Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
The first International Dance'Festival was held in 2005 at Minsky Hall and was sponsored by the Office of International Programs, Multicultural Programs, Student Heritage Alliance Center and the international student groups across campus. The event brought all the international organizations tog'ether and created a base to share and work with each other collaboratively. The success of this event inspired the student groups involved to make this celebration of cultural diversity an annual event and to expand on the quality and depth of participation. Since then Dance Festival performers danced each year to a packed house (1500 approx.) at the Maine …

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
The amount we request-$7,500-represents just under fifty percent of the projected operating budget for the spring Series of $15,538. The majority of the financial support for the Series will be provided by the English Department through its Elliott Fund and by the National Poetry Foundation through its Thayer Fund. The Honors College provides $1000 per semester to support the Series. The detailed budget appended to this letter provides an overview of projected expenses and revenue sources. In accordance with the Committee's recent request, I have adopted the standard budget form and supplemented it with a spreadsheet that itemizes projected expenses. …

Collaborating To Improve Inquiry-Based Teaching In Elementary Science And Mathematics Methods Courses, Paula A. Magee, Ryan Flessner
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
This study examines the effect of promoting inquiry-based teaching (IBT) through collaboration between a science methods course and mathematics methods course in an elementary teacher education program. During the collaboration, preservice elementary teacher (PST) candidates experienced 3 different types of inquiry as a way to foster increased understanding of inquiry based teaching (IBT). The experiences included a PST driven science inquiry and a mathematics inquiry where PSTs were learners and a science inquiry where PSTs were teachers. During and following the semester of the collaboration, data were collected to assess the impact of the inquiry experiences on the PSTs’ understanding …

President's Message On Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion, Janet M. Riggs
Reports from the President’s Office
Last spring I announced that we would take time this year to focus some of our thinking and conversation on the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion. There are many reasons for us to direct our efforts to this topic: the changing demographics in our society and the need to provide a welcoming environment to a diverse student body, faculty and staff; our responsibility to prepare students for living in diverse communities and working in diverse workplaces; and our desire to prepare citizens who will be sensitive to social injustices and motivated to right them. In addition, we cannot dismiss …
