This mixed-method study investigated the impact of student race in the determination of eligibility of emotional disturbance as recommended by school psychologists. The results of this study looked at the implications that the evaluation component of the referral to the Committee on Special Education (CSE) has on the disproportionate representation of African-American males classified with an emotional disturbance. The quantitative component was completed during an experiment involving school psychologists who reviewed student profiles of an African-American male student and a White male student with the same profile. This research study aimed to determine if interactive read-alouds have a greater impact on student comprehension than non-interactive read-alouds when numerous factors are taken into consideration. It will be determined why interactive read-alouds have a greater impact on student comprehension. This action research project asks if the comprehension of students who have moderate to severe cognitive disabilities benefit more from interactive or traditional teaching methods. It was the claim that interactive teaching instruction is more beneficial to comprehension. Direct and interactive instruction was used with two students to determine which instruction was most beneficial. Through teacher interviews, student work samples, and field notes taken, direct instruction proved to be better for comprehension. Educators of students with significant disabilities should use a combination of direct and interactive instruction to benefit students’ comprehension.

Given that responsible students actively engage in their own literacy learning by developing personal literacy goals and that learning occurs when effective reading strategies are taught, this action research project asks, which after reading strategies work best with fiction and nonfiction texts in developing comprehension in fifth graders? Research for this study takes place at Middlebrook Elementary School. Three fifth grade students participated in several reading and assessment tasks over the course of seven work sessions. This research study determined if four iPad phonics applications had an impact on phonics acquisition in kindergarten students. This study concluded that the phonics iPad applications used in this study proved neither more nor less effective than the phonics iPad applications set in place by the classroom teacher. This study examined how graphic novels can reinforce students’ understanding of literary terms and what students’ perceptions of using graphic novels as a learning tool are. The research was conducted with three reading clinic students who completed pre and post unit questionnaires on the literary terms used studied, filled out a questionnaire about graphic novels, created pre and post unit creative pieces based on the literary terms and were observed for behaviors and attitudes. For this action research project, data was collected in a variety of ways which entailed observations, interviews, surveys, and authentic work completed by participants. This study reveals that the use of Spoken Word Poetry in the classroom impacts the development of voice in writing. As a result, teachers should incorporate Spoken Word Poetry into their writing curriculum. This study aims to examine the effects of teachers of different genders instructing students of different genders. Data was collected through concept maps of classroom physical space, teacher interviews, student attitude surveys and classroom observational notes of sixth and seventh grade students and teachers. The study reveals that male and female teachers privilege students of the opposite sex, female students have more negative attitudes towards reading and physical space plays a role in student engagement and participation among male and female students. Teachers need to be conscious of their decisions and how assumptions and bias expectations can hinder student learning.

This research paper explores the implementation of the iPad into reading instruction, specifically, how do teachers use the iPad to facilitate reading instruction in middle school classrooms? Examining the implementation of the iPad in the classroom will provide insight into possible benefits, including increasing student engagement and reading comprehension. Students from one fifth grade and one sixth grade classroom were observed, interviewed and assessed after using the iPad in their daily reading instruction. This study aimed to compare different pre-reading strategies that improve students’ comprehension. This research determined that teachers who activated students’ prior knowledge before reading enhanced their students’ comprehension. Data was collected through observation of students utilizing three different pre-reading strategies, an interview with a classroom teacher, and a multiple-choice comprehension quiz. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence boys’ negative perception of writing then analyze how that perception affects the quality of their work. The study consisted of nine male participants who were identified by their classroom teachers. Textbooks have been viewed as unbiased and influential sources. This study posed the question: how does the representation of minorities in high school history textbooks impact student perception of those races? Research for the study was conducted in a Western New York State suburban high school within two classrooms: one 11th grade A.P. U.S. history class and one 9th grade AVID social studies class. So many students today in the American School Systems struggle to read. Therefore, the questions arise what are students’ perceptions of their own reading achievement, and what are the motivational factors that affect this achievement. This study took place in a medium sized suburb and in three different classrooms throughout the district. The findings of this study show a student’s beliefs are not connected to his/her reading achievement or DRA levels. However, a student’s attitude and motivational levels are weakly related to their DRA levels.
