Composition And Analysis Of Music Using Mathematica, Marianella P. Machado, Christopher W. Kulp, Dirk Schlingman
Languages, Cultures, and Humanities Faculty and Staff Research
In this paper we demonstrate how to create and analyze musical compositions using Mathematica. In §1, we begin by demonstrating how to create a musical composition for an orchestra based on the butterfly curve using traditional means. In §2, we then show how a computer generated piece based on any curve can be composed using Mathematica. Finally, in §3, we show how Mathematica can be used to analyze musical compositions using the methods from nonlinear time series analysis.

Addressing Sensitive Issues Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen, Melissa Schutt
Addressing Sensitive Issues Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen, Melissa Schutt
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
It was a Wednesday morning, and the class of pre-service elementary teachers was discussing sensitive topics in children's picture books. Melissa had prepared several tables with representative literature dealing with topics such as divorce, adoption, sexuality, religion, and death, and students were reading and discussing the books. Suddenly Dorothy noticed a student clutching one of the books to her chest and smiling. Dorothy walked over to her and the student said, "I love this book. There were no books like this when I was a little girl."

Humanizing And Establishing Presence In An Online Course: The Role Of Introductory Videos In Distance Learning, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff
Humanizing And Establishing Presence In An Online Course: The Role Of Introductory Videos In Distance Learning, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff
Instructional Development Center Faculty and Staff Research
Some faculty may find it difficult, if not impossible, to provide a similar classroom experience online as is provided typically in a face to face class. Faculty members can find it even more difficult to establish an instructional relationship with students in an online course as they do in a face-to-face course. Online learning is known to be more solitary and students report that they feel somewhat disconnected from the class when they take a course online. The challenge in designing online courses is for faculty members to establish their teaching presence by humanizing the online classroom experience for their …

No matter how long or often we teach a course, in order to keep ourselves fresh, to provide a challenge, and to adapt to the shifting academic environment, we like to change the syllabus. Next semester, to include more contemporary and non-USA Americans in our Introduction to American Literature II survey, we're adding Alice Munro's "Walker Brothers Cowboy."

A Phenomenological Interpretation Of John Dewey's View On Education, Wasim Qazi Dr., Khalid Rawat
A Phenomenological Interpretation Of John Dewey's View On Education, Wasim Qazi Dr., Khalid Rawat
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Education in our times is promoting nihilism. The reason for this conclusion is that modern education is largely knowledge based and asks the learner to learn ideas that have nothing in common with the reality of the learner. Knowledge, on the other hand, does not enjoy absolute value, and, to say that a person who has more knowledge is more valuable is wrong. John Dewey’s criticism on traditional education is equally valid for modern education, for modern education is not performing its functions properly. The function of education is to establish a strong relationship between learner and Being. However, modern …

Will Fayette County schools Superintendent Stu Silberman achieve his goal to make the academy one of the highest-achieving schools in the state without changing its demographics? In January, Silberman told parents that much of their children's low-test-score problem could be attributed to the principals and their ability to motivate their staffs. He said principals -- one at a high-scoring school and one at a low-scoring school -- could be switched, and that the scores would flip-flop in two years. He subsequently selected Principal Peggy Petrilli to lead the new academy.

Do you view Africa as one big country or are you aware of the many languages, cultures, and countries that are there? Or do you just turn off until the next news item comes up?

Stressing Concepts And Teaching In The Classroom: A Low-Technology Approach Using Concept Tests And Classroom Polls, Walter S. Borowski

Electronic student response technologies can be used effectively to increase learning in the classroom. Although these systems are not terribly expensive, their purchase may be out of reach for many departments and institutions. Here we model a low-technology approach that stresses active learning, peer teaching, and testing student understanding of key concepts by using think-pair-share sessions and in-class responses to key concept-test questions.
Questions used in class are chosen carefully to emphasize a concept essential to understanding some aspect of geoscience in an introductory geology course. Each class involves the introduction of a key concept question or questions followed by: …

There is a leadership crisis in our school district that needs to be fixed quickly. As the school board considers superintendent candidates, it is appropriate to discuss whether the next superintendent should be from inside the district or outside, and what qualities are crucial. Given recent history, I can think of nothing more important than finding a qualified person who knows the district, shares the board's vision and has a demonstrated commitment to Fayette County and its children. We need a steady hand on the wheel.

A new action figure of a frumpy librarian who moves her index finger to her lips with 'amazing push-button shushing action!' has librarians around the world raising their voices in protest." A public library director from Maine said in response to the bespectacled woman in a cardigan, long plain skirt and sensible shoes, "The shushing thing just put me right over the edge. It's so stereotypical, I could scream."

While it may be amusing to watch those in power above us blame each other and make excuses, in the end, it is disheartening. Those of us at the school level know that no matter who ultimately gets blamed, we're the ones who must be here for the children. We are reminded daily, there can be no excuses for failure. The legislature, the school board -- everyone -- must do his or her job, so that we can do ours.
