All ETDs from UAB

CULTURAL CONNECTEDNESS AND NATIVE AMERICAN MENTAL HEALTH SHARYN W. HILLIN EDUCATIONAL STUDIES IN DIVERSE POPULATIONS ABSTRACT Recent research has indicated a possible connection between the destruction of Native American culture and communities and mental health disparities among Native Americans in the United States. While numerous studies have been conducted among Native Americans in western regions of the United States that establish a relationship between cultural connectedness and mental health resiliency, no such relationship has been investigated in the southeastern region of the United States, particularly within the state of Alabama. Using a blended ethnographic phenomenological methodology, ten Poarch-Creek Indians in …

Shakespeare’S Tragic Heroines: Personality And Status Versus Gender, Ryann Grace Howard Jan 2024

Shakespeare’S Tragic Heroines: Personality And Status Versus Gender, Ryann Grace Howard

All ETDs from UAB

Readings of Shakespeare’s female characters as presentations of ideals – such as innocence – or as characters limited by the innate nature of their gender fail to understand the full personalities and challenges these characters have. The chosen characters are discussed in the pairings of Cordelia and Cleopatra (queens) and Desdemona and Juliet (high-status ladies) to show how this thesis’s chosen female characters are presented through their individual statuses and personalities rather than their genders.

For centuries, philosophers have been kept busy by the question of what it means to be recognized. In the early 1990’s the Critical theorist Axel Honneth synthesized ideas put forth by Hegal and George Herbert Mead to propose his theory of Recognition, which suggests that society advances forward when humans exercise moral recognition of each others’ positive attributes; only then can people within society achieve a positive-relation-to-self. While Recognition is not greatly applied to literary theory, I believe that we can use it to explain the main character’s interactions with the people in his community in Cormac McCarthy’s Suttree (1979). …

“Then Let Them Use Us Well”: How The Folger Edition Of Shakespeare’S Othello Limits Sexuality And Character Agency, Ann Elizabeth Mulherin

All ETDs from UAB

Since Shakespeare’s first folio and quartos were initially published directly after his death in the early seventeenth century, various editors have altered his plays for their desired goals. With this in mind, the primary focus of my thesis centers around the Updated Folger edition of The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, edited by Barbara Mowat and Paul Werstine, which was published in 2017. The Folger edition repeatedly points out that they have tailored their rendition of Othello to allow modern audiences to understand Shakespeare’s language; they present the intention to accurately and helpfully gloss confusing, antiquated, or significant …

[Mis]Representing “India” And Other Colonial Territories In Donne’S Poetry: An Insight Into Colonialism’S Multifaceted Aspects, Urnisha Dutta Jan 2024

[Mis]Representing “India” And Other Colonial Territories In Donne’S Poetry: An Insight Into Colonialism’S Multifaceted Aspects, Urnisha Dutta

All ETDs from UAB

Colonial objects in Donne’s poems embrace multifaceted attributes, offering diverse reading perspectives. Considering their multifaceted aspects, it becomes impossible for a reader to ignore his poems’ interdisciplinary qualities. They often embrace philosophical, religious, political, and historical connotations. The colonial objects, appearing as “black” characters, silent women, or colonized territories in his poems, generate East-West binaries, Western subject consciousness, Eastern [mis]representations, world polarizations, and color contrasts. His female bodies’ misogynistic/sexual portrayal frequently ends in pulling up colonial references, associating their bodies with colonial landmasses. They often associate with his spiritual consciousness, complicating reading and textual interpretations. Critics thus cannot take a …

A Thematic Analysis Of Health Literacy And Education Disparities Regarding Medical Needs For Transgender Individuals, Rachel Mcmullen Jan 2024

A Thematic Analysis Of Health Literacy And Education Disparities Regarding Medical Needs For Transgender Individuals, Rachel Mcmullen

All ETDs from UAB

Transgender individuals experience many challenges within the healthcare system including discrimination, socioeconomic struggles, financial strains, a lack of educated healthcare providers, and a health system framework that makes it even more challenging for them to receive their medical needs (Korpaisarn and Safer). One contributing factor to this lack of education is that on average medical schools in the United States only spend approximately five hours total on the health needs related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals (Miller et al.). Another contributing factor is the stigma around LGBTQ individuals within the medical community. The stigma is concerning …

Filing The Serial Numbers Off: The Role Of The Author In Fanfiction Published As Original Fiction, Lauren Mcinnis

All ETDs from UAB

With the increase of authors altering and publishing fanfiction as original works of fiction, the practices and attitudes of fan communities cross over into the realm of traditional fiction. Throughout its history, fandom is a community built on the shared love of a piece of media or celebrity. The importance of community appears in fanfiction through Author’s Notes and comments sections; both of which traditionally published novels generally lack. When authors choose to make the transition to traditional publication which provides legitimacy that fanfiction lacks, they must remove most of their own identity and the fan-community that they originally relied …

