A Comparison Of College Level Academic Skills Test Scores Between Florida International University And Miami-Dade Community College Students, Joel Fleischer

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to compare College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) scores between Florida International University (FIU) and Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) students to see if there were any significant differences. For many years critics of the two-year college have maintained that the quality of education offered these students suffers and that the community/junior college acts as a handicap to those students attending it. All students who took the CLAST at Florida International University (N= 278) and all students who took the CLAST at Miami-Dade Community College (N = 1,076) during the June, 1987 administration had their …

A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community: Development And Use, Janet Garzone Kosidlak

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The traditional concerns of public health have been the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the prevention of premature death. As death from communicable diseases and conditions of pregnancy and early infancy decrease, public health interests are being expanded toward the prevention of premature death from chronic diseases.

Mortality rates were the most common indicators used to describe the burden of chronic disease problems in the community. Mortality rates are based on the number of incidences per 100,000 population. A relatively newer indicator is called Years of Potential Life Lost. Years of Potential Life Lost represent the number …

Improving Teacher Effectiveness In Implementing Comprehensive Health Education, Janet L. Kehoe

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Comprehensive Health Education/Growing Healthy (GH) was not being taught for the required number of hours as was indicated in the pupil progression plan for this community. The objectives of the practicum were to increase the number of trained teachers by 60 percent; thereby increasing the instructional time GH was taught, and to place, and organize all commercial instructional-support materials within the elementary school. The author designed a six-week long training program, conducted an inventory of all GH materials, and color coded all commercial instructional-support materials by phase and grade level.

The researcher received administrative support from the school's administration to …

Publishing companies' consultants plan and implement staff development programs in reading to meet inservice needs of school districts throughout the United States. The changes that are occurring in reading education are impacting the role of the classroom teacher. Inservice programs that were previously successful must now be evaluated to determine if they meet the current needs of teachers.

Studies that assess student achievement indicate many students graduate from high school without basic skills essential for them to be productive members of society. The most basic of these skills is the ability to think. As a result of these studies there …

A Case Study Of Strategic Planning Practices Within The American Association Of Bible Colleges., Gregory L. Johns

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The American Association of Bible Colleges (AABC) is the official accrediting agency for undergraduate Bible college education as recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation (COPA). As such, it is concerned with the establishment and monitoring of educational and professional standards within its present membership of ninety Bible colleges. One present area of concern is the need for continued development of formal, comprehensive planning among Bible colleges, many of which face uncertain futures. Increasing Levels Of Abstract Reasoning Ability In First And Second Graders Through Instruction In Inferential Thinking And Analogical Reasoning, Shelley Cindy Obrand

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The ability of first and second graders to use reasoning skills was addressed by the implementation of strategies to develop inferential thinking and analogical reasoning. Piagetian theory was researched in reference to expected levels of cognitive development. The target group of students received instruction in problem-solving to enable them to make inferences. They also received instruction in determining relationships to enable them to solve analogies. Instructional strategies included: modeling, verbal rehearsal, metacognition, peer tutoring, manipulative learning, and discovery learning. The students' progress was measured by Precision Teaching (a monitoring system involving charting to document growth). Inservice training was provided by …

Teaching Self-Esteem To Improve Performance In Eighth Grade Basic Earth Science, J Mark Huffines Sep 1989

Teaching Self-Esteem To Improve Performance In Eighth Grade Basic Earth Science, J Mark Huffines

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Low performance in a basic eighth-grade earth science class was addressed by a one-class-period per week self-esteem unit presented by the writer and daily positive self-concept reinforcement methods implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Students were presented concepts of self-esteem such as "self-talk,” “irrational beliefs,” “setting and attaining goals,” and “positive relationships” and participated in discussions concerning their feelings about themselves, school, families, and others. There was a standardized measure of self-esteem pretest and posttest, and student performance was measured via comparison of their earth science grade average between the first and the tenth week. Students improved in both grade …

A Comparative Study Of Two Educational Techniques Used In Teaching Law Enforcement Officers How To Classify Homicides, John E. Douglas

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Law enforcement efforts in homicide cases focus on swift and accurate apprehension of a suspect. A new investigative technique developed at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Academy. called criminal profiling, now exists to assist in the classification of homicide cases and thereby directs the investigator's attention to certain types of suspects.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching homicide classification based on the case method as compared to a traditional teaching approach would enhance law enforcement officers' ability to identify key crime scene indicators used to classify homicide cases by primary intent.

The sample included …

A Cost Benefit Study Of Clinical Education In An Entry-Level Master’S Degree Program In Physical Therapy., Risa A. Granick Sep 1989

A Cost Benefit Study Of Clinical Education In An Entry-Level Master’S Degree Program In Physical Therapy., Risa A. Granick

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The costs associated with clinical education in physical therapy and other health professions have been debated by educational and hospital administrators in recent years. The assumption has been that these programs incur a cost to the clinical facility. To date, the physical therapy literature has been limited in cost-benefit studies with no definitive conclusions. This study examined the costs of Clinical education in a selective entry-level master's degree program in physical therapy to determine what monetary costs and benefits accrue to clinical affiliation sites and what factors are related to the monetary costs or benefits of clinical education.

Study participants …

A Computer Program To Increase Comprehension Of The Cartesian Rectangular Coordinate System In High School Pre-Algebra Students, I Sheck Exley

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The high percentage of high school Pre-Algebra students having difficulty learning the abstract concept of graphing ordered pairs on the Cartesian rectangular coordinate system was addressed by the creation and implementation of a computer-managed instruction program. Modules included a pretest, instruction, two practice sessions, and a posttest. To increase motivation and thereby enhance learning, the practice modules were designed in the form of a game. Students were exposed to the program on computers over a period of two weeks. The results indicated a greater increase in achievement for the target group than for four similar Pre-Algebra classes of this researcher. …

Can Drama Improve Student Performance In School?, William R. Peach

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem of the existence of a number of students exhibiting low self-esteem and unacceptable behavior in fourth and fifth grade was addressed by involving a representative sample of the students population in the production of a major musical show. The Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Test (Ellen V. Piers and Dale B. Harris, 1969), an analysis of students’ effort and behavior grades before and after the production, and an analysis of numbers of instances of administrative/ guidance referrals was used to evaluate whether or not involvement in drama would produce improvement in student self-esteem. All students who signed up to audition …
