Thinking And Action: Preparing Students To Engage Complexity Within Themselves And In The World, Julia Van Der Ryn Oct 2014

Thinking And Action: Preparing Students To Engage Complexity Within Themselves And In The World, Julia Van Der Ryn

Julia van der Ryn

This essay explores the dynamic tension between the human need to cultivate an autonomous identity and the desire to be part of a larger reality, suggesting that authentic morality emerges from a person’s struggle with the ever-shifting overlap between these two drives. Creating an intersection between thinking and action, service-learning pedagogy draws us into a creative confrontation with these drives, preparing students to engage complexity within themselves and in the world.

Challenges And Successes With Including Kentucky's Parents In School-Based Decision Making: Pilot Year School Councils Respond, Jane Clark Lindle Oct 2014

Challenges And Successes With Including Kentucky's Parents In School-Based Decision Making: Pilot Year School Councils Respond, Jane Clark Lindle

Jane Clark Lindle

The 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) provided, among other measures, a new governance body for schools called "School Councils." These school-based, decision-making councils are composed of parents and teachers and headed by principals. This paper presents findings of a study that explored the effects of KERA's provision for school councils on parent involvement. Data were gathered from a survey of a nonrandom sample of 1991-92 pilot school councils (n=66). Most school councils reported that they used only two or three ways to notify parents of meetings, and only one or two methods to apprise parents of school decisions. Some …

Developing School Based Decision Making Capacities In Kentucky: Communication Satisfaction After The Pilot Year, Jane Clark Lindle Oct 2014

Developing School Based Decision Making Capacities In Kentucky: Communication Satisfaction After The Pilot Year, Jane Clark Lindle

Jane Clark Lindle

Among several innovations in public school curriculum and financing, the 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) also included a school-governance provision. School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Councils include administrators, teachers, and parents in addressing school-level curriculum and instructional issues. These groups have not had a history of collaboration. This paper presents findings of a study that described the developing relationships among these constituent groups at the end of the pilot year. Data were derived from a survey that asked 385 pilot-year School Council members to rate their satisfaction with council communication on a Likert-type inventory. Usable responses were received from 211 …

School Leadership And Educational Reform: Parent Involvment, The Education For Handicapped Children Act, And The Principal, Jane Clark Lindle Oct 2014

School Leadership And Educational Reform: Parent Involvment, The Education For Handicapped Children Act, And The Principal, Jane Clark Lindle

Jane Clark Lindle

Originally passed in 1975, the Education for Handicapped Children Act (EHA or P.L. 94-142) provided an unprecedented legislative definition of parent involvement. Congress mandated that parents be included in the educational decision-making process concerning handicapped children. This paper summarizes parent involvement as defined by the EHA, reviews the literature on implementation of EHA's provision for parent involvement, and offers recommendations for principals' leadership in supporting parent involvement. Principals are advised to create a school climate conducive to parent involvement through parent induction programs and staff development.

Taxation And Education: Using Educational Research To Inform Coherent Policy For The Public Good, Robert Knoeppel, David A. Pitts, Jane Clark Lindle

Jane Clark Lindle

In 2006, following a 30-year trend among the US states to remove the property tax from the revenue for public schools, the South Carolina General Assembly enacted Act 388 which replaced the property tax with a one-cent sales tax. The law decreased the budget capacity of school districts thus impacting educational equity and adequacy. This paper describes key policy makers’ and stakeholders’ interpretations of the pressure for property tax relief and highlight the importance of policy coherence in education finance, taxation, and accountability.

Whoever Heard Of Standardized Art? The Complexity Of Using Portfolios For Licensing Principals, Jane Clark Lindle Oct 2014

Whoever Heard Of Standardized Art? The Complexity Of Using Portfolios For Licensing Principals, Jane Clark Lindle

Jane Clark Lindle

One dominant metaphor in the standards-based movement to "professionalize" teaching is that of art and artist. The images of "performance" and "portfolio" are constantly in use, and since these metaphors can lead to interesting insights, pushing them to their logical conclusions is the purpose of this paper. It draws on the extensive literature in art criticism and asks if a portfolio evaluation is an oxymoron. Portfolios have been suggested as desirable evaluation tools because they are open-ended and allow for individual interpretation and reflection. Evaluation, however, requires a common structure and externally imposed, standardized value judgments--conditions that are difficult to …

Antiracist Education: From Theory To Practice By Julie Kailin., Laura Stivers Oct 2014

Antiracist Education: From Theory To Practice By Julie Kailin., Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

Although I help students to see the complexity of racism and how their actions or inactions can further individual and institutional racism, this book pushed me to think more deeply about the racism in my own university and classes and how I can more intentionally pursue antiracist education. The book is written for primary and secondary education, but it is useful for college and seminary professors in religion as well.

