Significant evidence has identified the importance of physical activity to the overall health and reduction in disease among humans. The World Health Organization (WHO) has implemented physical activity recommendations as guidelines to increase physical activity among the world population. However, evidence continues to show high levels of self-reported physical inactivity and growing prevalence of related chronic diseases (i.e. type 2 diabetes, stroke, and obesity), particularly among women. Background: Sleep is fundamental to overall health and wellbeing. While poor sleep habits have the potential to affect individuals in all phases of life, college students may experience unique challenges related to sleep health as they undergo a significant transition in their life. Diabetes is a growing problem in public health and the African-American population. Preventive measures such as changes in diet, increasing physical activity, and weight control are behaviors that will lead to a healthier lifestyle and prevent the onset of diabetes. The purpose of this study was to determine if the National Diabetes Education Program Power to Prevent curriculum improved diabetes prevention perceptions and behaviors among participants receiving the curriculum. The study tested the effectiveness of Power to Prevent specifically designed for African-Americans, paired with scripture in a bible school format, for diabetes prevention in local Baptist churches in Birmingham, AL. …
