International Teaching Internship: Development Of Pre-Service Teachers’ Competences, Luthfi Auni, Teuku Zulfikar, Saiful Akmal, Alfiatunnur Alfiatunnur, Farah Dina

The Qualitative Report

Teachers’ competences should be shaped from a very early stage of their training (Mâţă, Cmeciu, & Ghiaţău, 2013). For that reason, pre-service teachers are required to get involved in teaching internships and gain professional experience from training programs and workshops. These experiences are assets for these pre-service teachers when they resume teaching positions upon graduation. The present narrative study, therefore, aims to investigate the benefits of international teaching internship, known as South-East Asian Teacher (henceforth SEA-Teacher Program) on Indonesian pre-service English teachers’ identity and competence development. There were four male and four female participants of SEA-Teacher program participated in the …

Imposter Participants: Overcoming Methodological Challenges Related To Balancing Participant Privacy With Data Quality When Using Online Recruitment And Data Collection, Jacqueline M. Roehl Phd, Darci J. Harland Phd

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we describe the lessons learned when untrustworthy participants were included in a qualitative interview study. In online research, participants can more easily misrepresent their identity and volunteer for studies even if they do not meet inclusion criteria. The term “imposter participant” refers to dishonest participants who completely fake their identities or simply exaggerate their experiences in order to participate in qualitative studies. Untrustworthy participants are a threat to data quality, yet little has been published on how qualitative researchers should prevent and handle this unique methodological challenge. In this paper, we provide a detailed account of how …

Transitional Learning: Fostering Successful Learning Strategies In First-Year Graduate Students, Joy Moulton Nov 2022

Transitional Learning: Fostering Successful Learning Strategies In First-Year Graduate Students, Joy Moulton

Teaching & Learning Conference

Transitioning from undergraduate to graduate school requires a shift in learning strategies. Studies show that undergraduate students tend to use strategies successful for short-term learning to pass exams and earn good grades; however, these strategies do not result in the long-term retention required at the graduate level. When students enter graduate programs and continue to use strategies that were successful in their undergraduate studies, they often find themselves failing exams, not retaining information for future units of a course or for future courses of a program, and unfortunately failing courses or failing out of a program entirely. This session will …

Teachers Are Engaging Learners Too, Ronald Chenail Nov 2022

Teachers Are Engaging Learners Too, Ronald Chenail

Teaching & Learning Conference

The simplest way for us as educators to embrace a learner-centered pedagogy is to act as learners along with our students. This identify can be difficult because of years of training and experiences can influence us to separate ourselves as learners from our teaching activities. Serving as “Sages on Stages” and even “Guides of the Sides” can rob us as faculty from the sheer joys and rewards as learners and students from learning along with us as co-learners. In other words, we can help our students learn not by being hierarchical teachers as experts (i.e., being purveyors of privileged knowledge …
