Libraries Professional Work

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries are home to a Chandler & Price printing press, originally built in 1885. Unfortunately, this press was not whole or fully operational when it was acquired by the UAB Libraries in the 1970s. Among its defects, the press lacked the treadle, Pittman arm, and crankshaft to power the press, a functioning rotating ink plate, a chase for holding the type in place, and the pin that keeps the large wheel turning in time with the gears that lead the machine to function. Members from the UAB Libraries Historical Collections and Reference and …

Behind The Screen: Exploring How Undergraduate Students Experience Sense Of Belonging In Online Learning Environments In The United States, Grace Ellen Kiersznowski Jun 2026

Behind The Screen: Exploring How Undergraduate Students Experience Sense Of Belonging In Online Learning Environments In The United States, Grace Ellen Kiersznowski

ETDs from 2020-2029

Enrollment in online courses in higher education has been rising rapidly over the past couple of decades and has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic. This has made higher learning more accessible for students who would otherwise have difficulty earning a degree. Online education poses many barriers to students’ development of a sense of belonging, something research has been found to be of great importance to student success and well-being. Relatively little was known about students’ sense of belonging in online learning environments prior to the pandemic. Since the pandemic, online education has undergone major changes, changing the landscape in a …

Why Gentlemen Prefer Chi Omega: The Impact Of The Sorority Tier System On The Member Experience, Cameron Pannell Jun 2026

Why Gentlemen Prefer Chi Omega: The Impact Of The Sorority Tier System On The Member Experience, Cameron Pannell

ETDs from 2020-2029

Sorority life is situated in a social hierarchy, in which the hierarchical tiers are determined by sorority women’s feminine worth. The hierarchical system in sorority life originates from women’s pursuit of hegemonic femininity. This study utilized semi-structured interviews of eight sorority women to fulfill the purpose of this study, which was to investigate how the sorority tier system shapes members’ experiences in Greek life and in college. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study reveal that access to top-tier chapters is limited to elite women; women choose their chapter either for deep connections or for reputation …

Leadership In Parent Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of School Principals’ Preparedness To Lead Parent Engagement, Aqila Malpass Jun 2026

Leadership In Parent Engagement: A Phenomenological Study Of School Principals’ Preparedness To Lead Parent Engagement, Aqila Malpass

ETDs from 2020-2029

Researchers consistently report a strong positive correlation between parent engagement and student achievement. When parents are engaged, students benefit in all grade levels and backgrounds (Auerbach, 2010; Epstein, 2011; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2005; Weiss et al., 2010). Policy-makers and educators acknowledge the influence of parent engagement on student outcomes (Mapp, 2012). Consequently, communities need effective parent engagement systems and structures within their schools. Principals should understand parent engagement and be equipped to lead its implementation in their schools. It is also necessary to identify key training and support conditions that help to equip principals to lead effective parent …

Balancing Act: How Graduate Student Mothers Navigate Dual Roles, Jessica Seymour Jun 2026

Balancing Act: How Graduate Student Mothers Navigate Dual Roles, Jessica Seymour

ETDs from 2020-2029

Graduate student mothers represent a growing but often overlooked population within higher education. While research has examined the experiences of undergraduate student parents, significantly less attention has been given to graduate students who balance academic responsibilities with motherhood. This study explores the experiences of graduate student mothers enrolled at public four-year institutions, focusing on the institutional, financial, and social barriers that shape their academic success and participation in campus life. Using a phenomenological approach, this research seeks to understand how graduate student mothers navigate the dual roles of parenting and pursuing advanced degrees. The study employs a Borderland Theoretical Framework …

Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Perceptions About Literacy Self-Efficacy, Carrie Beth Buchanan Jun 2026

Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Perceptions About Literacy Self-Efficacy, Carrie Beth Buchanan

ETDs from 2020-2029

Historically, research has shown that teacher self-efficacy positively influences student achievement (Gibson & Dembo, 1984; Tschannen-Moran et al., 1998; Muijs & Reynolds, 2001). With the sudden shift to digital instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes in literacy practices and assessment, teachers have been required to implement new instructional strategies. Grounded in Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory, my research explored how mastery experiences and teacher mindsets influence student success in this changing environment. This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to investigate the perceptions of current middle school English Language Arts (MS ELA) teachers about their literacy self-efficacy. Data …