Spilling The Tea, Memoir Of A Future's Past: A Scholarly Personal Narrative, Dominique Jerome Hector

All ETDs from UAB

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) individuals and topics have been at the precipice of media coverage and policy decisions for decades. With the passage of same sex marriage by the Supreme Court in 2015, this ushered in a new era of unearthing narratives that are unique to LGBTQ+ identities. Although this is a huge advancement for this population here within the United States, scholars have posited how these identities intersecting with other social constructs such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and social justice have reimaged how LGBTQ+ identities are viewed and treated in the country. Although there is …

Acceptability And Tolerability Of Ketone Supplements And Their Effects On Capillary Beta-Hydroxybutyrate Concentrations In Young Adults, Mickey Bolyard

All ETDs from UAB

Increased concentrations of circulating ketones via ketogenic diet (KD) have been associated with beneficial effects on a number of chronic conditions, including obesity, fatty liver disease, refractory epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases. KD has been associated with low sustainability and compliance, which has led to the creation and commercialization of exogenous ketones. However, past studies examining the effects of exogenous ketones in humans are very limited. In this study, we compared two different commercially available exogenous ketones, a ketone monoester (KME) and a ketone monoester-salt mix (KME+S), at two different doses (5 g and 10 g ketones). Fourteen healthy young adults …

Understanding Patient Factors Influencing Outpatient Follow-Up Among Adult Survivors Of Acute Kidney Injury: A Mixed Methods Study, Ciara Mitchell

All ETDs from UAB

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a growing health concern that is related to both short and long-term health consequences. AKI disproportionately impacts hospitalized patients who often experience competing health conditions that overrides knowledge and awareness concerning AKI diagnosis. Therefore, attending AKI follow-up care after hospital discharge may help increase knowledge and awareness as well as mitigate some of the poor health outcomes associated with AKI. However, AKI follow-up is low among this vulnerable population. Methods: To address this problem, a mixed-methods study was conducted to examine various patient factors influencing AKI follow-up and to explore the illness beliefs of …

Using the SCT constructs, the study investigates the cognitive, environmental, and behavioral factors influencing concussion reporting in D-III football players. The lack of research on how reciprocal determinism affects concussion reporting at the most vulnerable level of competition provides an opportunity to examine the cultural context of concussion reporting. The goal is to develop theoretically-based interventions that increase concussion reporting and change cultural narratives concerning concussion reporting behavior in under-resourced institutions. Methods: This …

Comparing Three Resilience Frameworks Across Outcomes For Children Who Have Experienced Multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences, Kevin Keane Jan 2023

Comparing Three Resilience Frameworks Across Outcomes For Children Who Have Experienced Multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences, Kevin Keane

All ETDs from UAB

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have a well-established relationship with poorer mental health, health, and school-related outcomes among children. ACEs researchers have identified potential resilience frameworks like the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child (NSCDC), Health Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE), and cumulative positive childhood experiences (PCEs) frameworks that identify protective factors to mitigate ACEs. However, each framework has a limited evidence base with no known studies comparing their effectiveness. The purpose of this dissertation was to compare the relationship between these three resilience frameworks and childhood outcomes in three domains (mental health, weight status, and school-related outcomes) among children …

All ETDs from UAB

Schools are complex and dynamic systems that require innovative leaders who are willing to invest in classroom teachers by giving them opportunities to lead beyond the four walls of the classroom. Because principals play an integral role in the academic achievement of students in their schools, it is incumbent upon principals to invest in teacher leaders to support students’ unique and multifaceted needs. The knowledge teachers gain because of leadership experiences often strengthens their professional dispositions and expands their interest in other critical roles in the system such as becoming an instructional coach, interventionist, principal, or curriculum specialist. A systematic …

Significant research exists concerning crisis management in schools; however, educational leaders were unprepared for the COVID-19 pandemic (Bratianu & Bejinaru, 2021; Diliberti et al., 2020; Tomasik et al., 2020). This crisis was different from any experienced in modern times. It impacted the entire world in terms of politics, economics, education, and way of life. New issues emerged due to the necessity for schools to implement remote learning. Among those issues were online learning, the disparity of the haves and have nots among students, social and emotional well-being of students, learning loss, and the role of the educator (Martinez & Broemmel, …

The Role Of International Faculty In Comprehensive Campus Internationalization, Melissa Williamson Hawkins

All ETDs from UAB

Faculty engagement is an acknowledged imperative for accomplishing the goals of comprehensive campus internationalization. In addition, transformational international and intercultural experiences are known to motivate faculty involvement in internationalization (Childress, 2018). This study proposes that the large numbers of international faculty working in permanent positions on university campuses, who have already had these transformational experiences by having adapted to a new country and culture, are an underutilized resource towards internationalization goals. In a mixed methods study conducted at a large, research university in the southeastern United States, the perspectives of international faculty on their current and potential role in internationalization …
