In this commentary, we offer a perspective on the problem of authors reporting and interpreting effect sizes in the absence of formal statistical tests of their chanceness. The perspective reinforces our previous distinction between single -study investigations and multiple-study syntheses.

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Objective. The purpose of this study was to describe pharmacy school curriculum offerings in the areas of natural products and complementary/alternative medicine. Methods. Eighty-one schools of pharmacy in the United States were surveyed to determine the extent to which coursework addressing natural product or complementary/alternative medicine had been incorporated into their curriculum. Results. Usable responses were obtained from 64 schools (79 percent). Of these, 51 schools offered some exposure to these topics, while 40 offered courses exclusively on these topics. Most of these schools offered this instruction as an elective course focused primarily on natural products. Conclusion. These results indicate …

Teaching Adults To Read Better And Faster: Results From An Experiment In Burkina Faso, Helen Abadzi
Teaching Adults To Read Better And Faster: Results From An Experiment In Burkina Faso, Helen Abadzi
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
Two cognitively oriented methods were tested in Burkina Faso to help illiterates learn to read more efficiently. These were (a) speeded reading of increasingly larger word units and (b) phonological awareness training to help connect letters to speech. Learners were given reading tests and a computerized reaction time test. Although the literacy courses were shortened by the arrival of rains and government delays, the piloted methods helped adults read better than those in the standard "control" classes. Learners enrolled in the experimental classes performed better on the outcome tests than did learners enrolled in control classes. Ninety percent of the …

Adult Literacy: A Review Of Implementation Experience, Helen Abadzi
Adult Literacy: A Review Of Implementation Experience, Helen Abadzi
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
Worldwide, nearly a billion adults, at least 600 million of them women, are illiterate. Adult literacy is highly relevant to poverty alleviation efforts worldwide, because in the 21st century much of the information needed to make decisions and improve one's economic, personal, family, or political conditions is presented in written form. The Education for All goals include " achieving a 50 percent improvement in levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women, and equitable access to basic and continuing education for all adults." Adult literacy is also essential in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals. This OED study assesses the …
Improving Adult Literacy Outcomes: Lessons From Cognitive Research For Developing Countries, Helen Abadzi
Improving Adult Literacy Outcomes: Lessons From Cognitive Research For Developing Countries, Helen Abadzi
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
Despite the existence of about one billion illiterates in the world, adult literacy programs make up 1-5 percent of government or donor budgets, and they remain severely underfunded in comparison to primary education. Though dropout and course completion rates improved in the 1990s, the outcomes of literacy instruction are still modest and may have improved little since the 1970s. The results may disappoint governments and donors who expect that once taught, people will have usable skills and remain literate. The modest results make it hard to increase coverage and to argue for increased expenditures for this sector. The results may …

The book that emerges from an IFIP Technical Committee World Conference on Computers in Education is complex, and this complexity lies in the nature of the event from which it emerges. Unlike a number of other major international conferences, those organised within the IFIP education community are active events. A WCCE is unique among major international conferences for the structure that deliberately ensures that all attendees are active participants in the development of the debate. In addition to the major paper presentations and discussion, from international authors, there are panel sessions and professional working groups who debate particular themes throughout …

This case study analyzes implementation of an institutional policy restricting the use of graduate teaching assistants in freshmen-level instruction. Findings suggest units viewed implementation as a hierarchically determined compliance task or were able to make implementation an opportunity for creative problem definition and solving akin to the organized anarchy model.

“Most energy conservation information is designed for homeowners, even though an increasing number of people are renting,” says Leona K. Hawks, Utah State University Extension housing specialist. “Many renters develop a short-timer mentality and don’t worry much about energy savings. However, utility bills do add up quickly so renters may wish to conserve on their energy use,” she advises.

Using qualitative analysis and a Bourdieuian framework, authors investigated perceptions held by southern California African American and Latino high school students and their counselors regarding community colleges. Community colleges were found to be ambiguous assets, used by some students to enhance academic qualifications, but viewed by others as institutions of last resort.

Like inbreeding, if the proliferation of faculty tiering is problematic for academe, this institution is promoting faculty tiering, but at a lower rate than national trends. But, inbreeding and faculty tiering appear to be related, with more inbred faculty in lower tiered positions.
