The Incidence Of Child Abuse And Neglect In The Population At The Utah State Industrial School, Jeff Clark
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There has been some speculation that abuse/neglect may lead to later antisocial behavior by the abused/neglected child. It was the purpose of this project to determine the frequency of abuse/neglect in the population at the State Industrial School and to compare the types of crimes committed by abused/neglected delinquents with those delinquents not abused/neglected.
The subjects consisted of all the adolescents committed to the State Industrial School. During the research project, 159 adolescents were at the State Industrial School. Of those, 63 had data in their files indicating some form of abuse or neglect.
The findings of the study showed …

Moving Toward Effective Teacher Education-One Man's Perspective, Walter R. Borg
Moving Toward Effective Teacher Education-One Man's Perspective, Walter R. Borg
Faculty Honor Lectures
It was nine years ago that I decided to leave Utah State University and join one of the newly formed regional educational laboratories. At that time I had 18 years of educational research behind me, and although I had carried out a number of studies and published about 40 articles in the professional research journals, it was obvious to me that none of my research had had any measurable effect upon education. At best, my work might have influenced the decisions of a few school administrators, but this is an optimistic view since most school administrators prefer not to be …
Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell
Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this complex and often confusing country, reading is viewed by many people as the most important skill a child can acquire during his school years. Success in school, of both children and teachers, particularly in the elementary grades, is often measured by children's success in learning how to read. Reading is the tool that unlocks most knowledge for children and adults alike. As a person seeks employment the inability to read or the inability to read with facility greatly limits the opportunities.

An Analysis Of The Program For Education Professions Development Act, Part E, Fellowship Students At Utah State University, Ronald Max Rees
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
From the time of the first school through the current schools of today, one of the greatest concerns of educators has been the development of curriculums. "Among the most important educational policies of schools are those pertaining to curriculum." (Kirst and Decker, 1972, p. 28) This concern has been echoed by many educators across the country including those at Utah State University. At Utah State the responsibility of the curriculum for the Education Professions Development Act, Part E, program (EPDA) belongs to the Business Education Department. The fiveyear old EPDA, Part E, program at Utah State University has been deeigned …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Along with other curricular changes in the postsecondary schools of today has come an added emphasis upon business and business subjects. Elaborating on this specific statement concerning business subjects, Veon notes that it is the responsibility of the school and of the instructors to provide the student with the high quality vocational education that will enable that student to have a successful life by securing a good initial job and adapting himself to that vocation.1
Accordingly, in the past few years Weber State College has developed one-year and two-year programs in Secretarial Science designed to meet the specific vocational …

An Administrative Plan For Extension Library Service In Utah, Dana Andrew Samples
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A free society that is information oriented and technologically complex requires a well informed, highly educate citizenry. The constant growth of knowledge further means that this educative process be a continuous, life-long endeavor. No longer can education be thought of as an entry point; instead, it must represent a constant evolutionary process throughout life.
A few universities long ago recognized the off campus extension of higher education as a legitimate public service responsibility. New York in 1891 and Wisconsin in 1906 made provision for extending the scope of the university to embrace a full range of adult educational needs and …

The Development Of A Proposed Model Office Stimulation For Implementation At The College Of Eastern Utah, Faye Ladawn Torgerson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A review of recent articles indicates that the effectiveness of simulation on Vocational Education has been substantiated. Many programs have been used throughout the United States which point out the success of office simulation.
Utah began simulation by converting trailers into mobile modern offices. The first class was taught in June, 1968, with a migrant farm worker project. The program was called MOE (Mobile Office Education). Hanson and Stocker were involved in the development and teaching of this program. They explain their ideas about a successful and effective simulation program:
It is a real organization of students formed under the …

The Career Image Of Women In Selected Retailing Firms In Cache County, Utah, Mary L. Waits
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
"In essence, careers for women should not be any different from careers for men. Decisions with respect to gainful and satisfying employment for women should be made on the basis of occupational outlook and the demand for workers in the growth occupations as well as on individual interests and capabilities." (Careers For Women In The 70s , page 11).
In recent years, a great deal has been written and spoken about equal rights for women, with equal employment opportunities being in the forefront. The Women's Liberation Movement has in some way touched the lives of each individual within our society …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As society changes, current educational systems need to be evaluated and upgraded. Methods and procedures of teaching become outdated with constant technological advances. Predictions of the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate, " ... more than 350,000 new clerical and related jobs will be added each year during the next decade."1 These projected workers will have to obtain training for their future careers. The business teacher has a responsibility to provide necessary training for students pursuing business careers.
How can these teachers prepare themselves to meet the needs of their students? An effective way for teachers to keep abreast of changes …

In 1906 cooperative education was established by Dean Herman Schneider of the University of Cincinnati. Since that time legislation has been passed, such as the Vocational Act of 1963 and the Amendments of 1968, which have played an important part in the adoption of cooperative office education programs in the schools. Prior to 1963 there were approximately 450 programs, and in 1969-70 there were approximately 2,321 programs operating.
Douglas, Blanford, and Anderson, in their book Teaching Business Subjects state that "Cooperative education is a method of education that integrates learning experiences in the school with work experiences made available in …

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
During my years in the public school system, I have felt that a basic deterrent to the child's personal and emotional growth has been the inability of educators to effectively communicate with children in the classroom. Gordon (1970, p. 298) states that teachers and other adults "lack the basic attitudes and skills to be effective training agents in an interpersonal relationship with a child or adolescent." Flanders (1971) feels that teachers, while behaviorally influencing children and determining the learning situation, actually have little knowledge about those methods of influence.
I am concerned with the need to train teachers to work …

Special Education And Pupil Personnel Services Offered By The Utah State Board Of Education, Mark J. Bankhead
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In the United States responsibility for education is a function of the state, local school districts derive their authority from the state legislature (Graham, 1962). For many years, especially during the 19th century, the only legislative provision for the education of handicapped children was the limited support of state institutions and residential schools. Recent federal court decisions have substantiated the right of handicapped children to equal protection under the law, including an education, and made state departments of education "solely responsible for providing handicapped children with a free and public education appropriate to their individual capacities." (Abeson, 1972, p. 11) …
