The Predictive Relationship Between Student Food-Insecurity And Basic Psychological Needs Within College Students, Andrew Joel Tlucek
The Predictive Relationship Between Student Food-Insecurity And Basic Psychological Needs Within College Students, Andrew Joel Tlucek
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In recent years, researchers have determined food insecurity affects a college student’s grade point average (GPA), mental health, campus status, and social life. While each of these findings is valuable for post-secondary faculty and their decision-making, none can determine whether a student’s basic psychological needs are affected by their food insecurity (FI), which is paramount in a student’s success inside and outside of the classroom. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a predictive relationship between the severity of a student’s food insecurity and their basic psychological needs satisfaction. To accomplish the study, one hundred …

Interpreting English-Medium Instruction In Affiliated Colleges In India From A Third Space Perspective, Matthew A. Witenstein
Interpreting English-Medium Instruction In Affiliated Colleges In India From A Third Space Perspective, Matthew A. Witenstein
Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
English-medium instruction (EMI) as a global phenomenon continues to rapidly grow in non-native English-speaking countries (Dang et al. 2021). In Asia, evidence of this growth can be inferred by the sheer number of EMI-centered journal articles and edited volumes (Barnard and Hasim 2018; Fenton-Smith et al. 2017). I focus this study on affiliated colleges in India, where EMI interests reflect the aforementioned. Organizationally, the Indian higher education system is based on University of London’s federal university (Singh, 2003) where universities provide central functions like curricular and exam development and degree conferral. Colleges affiliated to them contain nearly 90% of the …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Teachers When Enrolled In An Asynchronous Certification Program: A Phenomenological Study, Sara R. Allen
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Teachers When Enrolled In An Asynchronous Certification Program: A Phenomenological Study, Sara R. Allen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of teachers when enrolled in an asynchronous pre-service educator certification program. This study was guided by John Keller’s theory of motivation, as it explained the motivational factors that influence the Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS) model for teachers who have completed an asynchronous educator certification program. A qualitative hermeneutical phenomenology design was combined with snowball and convenience sampling to enroll 10 participants from a school district in the Midwest. Responses from semi-structured individual interviews and a focus group with five participants were collected, and program description letters were obtained from all participants. …
Exploring The Writing Center's Role On At-Risk Students' Self-Efficacy And Writing Performance: A Phenomenological Study, Lacey Sipos
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the beliefs and attitudes regarding at-risk higher education students’ experiences with using their institution’s writing center services at a public state university in the Northwestern United States. The research was a transcendental phenomenological approach that used psychologist Moustakas's methodical data analysis procedures and guidelines to construct descriptions that captured the essence of the lived experiences of at-risk students who participated in the study. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. Previous research continues to examine multiple factors that may contribute to at-risk student populations' underutilization of …

Catalysts For Change: The Sacralizing Impulse Of The Second Great Awakening And Its Transformative Impact On American Higher Education, Blake S. Hart
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation delves into the profound impact of the Second Great Awakening on American higher education and its enduring social consequences. Examining the period from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, the research uncovers the core belief that drove the Awakening—that America and its citizens were chosen for a divine purpose, endeavoring to manifest the kingdom of heaven on Earth. It explores how Protestant-led revivalism and social reform movements fueled by this core belief influenced the establishment and evolution of American higher education. Through in-depth case studies of Andover Theological Seminary, Lane Seminary, and Oberlin College, the research …

Alumni Perceptions Of Formative Feedback During The Dissertation Process While Pursuing A Doctoral Degree In Biomedical Science At A Historically Black College And University: A Phenomenological Study, Shontell M.N. Stanford
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to discover through the perceptions and lived experiences of biomedical research Ph.D. alums who earned their terminal degree at a southern regional Historically Black College and University (HBCU) if the formative feedback they received impacted their dissertation process. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory and it’s suggestions of how behavior cultivated by a mentor’s actions and feedback changes the mentee’s behavior and can mature into self-efficacy. This study sheds valuable insight through the lenses of this phenomenological qualitative research methodological strategy of one-on-one interviews, questionnaires, and document reviews. The findings not only uncovered …
