A Comparison Of Academic Achievement Between Students Participating In A Study Skills Workshop And Non-Participants In A School Of Nursing., Jennie Ann Stone
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This study investigated the relationship between levels of self-esteem of senior students in a school of nursing and a measure of professional achievement the National Council Licensure Emanation for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The hypothesis tested was that there would be a significant relationship between scores on the Self-Esteem Index (S.E.I.) and final scores achieved by seniors on the NCLEX-RN. Thirty senior students comprised the research population. The independent variable, self-esteem, was quantified into four categories (negative, low, moderate, high), by using the S.E.I., and the dependent variable was operationalized as the score achieved on the NCLEX-RN. The Pearson Correlation statistic …

The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to investigate the variance in perceptions of faculty and students of the adequacy of death content in the curricula of the Wisconsin associate degree nursing programs. No prior research in this area could be found. About fifty-five percent of the 42,000 registered nurses in Wisconsin were prepared for practice by associate degree programs. Five hundred to eight hundred and fifty second-year students receive their basic education and graduate from the fifteen programs offering the associate degree yearly. Prior to this study there was no indication of the quality and quantity of …

A Model System Design For Providing Adult Education Theory And Practice Information To Hospital-Based Educators In Texas, Michael P. West
A Model System Design For Providing Adult Education Theory And Practice Information To Hospital-Based Educators In Texas, Michael P. West
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Texas Health Studies (THS), a non-profit education service organization, serves hospital-based educators as a primary client group. These educators traditionally come from a health services educational experience which emphasizes the provision of patient care rather than education. However, this educator is expected to provide quality education services to a wide variety of groups within the hospital setting. With the increase in accountability throughout the hospital, the hospital-based educator may experience an increase in pressure to demonstrate competency. Since Texas Health Studies is interested in providing both relevant and quality educational services to its client groups, the primary purpose of this …

The Effect Of Academic Preparedness On The Persistence Of Associate Degree Nursing Students, Carol L. Speyerer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In order to determine whether variables exist that influence student persistence to graduation, a study was conducted on the effect of academic preparedness on successful completion of an Associate Degree Nursing program. Academic preparedness was determined by each entering student's assessment scores, completion of specific developmental courses, the number of credit hours earned toward the nursing degree plan, and the grade point average (G.P.A.) reflective of those hours prior to entering the first nursing course. Demographic information Included each student's age, sex, ethnicity, campus site of enrollment, and the semester of initial entry into nursing. The hypothesis was that there …

An Affective Strategy To Teach Self-Monitoring Study Skills To Secondary Severely Emotionally Disturbed (Sed) Students., William T. Roach Jr.
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This author developed and implemented a self-monitoring study strategy with an affective focus. It was designed to address eight target behaviors that interfered with classroom performance. Based on a questionnaire and inventory administered to 34 students and eight teachers the problems identified were directly associated with the process of independent study. The targeted problems were demonstrating impatience, setting goals, allowing distractions to delay, reviewing paper before turning in, rushing through an assignment, expecting assignment to be difficult, requesting assistance appropriately and relying too much on others. The strategy was eventually used with 13 severely emotionally disturbed students at the secondary …

The Impact Of Selected College Credit Telecourses On Student Academic Achievement And Retention Levels., Richard E. Hoehlein
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The use of telecourses as an alternative method of instruction has grown considerably among higher education institutions in the past decade. Yet reservations linger regarding the effectiveness and appropriateness of this technology in academic settings. While the literature has generally shown no negative impacts of telecourses on academic performance, questions remain about the quality of the learning experience and how well this medium serves the needs of the diverse student types being served by colleges today.
As the involvement of Tidewater Community College (TCC) in telecourse instruction has increased over the past few years, so too has the need to …

Improving The Proofreading Skills Of Secondary Students Through The Use Of Motivational Devices, Gay E. Parker
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Proofreading to produce a mailable copy in a typewriting class is a major problem. Often proofreading is not taught but assumed to occur naturally as an intrinsic value to students. (Sustaita, 1983) Literature reveals many techniques on how to proofread, but does not address the problem of how to motivate students enough to continually and meticulously proofread their work.
This practicum proposes to address this problem by first testing to measure the students skill in a secondary typewriting class. Secondly, this practicum proposes to teach and to test the use of proofreaders symbols and the identification of errors as a …

In order to accomplish this, teachers needed exposure to the field of compute education, particularly computer …
