Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller
Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Emotional regulation is the ability to have control over one’s emotions; and typically develops in early childhood. Once children reach school age, they tend to be able to manage their emotions. When children are not able to regulate their emotions, they may have poorer social skills, and have challenges when learning in school. To help children further their emotional regulation skills, I have created a three-day lesson for a first grader class at Robert H. Down Elementary School in Pacific Grove, California.
Growth And Success In Special Education, Kimberly Berrelleza
Growth And Success In Special Education, Kimberly Berrelleza
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The agency I interned at was a charter school in Monterey Bay. They provide education for all students including students with special educational needs. I address the problem of structure and resources within the Special Education department. They struggled with high staff turn arounds, a loose tracking system, misused resources and a lack of communication within the special education staff, teachers and administrators. In order to solve all those challenges they have now assigned jobs and duties to get work done more efficiently and have put systems and protocols in place. My capstone project was to report on the growth …
Attendance Rates, Jamila Teal
Attendance Rates, Jamila Teal
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Absence is a normal part of childhood for kids going to school because sometimes life happens. Kids get sick, have family emergencies, the family might have to move, or lack consistent transportation to get to school. The Early Learning Program (ELP) is a non-profit organization that provides education for preschool aged children and focuses on making preschool easily accessible, primarily for low-income families. It is not uncommon for some families to take advantage of the ELP by not prioritizing taking their kids to school and getting them there on time. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the lives of …
How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn
How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of school that does not get enough attention. Many teachers are currently focused on academics instead of how their students are handling the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning. The focus issue addressed in this capstone project is SEL in the online classroom during COVID-19. An argument is made that distance learning causes a higher rate of mental health problems in students in all grade levels. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of teachers, parents, and students. The three action options that emerged from an analysis of the data included: …
Closing The Virtual Gap: Resources For At-Home Learning During Covid-19, Francis Nizza
Closing The Virtual Gap: Resources For At-Home Learning During Covid-19, Francis Nizza
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this time of COVID-19, at-home learning has become the new normal. In some cases, parents have been thrust into the dual role of at-home worker and at-home teacher. Additionally, disparities arise when you look at education levels of parents and socioeconomic factors. The goal of this project was to identify resources that are available to families to help overcome the many challenges to at-home learning: areas like access to the internet, proper work environments and access to wellness and mental health support, to name just a few. The process was done through collaborating with Learning for Life Charter School …
Pick Me Up: Covid-19 School Lunch Meals, Viviana Figueroa
Pick Me Up: Covid-19 School Lunch Meals, Viviana Figueroa
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In 2020 many students had to continue their education through social distance learning from home, which resulted in many students having food insecurities. The focus of this Capstone Project is on students who do not have access to Covid-19 school lunch distributions. This is important because many students may be eating unhealthy or not eating at all, which can result in physical and mental health issues. An evidence based argument proves that there has been a decrease of the number of students receiving a school lunch meal due to Covid-19. Consideration of the issue should include the perspectives of a …
¿Qué Es Eso?“ Socio-Emotional Learning In Ell Households, Vanessa Ortiz
¿Qué Es Eso?“ Socio-Emotional Learning In Ell Households, Vanessa Ortiz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone Project is on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) within the English Language Learner (ELL) community that immigrated from Mexico to the United States (U.S.). This project will address the importance of implementing SEL both at home and in the classroom. The goal of this capstone project is to create a better understanding of how essential social emotional learning is across environments, especially in the home and school environments. This is an important issue because a student's success may be dependent on the stability of their overall wellbeing and ability to cope with a range of feelings …
Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan
Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This Capstone project is focused on providing families and students with meals during a pandemic. The majority of students in California are enrolled in a free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Due to virtual learning it has become increasingly more difficult for students to be provided with school meals. Schools give opportunities to students to pick up their lunches but this is not beneficial for students with a lack of transportation or two working parents. Food security is important to allow students to focus in school and continue developing correctly both physically and mentally. Evidence shows that the number …
Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina
Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. To address this need, I created a 3-day program for 3 to 5 year-olds at Little Learners of Aptos School in Aptos, California.
Workout Routine, Valeria Sofia Maynez
Workout Routine, Valeria Sofia Maynez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Hope Services is an agency that focuses on supporting the community of adults with developmental disabilities. The work there focuses on finding employment avenues for the clients. This population faces difficulty in finding employment opportunities on their own and rely on these services for these resources. Everyone deserves the right to build an income and experience working in their lives. A disability or any obstacle shouldn’t prohibit a person of this opportunity. Due to an overdue stigma towards this group, they have to constantly prove they are fit to work and be productive assets in the workforce. This leads to …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Resume Building and Job Leads Brochure was created as a Capstone project to address the ongoing problem of homeless veterans in Monterey County not being unemployed. These former military members are not able to provide for themselves with a stable income in the civilian world. The project was approved by Bobby Merritt of the Marina, California Veterans Transition Center (VTC). The formatting for this project was a brochure, also known as a pamphlet, which catered to the needs of veterans experiencing homelessness who were aiming to gain employment. The brochure includes information on how to improve written resumes, key points …
Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada
Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Learning For Life Charter School is an alternative school that serves at-risk students. Due to challenges these students face, it is difficult for them to graduate and pursue higher education. Higher education can provide students with many opportunities. Financial issues, low motivation, and even lack of awareness of the multiple college opportunities available contribute to students failing to attempt or complete higher education. This leads to consequences including less opportunities in the future, lower lifetime earnings, and long-term health effects. In order to support and encourage the Learning For Life Charter School students to pursue higher education, educational workshops were …
Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz
Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In most elementary school curriculum, prosocial skills, such as the concept of kindness, are absent. When young children have underdeveloped prosocial skills, social relationships and academic achievement may suffer. Children need these skills to successfully interact with their peers and to achieve academic goals. To address the lack of prosocial skills in the curriculum, I have created a three-part lesson about kindness for Kindergarten students at George C. Marshall Elementary School in Seaside, California.
Cultivating Growth Mindset With Adolescents, Daisy D. Yang
Cultivating Growth Mindset With Adolescents, Daisy D. Yang
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some teens may believe that intelligence and other traits are fixed and unchangeable. As a result of having these fixed perspectives, adolescents may not be motivated to achieve academically and may give up in the face of challenge. Instead, teens can increase their confidence levels and motivation and adopt a growth mindset for their well-being. In order to address this issue, I created a two-day lesson for highschoolers at Rio Linda High School in Sacramento, California.
Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett
Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In many preschools and early childhood educational settings, mathematical skill-building is lacking in the curriculum. With a lack of math curriculum in a preschool classroom, students may not have foundational mathematical skills, may lack problem-solving skills, and may lack self-confidence in math skills. To help children develop their math skills, I designed a virtual math activity for 3 to 4-year-old preschool children attending Monterey Peninsula College Early Childhood Lab School.
Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi
Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There is little nutritional education in preschools. Children are not being taught about the importance of eating nutritious foods. When children are taught about nutrition, they will create positive eating habits that could make them less susceptible to health complications. To address the lack of nutrition education, I created a three-day lesson about nutrition for preschoolers at Teddy Bear Learning Center in Monterey, California.
Re-Center Education, Maddalen Vallejo Arguinzoniz
Increasing Arabic Language Graduate Students’ Awareness Of The Impact On Culture Of The Arab Labor Immigrants, Wafa Mahdi
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Arabic language students may learn how to write, read, and speak the language but may not understand contemporary Arab cultural aspects. One cultural aspect that Arabic language students should be aware about is the issues of labor migration in the Arabic-speaking regions. Understanding about labor migration may aid in acquiring job opportunities and in effective, culturally-appropriate communication in Arab countries. Therefore, I created a two days lesson for Arabic language graduate students at Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey In Monterey, California.

