Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder featured by impaired social skills, communication abilities, restricted activities and repetitive behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Among the individuals with autism, it is approximately estimated that 10% have autistic savant skills. The most common domains of savant skill are musical, numeracy, and artistic savant skill. After giving a basic overview of autism and savant syndrome, this starred paper reviewed studies of those three areas of savant skills. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate what research has been conducted to evaluate the performance of individuals with musical/numeracy/artistic savant skills. Theoretical Background of savant …
Cognitive Bias Modification Approaches For Adolescents With Anxiety, Catherine Trennepohl
Cognitive Bias Modification Approaches For Adolescents With Anxiety, Catherine Trennepohl
Culminating Projects in Special Education
The question that guided this review of literature was: Are cognitive bias modification approaches effective in reducing anxiety symptoms of adolescents? Anxiety is a typical reaction to stress, but some people suffer from excessive anxiety that affect their day-to-day life. Finding an intervention that is effective in a school setting without needing trained professionals would be beneficial. Cognitive bias modification focuses on interpretive or attention biases. CBM aims to modify those biases in order to help reduce anxiety in individuals.

For decades, schools and juvenile detention systems in the United States and abroad have used punitive disciplinary practices such as detention, suspension, expulsion, and jail sentences to address adolescent misbehavior. These practices are considered to be retributive in that they serve as repayment to society in the case of detention and to act as “desertion” of society in the cases of suspension or incarceration” (Flanders, 2014, p. 328). Zero tolerance practices, touted by both educational and juvenile justice systems, have escalated the use of such practices. However, little evidence exists to support that these retributive practices have reduced the number …

Focus of Paper: I identified 12 studies for the Chapter II Literature review. Given the broad range of the is topic, I chose to narrow it by focusing mainly on the inattention form of ADHD and elementary students in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. The studies in Chapter II were conducted in both educational and clinical settings. The Academic Search Premier and Google Scholar database I used to locate studies focus on a variety of keywords and keyword combinations: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Special Education, inattention, elementary, teaching strategies, learning strategies, therapy ball, stability ball, multimodal therapy, …

Current research addresses the importance of information exchange and trust between medical professionals and parents of children with autism, but relationships between special educators and parents are often overlooked. Special educators, specifically case managers of children with autism, need to have an understanding of a parent’s viewpoint regarding their child’s autism. Unlike some other medical or cognitive disability categories, autism spectrum disorder is unique in its extreme variety of how mildly or severely impaired a child may be. Through interviews with four parents of children with autism, this thesis explored the experiences that parents had in the Individualized Education Plan …

"Issues in Special Education Assessments with Limited English Proficiency Students"
Over the next two decades, American society will become increasingly multiethnic and multilingual (Utley & Obiakor, 1997). Utley and Obiakor indicated the number of children living in poverty will substantially increase, as will the number of homes where children speak a primary language other than English. Students who are poor or of a minority race or language are at a greater risk of needing special education services (Renchler, 1993). There is a booming population growth of limited English proficient students (LEP) in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. In …

Differences In The Leisure Activities Of Mathematically Advanced Secondary School Students, Mary L. Cornell
Culminating Projects in Special Education
A survey designed to gather information about extracurricular and leisure activities was distributed to 332 tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students between March 30, 1997 and June 1, 1997. Two hundred and ten surveys from the original sample were analyzed by grouping the various activities into eleven activity indices. Each index was then compared statistically using a series of one-way ANOVAs, and Tukey's box plots. Students were also divided into six groups based on their mathematical accomplishments, and their gender.
Statistically significant differences were found for six of the eleven Activity Indices. The Academic Index, Math Index, and Science and …

[...]The number of students with learning and behavioral problems in the mainstream classroom and the urgency of readdressing failure in the regular classroom is critical. Regular educators are concerned that many students who do not meet the eligibility requirements to receive special services are experiencing problems in the classroom. The number of students referred for assessments and possible placement in special education programs has increased dramatically.
Although special education has shouldered the primary responsibility for students with special needs, educational service delivery needs to be a shared responsibility of regular and special education teachers. Alternatives to traditional practices need to …

The return rate was 53% with scores ranging from 22% to 72% across both measures.
Elementary majors and students with at least one course in special education were more positive about their training programs. Secondary majors and students with no special education.course work were less positive about their training programs. The data demonstrated that even with a …
