All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore the most significant experiences in preparation for becoming early childhood/elementary educators, as perceived by teacher candidates and recent graduates of one southeastern university, school of education. This research study, conducted from a constructivist theoretical lens, and using a grounded theory methodology, sought to answer three research questions. First, what are the significant experiences, as perceived by recent graduates, from one southeastern school of education, in preparation for the multifaceted role of today's early childhood/elementary generalist? Exploring Principal Support For Teacher Learning Through Professional Learning Communities In Torchbearer Schools, Joseph P. Dawson

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative multiple case study explored principals support for teacher learning through Professional Learning Communities (PLC)s in Torchbearer Schools in Alabama. In the last two decades the PLC model for school improvement has been implemented in K-12 schools with the primary goal of improving student achievement. There is limited research to show how principals support teacher learning in PLCs. My study helped to provide principals and teachers insight into how principals support teacher learning in PLCs. The study was conducted in three Torchbearer Schools in Alabama. Each school had implemented PLCs for a minimum of one year. The participants included …

Applying Charlotte Mason's Philosophy To Early Childhood Education: A Qualitative Study Of Four Teachers' Experiences, Grace Mooney

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to explore teachers’ experiences in applying Charlotte Mason’s (1842-1923) philosophy to early childhood education. Research regarding Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy is limited and no studies were found to address teachers’ application of her approach across various settings. In an attempt to fill this research gap, this study included four teachers from different settings; each of the teachers used Charlotte Mason’s approach in their classrooms. The research question was: How do teachers describe their experiences in applying Charlotte Mason’s philosophy to early childhood education? The research was conducted using a qualitative case study approach and …

Self-Perceptions And Social Comparison With A Primary Focus On Racial Identity In African American, Hispanic And Caucasian Fifth-Grade Children, Jeffrey G. Moore Jan 2015

Self-Perceptions And Social Comparison With A Primary Focus On Racial Identity In African American, Hispanic And Caucasian Fifth-Grade Children, Jeffrey G. Moore

All ETDs from UAB

Understanding the significance of one’s ethnic group is pivotal to comprehending and defining one’s overall process of self-perception, its influence on academic achievement, and probability for future success as well as personal fulfillment, especially among adolescents (Hill, Mance, Anderson, & Smith, 2012). Consequently, an adolescent’s view of self is often directly associated with personal interactions with individuals closest in nature and proximity. To explore the effects of self-perception among fifth-grade adolescents, a quantitative study was conducted to examine physical appearance and self-worth disparities among pre-adolescent Black, Hispanic, and White youth. For this research, three racial identity developmental theories were applied, …

Tinto’s 1975 integrative model provided a framework for the study. The study was guided by the following question: What does it mean …

Exploring First-Semester Medical Student Academic Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Deborah J. Blackstone Jan 2015

Exploring First-Semester Medical Student Academic Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Deborah J. Blackstone

All ETDs from UAB

Academic self-efficacy has been empirically demonstrated to be related to academic performance over a wide range of grade levels and academic settings, but little research exists examining this relationship in medical school. This study sought to fill this gap by investigating academic self-efficacy in first-semester medical students using a sequential mixed methods approach. In the first, quantitative strand, 81 first-semester medical students completed an academic self-efficacy survey during the first science-based course and again at the end of the semester. Academic self-efficacy for out of class academic tasks decreased over the semester; academic self-efficacy for in class academic tasks was …

To foster faculty gratification and promote long-term retention of skilled instructors to teach online, nursing schools need to learn more about factors …

The Role Of The Teacher In Family Involvement: A Multiple Case Study, Terri Garrison Jan 2015

The Role Of The Teacher In Family Involvement: A Multiple Case Study, Terri Garrison

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the teacher's role in family involvement in preschool classrooms. Family involvement has been a relevant topic for early childhood educators for many years (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1995). When families are involved in their child's school experience, it has added a positive benefit to the child's development (Chavkin, 2005; Swick, 2004; Marcon, 1999). Regardless of this widely held belief, many families face barriers that prevent involvement from occurring (Gallimore & Goldenberg, 2001; Lamb-Parker, Piotrkowski, Baker, Kessler-Sklar, Clark, & Peay, 2001). This multiple case study was designed to answer the following …