Slimmer, Brighter, And Nearly Perfect: The New Big History Textbook Is Here, Mojgan Behmand

Mojgan Behmand

Rarely has the appearance of a new textbook been the cause of such delight as broke out amongst the First Year Experience faculty at Dominican University of California in August 2013. The book that triggered such reaction is a seemingly unassuming volume, Big History: Between Nothing and Everything (2013), written by historians David Christian, Cynthia Stokes Brown, and Craig Benjamin, and published by McGraw-Hill. Why was the book greeted with such enthusiasm, you might ask? Was it that the world needed another textbook on history? That the Dominican faculty felt a special bond with one of the authors, Dominican professor …

Loyola University Chicago’s Teaching, Learning and Leading with Schools and Communities (TLLSC) program is an ambitious break from traditional, university-based teacher preparation models. This clinically-based initial teacher preparation program, fully embedded in local schools and community organizations, takes an ecological perspective on the development of sophisticated, reflective, and resilient elementary science educators who are able to prepare and inspire students and act as agents of change in their schools. This paper describes how TLLSC leverages time for science across elementary teacher candidates’ entire program through an emphasis on practitioner inquiry and integrated (inter- and trans-disciplinary) teaching and learning. TLLSC’s innovative …

Graduate Curricula In Software Engineering And Software Assurance: Need And Recommendations, T. B. Hilburn, Andrew J. Kornecki

Andrew J. Kornecki

In discussions about the development and use of computer systems and software products, the term “professional software engineer” is used repeatedly. In the last two decades there has been significant effort devoted to enhancing and advancing the state of professional software engineering (SwE) – new software engineering processes, methods, tools, and practices; creation of a software engineering body of knowledge [1]; development of a code of ethics and professional conduct [2], and software certification and licensing programs [3] . In 1989 the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University published a landmark report on graduate education in software engineering …

Redesigning The Secondary–Tertiary Interface: Queensland Review Of Senior Assessment And Tertiary Entrance, Gabrielle Matters, Geoff N. Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

A general conclusion of this Review is that senior secondary assessment and tertiary entrance in Queensland are in need of attention. It is more than twenty years since the current OP system was designed, and the broad features of the senior assessment system have been in place even longer. Over the past two decades, assessment and tertiary entrance processes have been the subject of ongoing modifications. Although the current processes have served Queensland well, we believe that they will be less adequate in meeting future needs and that the time has come for a redesign. Any redesign must recognise and …

Developing aircraft piloting skills takes years of training with experts to meet flight certification requirements. Not everyone can reach those standards, and the challenge is even greater for those with physical disabilities. There are opportunities to modify aircraft and train physically impaired students to be pilots; however, due to the high cost, few are able to do so. Able Flight seeks to change that by providing scholarship opportunities for people with disabilities to learn to fly and opening up new educational and career opportunities. Over 30 individuals with various disabilities have received scholarships since Able Flights inception, and all have …

Realizing Transitions: Common Core, College, Career, Patrick Randolph Sep 2014

Realizing Transitions: Common Core, College, Career, Patrick Randolph

Patrick T. Randolph

In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus, the great German psychologist, discovered that we forget up to 90% of what we learn within 30 days if we do not make a conscious attempt to retain the learned material. What is most troubling is that much of this information is actually forgotten just hours after the initial exposure. Ebbinghaus’s study has been reconfirmed with recent research in neuroscience (Kandel & Hawkins, 1992; Medina, 2009; Sousa, 2011). Applying these daunting numbers to our students’ retention of vocabulary, it is easy to understand why they forget a large percentage of the terms they study in their …

In order to verify the structural relationship between perceptual learning styles, English learning motivation, and achievement, this study investigated 2682 Korean EFL students' visual, auditory, kinesthetic styles, imagination, ideal L2 self, motivated behavior, and English proficiency. The data collected by means of a questionnaire were explored using a correlation analysis and structural equation modeling. It was found that while visual and auditory styles were positively correlated with motivational variables and English proficiency, kinesthetic style showed negative correlations with them. Furthermore, visual style proved to have the most substantial influence on achieving successful English proficiency, mediated by the ideal L2 self …

Challenges For Novice Principals: Facing 21st-Century Issues In School Administration, Russell L. Claxton, Samuel J. Smith Sep 2014

Challenges For Novice Principals: Facing 21st-Century Issues In School Administration, Russell L. Claxton, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Challenges for novice school leaders evolve as information is managed differently and as societal and regulatory expectations change. This study addresses unique challenges faced by practicing principals (n=159) during their first three years of the principalship. It focuses on their perceptions, how perceptions of present novices compare to those of experienced school leaders, and how pre-service programs can better prepare them for these challenges. Findings revealed that two themes shared relatively the same prominence among experienced leaders as they did with novices: navigating politics and gaining a sense of credibility. Experienced leaders expounded more on specific political hurdles with school …

Mind-Body Integrative Training: Firefighter Personal Protective Equipment (Ppe), Rodger E. Broome Phd, Josh Told, Zachery Lyman

Rodger E. Broome

The purpose of this research is to determine if differences in performance outcomes exist between the use of paramilitary instruction and a method of teaching informed by the Chinese philosophy Tài Chí when learning to don structural fire-fighting clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE). We hypothesize that keeping students in a process focus (i.e., Tài Chí method) rather than a high-pressure outcome focus (traditional paramilitary method) results in increased proficiency in the skill-performance outcomes (Selk, 2009). The assumption is that Tài Chí helps integrates students’ minds and bodies in the learning process and results in a higher quality of motor …
