This research study sought to determine if students with disabilities benefit from pre-reading strategies in reading comprehension. Reading is a fundamental skill that supports academic achievement. Using pre-reading strategies will motivate and increase student comprehension. In an effort to influence students with disabilities, the concept of pre-reading strategies was introduced to a group of middle school students. Some pre-reading strategies included selecting interesting texts, graphic organizers, vocabulary instruction, visual representations, and the activation of prior knowledge. Findings have shown that pre-reading strategies influence student motivation, increase the activation of prior knowledge and they can be used as a tool for …

Based in recognizing and accepting cultural differences, culturally responsive education is a pedagogy …

Enterprise Risk Management: Framework Presence And Effectiveness, Erika P. Mcbride Aug 2012

Enterprise Risk Management: Framework Presence And Effectiveness, Erika P. Mcbride

Education Doctoral

The field of enterprise risk management (ERM) was born from corporate scandals early in this century. COSO published its Integrated Framework in 2004, outlining eight ERM components that, when present and functioning effectively, provide reasonable assurance an organization will meet its objectives. Since then, organizations have been increasingly urged to adopt risk oversight practices, with research conducted to measure the level of ERM framework adoption. These studies show varying levels of ERM application, with minimal evidence of ERM effectiveness. To consolidate existing studies, a fixed effects meta-analysis of proportions was conducted, revealing a 47.4% level of framework adoption. An experiment …

Education Doctoral

While considerable attention is focused on the role of community colleges in educating the nation’s workforce, concerns pervade regarding the growing number of students whose basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics are insufficient to support success at the college-level. Community colleges contend with limited resources as they endeavor to provide opportunities to underprepared students who aspire to higher education. In order to support student success while containing costs, community colleges must examine the effectiveness of developmental program offerings. Using a quasi-experimental design, this quantitative study explored whether relationships exist between students’ scores on a standardized test in reading and …

A 20-item Student Trust Scale and the spring 2012 New York State English Language Arts scaled scores were collected from a sample population of (N = 375) student participants in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. The purpose of the research was to …

Understanding Police-Citizen Conflict: A Neighborhood Environmental Perspective, Demosthenes Long Aug 2012

Understanding Police-Citizen Conflict: A Neighborhood Environmental Perspective, Demosthenes Long

Education Doctoral

Many sociologists agree that environment influences behavior. What remains not known and difficult to determine is the impact of environmental factors, either singularly or in combination, on behavior. The purpose of the study was to identify factors or conditions present in the city’s neighborhoods and communities associated with allegations of police discourtesy or police use of offensive language during police-citizen encounters. An analysis of 2008 citizen complaint data against police officers in an urban U.S. city was conducted, guided by Turk’s theory of norm resistance and Sykes and Clark’s theory of deference exchange. Frequency analyses, Pearson’s chi-square tests of independence, …

A Study Of Undergraduate Mentoring And The Factors Affecting Students’ Disengagement From Mentoring, Janet B. Lyons

Education Doctoral

The United States is in an educational crisis. Far too many of our students do not attend college, let alone graduate once they attend. While there are many factors that influence whether a student will attend college and subsequently graduate, mentoring has been identified as a worthwhile support that influences retention and graduation rates of undergraduate students. Unfortunately, many students who can avail themselves of free mentoring supports do not take advantage of what is offered. The study investigated the factors that influence student non-participation in an undergraduate mentoring program at a small private college in New York State. A …

How Does The Use Of Phonemic Awareness Skill-Building Software In Conjunction With An In-School Literacy Program Benefit Students' Literacy Skills?, Amanda Radell

Education Masters

This study examined how phonemic awareness skill building software benefited the literacy skills of school age children. Research was conducted through observation of two students, a kindergartener and third grader, using Earobics software. In addition to observation, informal interviews were also used to determine the necessity of the software and its possible benefits. The students demonstrated an increase in literacy skills, but not phonemic awareness skills specifically. The benefits of this software allow for students to develop their literacy skills more fully by providing a strong skill base when used as a supplement to a complete literacy program.

The current economic landscape in the United States invites, almost by default, a study on finances. As stated by Valenti, “Where do school leaders turn when growing taxpayer resistance and tightening economic conditions threaten to reduce local support and government aid?” (Harris, 2009, p.18) According to the New York State Commission on Property Tax Relief, Thomas R. Suozzi’s Final Report to Governor David A. Paterson, affirmed “New York has a problem” (Suozzi, 2008, p.12). According to Suozzi, [New York’s] 78th percentile [highest local tax rate] is “above the national average” (p.20). Further in the Report, Suozzi says, “From every perspective, …

The quantitative component was completed during an experiment involving school psychologists who reviewed student profiles of an African-American male student and a White male student with the same profile. The analysis looked to determine the frequency that the African-American student was classified …
