The purpose of this study was to investigate the organizational readiness of a public school district in Alabama for the delivery of 60 minutes of weekly EHE using constructs of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). This study was intended to identify the stage of readiness, decisional balance, self-efficacy, the extent to which the school district was engaging in behaviors that may …

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (2011), The National Staff Development Council (2012), and the report released by the U.S. Department of Education (2011), recommends individualizing professional development and emphasizing the application of knowledge to practice. To meet the challenges of educating learners from all levels, teachers need professional development that is ongoing and job embedded (Neuman & Wright, 2010; Ochshorn, 2011). A coach can be a valuable resource in leading this high-quality professional development. Coaching provides educators with authentic opportunities to learn from, and with, one another inside the classroom and improves the classroom experience for …

The Effects Of Six Weeks Of High Intensity Interval Training (Hiit) Or Moderate Intensity Training (Mit) On Antioxidant Capacity And Metabolic Health In Obese/Overweight Males, Samuel Pierce Cauffman

All ETDs from UAB

Background: Obesity is an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Oxidative stress or low total antioxidant capacity has been shown to be associated with decreased insulin sensitivity (SI) in overweight/obese individuals. Exercise training has been shown to improve systemic antioxidant capacity (TAC) and SI; however whether or not correlations between SI and TAC observed under untrained conditions are associated following exercise training is less clear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to determine if SI was correlated with serum TAC in a cohort of overweight/obese men at baseline and following six-weeks of exercise …

Coronary heart disease (CHD) disparities persist for low socioeconomic populations, in spite of declines globally. In order to reduce these disparities, it is critical that investigators better understand determinants of health that exacerbate these disparities. All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the perspectives of Alabama school principals’ administrative roles and experiences in implementing the Educate Alabama Teacher Evaluation System. Scientific Reasoning In Preschoolers, Cora B. Causey

All ETDs from UAB

One of the most pressing issues in the field of early childhood is the support of young children’s science learning by using what educators know about how children develop and learn combined with the concepts, tools, and structure of science learning. Science literacy in the U.S. includes not only the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts but also specific types of abilities: the practices of thinking, reasoning, analyzing, and communicating. Preschool children have the capacity to use reasoning and inquiry skills as they investigate how the world around them works. However, current traditional science curriculum for preschoolers limits opportunities to …

All ETDs from UAB

High profile deaths of unarmed African-American males caused much discourse in the years 2012 through 2015. Embedded in the news and on the minds of people of all ages were these deaths and the circumstances that surrounded them. Documentation of actions by some of the young males indicated that questionable behaviors existed prior to their demise. However, little documentation exists regarding attempts to assist these African-American male youths in changing these undesirable behaviors. One traditional approach to meeting the needs of African-American male students occurs through mentoring. Although, the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative launched by President Obama’s administration sparked an …
