Benefits Of Dual Immersion Programs On Elementary School Students, Sofia Alvarez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The U.S. has always had a rich history of diversity with people coming from all over the world, bringing with them their languages, cultures, and customs. The question over how to educate and help English language learners or minority language speakers, and native English speakers learn another language, is one which can be answered through implementing programs which have helped both groups learn a new language and attain proficiency in that language. This senior capstone examines and discusses the benefit of dual immersion programs on elementary school students through the use of literature review. The findings indicate how dual immersion …

Teachers have stayed away from using graphic novels in classroom instruction. Many findings show that graphic novels benefit students but especially English Language Learners. Graphic novels require higher cognitive abilities than traditional novels. This research also explores the attitudes of teachers and students towards graphic novels as well as the possible problems …

Benefits For Integrating Physical Activity Into The Classroom, Danielle Rodriguez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Engaging in physical activity is essential to one’s well-being, especially for a child since their body is still in the developing stages. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of integrating physical activity in the classroom. Since there is less emphasis on being physically active, the value of physical activity decreases over time. For the time being, since sedentary lifestyles have been promoted, this put many children at a disadvantage. Not only do these lifestyles change in children’s lives, they also affect their academic performance as well. The results indicate that when students are encouraged to be more physically …

Subtractive Bilingualism: Encouraged By English-Only In Schools, Affecting First Language, Aurora Jimenez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The lack of bilingual education in schools, leads children to be more socially engaged in English. This report aims to answer how it is that language develops? What role does bilingualism play in language development? How is subtractive bilingualism influenced by social interactions? This capstone project illustrates how English Language Learners (ELL) without bilingual language support might have a negative impact on their overall language development. Social interactions have a lot to do in language development and acquisition, and people grow to rely more on one language (which is known as subtractive bilingualism). This project bases its information on a …

Expanding Kindergarteners’ Understanding Of Family Structure Regarding Same-Sex Parents, Emilia Sique
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There is a lack of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ+) representation in elementary school curriculum. This deficit leads to a lack of understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, limited gender role diversity, and a predisposition to teasing and anti-gay bullying among children. Therefore, I created a two-day lesson for kindergarteners at Del Rey Woods Elementary in Seaside, California. Participants were evaluated before, during, and after the sessions. Results showed an increase in understanding and acknowledging LGBTQ+ families.

Benefits Of School Gardening On Low-Income Elementary School Students, Caitlynn Lange
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The increase in obesity rates in America’s youth could be a reflection of undernourished school lunches, a decrease in physical activity, and the lack of knowledge of health and nutrition. Children who come from a low-income family are more likely to be affected by these circumstances. School gardening may be a way of replacing those impacts. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of school gardening on low-income elementary school students when implementing as part of the curriculum in schools.

Students with learning disabilities are two to three times more likely to be bullied than nondisabled peers (Banks, 2009). Students in special education need to be continually taught to identify the signs of being bullied and when to speak up to an adult if they are being bullied due to them being a hire target. It is important to teach students about expressing their feelings and identify common bully characteristics. Students with disabilities are already addressing challenges in the academic environment. There are many risks that can develop from a special needs child who is not reporting bullying at school …

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality that is associated with an intellectual and developmental delay. This is because there is an extra full or partial copy of the 21st chromosome called Trisomy 21, which is diagnosed prenatally or at birth. Parents of children with Down syndrome felt that health professionals displayed a lack of understanding and ignorance when delivering their child’s Down syndrome diagnosis (Mengoni & Redman, 2018). This may lead to concerns on the child’s quality of life and hinder timely appropriate intervention services for a child with Down syndrome. This is why I conducted a workshop in Claremont, …
