The Status Of The Elementary School Principalship In Utah, Sherman Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The aim of this study is to record the status of the elementary school principalship in the State of Utah during the 1951-1952 school year.
The problem arose from a situation in which the writer, as President of the Utah Elementary School Principal's Association, was continually asked questions pertaining to the status of this group, and because there was a scarcity of current information available upon which to base reliable answers to these requests.
This situation led to the formulation of the study herein presented--a survey of conditions as they existed in Utah during the 1951-1952 school year. It should …

Relative Curricular Emphasis In Some Utah High Schools During The 1941-1951 Years, Edward W. Payne
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To have a sound and complete philosophy of education is a relative must for all people concerned with the teaching of children. Fortunate is the school whose administration and faculty have in common a functional definition of the term "curriculum" and its place in their total philosophy of education. The school program of only a few decades ago consisted of the strict disciplinary type of teaching, with only a few available subjects which were intended to develop the total capacities of the student. The new philosophy recognizes the variation in students as individuals. One must not assume that there is …

Revenue Trends And Sources Of Revenue In The Public Schools Of Utah Between 1916 And 1950, G. Frank Raymond
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the past few years revenue for the support and maintenance of public schools in Utah has become a subject of increasing concern and discussion. Considerable effort has been made on the state level in an attempt to equalize the financial programs among the school districts in the state. Much of this effort has placed its emphasis upon property tax as the major source of school revenue, both on the local level and the state level. Inflationary trends in the national economy have added to the aggravation of this problem. It has become increasingly necessary to seek additional revenue in …
A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris
A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the schools of Utah, as elsewhere in the nation, a situation has arisen which is of vital importance to the continuance of orchestral music. We find, on the basis of casual observation, that the string instruments are not being taught on an equal basis with the band instruments. It is generally assumed that band and orchestra instruction are equally desirable in an instrumental program. Unfortunately, many school authorities are not aware of the necessity of such equal opportunities for school children and as a result we may find string music relegated to an insecure position in our educational system.

A Study Of The Factors Used To Determine Pupil Marks By The Male Physical Education Directors In The High Schools Of Utah, Vaughn William Gordon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Much criticism has been directed at the physical educators in most of our public schools regarding their methods of determining pupil marks for participation in physical education classes. This criticism has come from many sources. It has come from physical educators, educators, pupils, and the general public. Bookwalter, a leader in the field of physical education, states:
More frequently than one might suspect, pupil's marks in physical education have been determined the night before marks were to be issued. They were then based upon attendance and the teacher's ability to remember the pupil's conformity to rules. Teachers have been known …

Much has been written and several studies have been make concerning the organization and proper use of advisory councils. This problem at the present time calls for additional study and evaluation.

A Study Of Adult Reading In A Selected Rural County Of Utah, Lucy V. Heaton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most remarkable developments of the present age is the apparently large increase in the reading public. The vast output of reading materials being purchased would seem to be evidence that reading is playing an increasingly important part in the daily lives of most people. Magazines and other publications crowd our stores, our homes, our very tables; at first glance, one would think that reading matter usurps our attention, and that we have come to depend upon it. The modern reader glances at the label on a can to learn its contents and uses. He reads the weather …

A Study Of The Need For Supervision Of Instruction In The High Schools Of Utah, Caseel D. Burke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Supervision of instruction, in the schools of the United States, has developed through a long and arduous process to the position where it is today considered by our leading educators to be a vital part of the educational system. It has been used in varying degrees of intensity as a tool in helping education to achieve its goals, but seldom has it been utilized so energetically and so skillfully as to produce the best possible results. There is considerable evidence, that supervision, with its resultant beneficial effects, has been applied less vigorously in the secondary schools than it has in …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Intramural sports appeared in schools long before interscholastic athletics. Students within schools formed clubs and competed against one another. This student intramural competition increased until in 1915 Michigan and Ohio State each inaugurated a department of intramural athletics under the direction of one man. In 1915 John Wilce wrote the first treatise on intramural sports. In the army camps of World War I this type of intramural activity received a tremendous boost. In 1925 the high schools throughout the country began organizing intramural departments.
By 1941 the enthusiasm of physical education instructors for a comprehensive intramural program had become so …

The work with the committee led to further study, which finally led to the writing of this thesis.
After a tentative formulation of the problem, a program of reading was outlined to ascertain current trends in pupil-progress reports. A request was mailed to all school …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study is part of a larger project which is still in progress in Box Elder County, Utah. Mr. J. Wesley Norsley, chairman of the Central Sponsoring Committee, makes the following statement of its purpose.
The project described in this report is an educational experiment. It is intended as nothing more. The aggregate of Box Elder County is its laboratory; its people and their resources: the materials.
The experiment issues from realization that democracy, suddenly grown intensely important to Americans, is based in home and family, and that the vitality of this key institution is declining.
The success of the …

An Evaluation Of The Health And Physical Education Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, Israel C. Heaton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the past ten years there has been an increased evidence of the importance of health and physical education in the United States. Leaders in this field are attempting to establish physical education in its rightful place in the school curriculum. The Research Quarterly for October, 1936 says:
It (physical education) should be dignified by providing a definite curriculum content comparable to that in academic fields, as opposed to the traditional practice of merely giving a child exercise regardless of the medium envolved. (12, p.99)
The growth of health and physical education in Utah has been very slow. In 1908 …

The primary objective of the program is to train these boys to become farmers or farm leaders. From time to time the following questions have been asked: Do …

The Need Of Public Junior Colleges In Utah, Evan B. Murray
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
“The need for junior colleges becomes more urgent from year to year. I would recommend that the legislature make provision for the establishment and maintenance of state junior colleges at such centers as it may deem advisable.” This is a quotation from state Superintendent C. N. Jensen.
The following study is intended to answer, to a degree at least, the two questions inherent in this statement: namely, Is there a need for state junior colleges in Utah? If there is a need, where should they be established?
