Effects Of Heated Water-Based Versus Land-Based Exercise Training On Vascular Function In Individuals With Peripheral Artery Disease, Song-Young Park, Alexei Wong, Won-Mok Son, Elizabeth J. Pekas

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that is associated with poor vascular function, walking impairment, and reduced quality of life. Land-based exercise therapy (LBET) is frequently recommended to improve walking and reduce symptoms. Recently, evidence has suggested that heated-water exercise therapy (HWET) is an effective intervention for PAD. However, the efficacy of LBET versus HWET in PAD patients had not been elucidated. Therefore, we sought to compare effects of LBET with HWET on cardiovascular function, exercise tolerance, physical function, and body composition in PAD patients. PAD patients (n = 53) were recruited and randomly assigned to a …

Mmp9 Mediates Acute Hyperglycemia-Induced Human Cardiac Stem Cell Death By Upregulating Apoptosis And Pyroptosis In Vitro, Santosh K. Yadav, Tyler N. Kambis, Sumit Kar, Song-Young Park, Paras K. Mishra

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Providing a conducive microenvironment is critical to increase survival of transplanted stem cells in regenerative therapy. Hyperglycemia promotes stem cell death impairing cardiac regeneration in the diabetic heart. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of high glucose-induced stem cell death is important for improving cardiac regeneration in diabetic patients. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), a collagenase, is upregulated in the diabetic heart, and ablation of MMP9 decreases infarct size in the non-diabetic myocardial infarction heart. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether MMP9 is a mediator of hyperglycemia-induced cell death in human cardiac stem cells (hCSCs) in vitro. We created MMP9−/− hCSCs …

Implementation Of A New Assessment System: A Look At Year Two Of A Three Year Professional Development Plan, Janet A. Zahm

Student Work

Increased accountability requirements have created a focus on assessments. As schools and districts work to meet federal and state requirements by demonstrating student progress as indicated by high stakes testing, assessment data literacy has become a necessary skill for educators to possess. Districts and schools need to ensure assessment literacy training has occurred that relates to the current tests being utilized. When assessments change, there is a need to understand the new assessment system, including the administration of the test. However, there is a greater need to use assessment data to modify instruction to meet all students’ needs. Knowledge of …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Associations With Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents, Hye Yeon Lee, Isak Kim, Jeongwoon Jeong

Counseling Faculty Publications

Objectives

There has been increasing attention to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among adolescents in the U.S because ACEs may result in severe mental health issues. Advocating For Adolescent Substance Use Recovery: An Alternative Model, Christine Chasek, Judith Nelson, Rochelle Cade, Kristen Page, Bryan Stare, George Stoupas

Counseling Faculty Publications

Adolescents at risk for substance use disorders face unique challenges in recovery when compared with adults. Counselors may seek to address developmental considerations with such clients, but often lack diagnostic and community resources necessary to provide holistic care. The Alternative Peer Group model shows promise in addressing adolescent recovery, however, more research is needed. We conclude from the limited research that has been conducted on APGs that there are positive aspects to consider in implementing this model including a positive peer group that offers support in recovery, 12-step meetings that are adapted specifically for adolescents, parent education and support, and …

Habitus And Imagined Ideals: Attending To (Un)Consciousness In Discourses Of (Non)Nativeness, Madina Djuraeva, Lydia Catedral

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This study responds to scholarship that has examined “folk concepts” of (non)nativeness through the lens of imagined ideals of the native speaker, by proposing a framework that integrates both ideals and habits. We operationalize these concepts by drawing from the theoretical notions of chronotope, scale, and habitus. Using data from interviews with Central Asian transnational migrants, we demonstrate how attending to both the habitual and idealized aspects of speakers’ metalinguistic commentary offers a more holistic approach to the study of multilingual repertoires and speakers’ social positionings in relationship to (non)nativeness. Our findings demonstrate how identification as a “(non)native” speaker may …

The Legacy Of William Frantz Public School: Commemoration Vs. Celebration, Connie L. Schaffer, Martha Graham Viator, Meg White Jan 2020

The Legacy Of William Frantz Public School: Commemoration Vs. Celebration, Connie L. Schaffer, Martha Graham Viator, Meg White

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Sixty years ago, Ruby Bridges, a Black first-grade student, entered the all-White William Frantz Public School (WFPS). Her entry into WFPS represented a massive transformation in public education in the United States and embedded the school in the U.S. civil rights movement. Fifteen years ago, following Hurricane Katrina, the rapid increase in charter schools in New Orleans centered WFPS in a second transformation, the movement to reform public education. In addition to these two seminal events, a more complete history of WFPS provides justification that these landmark transformations be commemorated rather than celebrated.

Improving The Sentence Writing Fluency Of A Student With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Speech/Language Impairment: A Pilot Study, Shawn M. Datchuk, Apryl L. Poch, K. L. Panos

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The skill of sentence writing – the composition of connected text into sentence types understandable to readers – is foundational to written expression. Unfortunately, many students with learning disabilities – particularly those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and speech and/or language impairment (S/LI) – struggle to develop sentence writing and its multiple, related skills. Using a single-baseline design, we studied effects of a supplemental writing intervention on one elementary-aged student with comorbid ADHD and S/LI. The intervention entailed delivery of a writing fluency intervention with several antecedent- and consequence-based components: explicit instruction, fluency practice, a reinforcer survey, and contingent …
