of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and the passage of two important pieces of legislation: the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the Food Security Act of 1985. Protection of existing wetlands was afforded through the Swampbuster provision …