Importance Of Mental Health Awareness For Elementary School Students, Sarah Growitz
Importance Of Mental Health Awareness For Elementary School Students, Sarah Growitz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There are a variety of benefits from including school-based mental health awareness programs in elementary schools. Without proper education, students will not know what mental health is and how to seek help. Through the use of a literature review, teacher interview, and surveys, this capstone examines the importance of mental health awareness for elementary school students. Mental health can impact students' lives in such a negative way. It is extremely important for children to be aware that it is okay to struggle and learn how to properly deal with their emotions. It is also especially important for schools and educators …

Increasing Healthy Coping In At Risk Adolescents, Francisca F. Rios
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
At-risk youth lack healthy coping skills needed to manage stress. This lack of skills leaves adolescents vulnerable to more risky behaviors such as substance use. Therefore, I created a two-day lesson on healthy coping skills for adolescents at Mount Toro High School in Salinas, California.

Raising Awareness Of Good Oral Health To Preschool Children/ Good Oral Health; Beautiful Smiles, Areli Cruz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Children from low-income families may be less likely to receive dental care and may have dental health problems. These children may lack oral health literacy, which may contribute to their tooth decay, and affect their school performance and the quality of life. Therefore, I created a three-day lesson on how to maintain good oral health for preschoolers at the Pajaro Valley Unified School District/Child development Center-Linscott state preschool in Watsonville, California.

The consequences vary from mild to severe, and that suicide being the most severe consequence. Students suffer from depression, anxiety, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder are only some of the few of the mental health issues that students face. As a common long-term consequence, these three different mental health issues may result in suicide when they do not receive the proper care. Schools and teachers could work together to bring awareness to mental health issues. Incorporating mental …

Safe Ag Safe Schools (SASS) is a local pesticide reform organization with members at the state and local levels aiming towards sustainable agricultural practices. SASS focuses on serving agriculturally working families and community members who reside near agricultural areas. The problem addressed by the capstone is that too many marginalized, low-income communities are facing environmental injustices produced by large corporation’s methods of generating revenue. These injustices include high risk of pesticide exposure due to inadequate training and access to equipment. The project focused on assessing farm workers’ knowledge regarding pesticide safety and decontamination procedures. The Office of the Monterey Agricultural …
Benefits Of Visual Arts On Elementary School Students, John Yatsky
Benefits Of Visual Arts On Elementary School Students, John Yatsky
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
One will most readily agree that visual arts have been set aside from the everyday instructional curriculum that teachers use at the elementary school level. Contrarily, numerous evidences suggest that visual arts have an important role in elementary schools and can significantly benefit students’ academic performance. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of visual arts on elementary school students through the use of literature review from scholarly sources, anonymous online teacher surveys, and in-person teacher interviews. The results indeed indicate that visual arts are an important and necessary part of elementary education and that it is especially important …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This research used Literature Review, including peer reviewed articles, and primary research to analyze the importance of infusing creative learning in the school curriculum. Creative learning provided an education milieu that helped students reach their potential. Some researchers professed that when children are exposed to activities that include creative learning, they had a better understanding while learning about the different genres. Research indicated that teachers should familiarize themselves with how students learned in order to engage in course work. To promote a creative learning environment, teachers must receive the training required and learn about ways in which arts integration increased …
