Factors That Influence Students' Persistence And Degree Attainment While Matriculating Through A Doctor Of Education Program, Michele L. Braun

The purpose of this research study was to examine factors that influence doctoral students’ persistence and retention during various phases of professional development in the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program. This study used a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental methodology to explore doctoral students’ needs and experiences from the students’ viewpoint as they were matriculating through their Ed.D. program. The factors explored included competencies, cultural adjustment, student transition to/through doctoral education, professional role identification and commitment, doctoral program environment, academic integration, social integration, SCSU campus environment, advising, research experiences, financial resources, and orientation.

This is a qualitative multiple case study that analyzes and compares the purpose, roles, and drivers of change for continuing education divisions in public, four-year, post baccalaureate, comprehensive higher education institutions in the United States. The research stems from a historical standpoint. This study also examined processes carried out by continuing education leadership to demonstrate quality and accountability to their higher education institutions. This investigation focuses on the distinctive drivers that have triggered and influenced changes in continuing education units within higher education institutions.

Given the widespread popularity of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (SCM) in college student leadership literature, there is a surprising lack of attention to the assessment of leadership skills associated with this model. This study was aimed at gaining a greater understanding of leadership through an assessment of leadership attributes associated with the SCM. This research study was quasiexperimental and examined a leadership development series at a public, 4-year, Midwestern university. Undergraduate college students participated in a leadership development series over the ·course of a semester, with a follow-up analysis completed 2- 3 weeks into the second semester. …

The purpose of this study was to examine the formal policies and informal criteria used by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) administrators in making decisions regarding notification of parents for students with mental health concerns. The study also explored the expectations in making parental contact and if those expectations were realized. The role of the Virginia Tech tragedy on policy and procedures was also addressed.

This study examines the life skills practiced and acquired by student employees who were nominated for the Student Employee of the Year award at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University between the 2001-2002 and 2007- 2008 academic years. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contents of the nomination forms submitted by both supervisors and students reveals that the students represented in the sample did practice and acquire a great number of life skills- such as time management, decision making, supervisory skills, and computer and technology skills-through their student employment positions. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine how the Saint Paul College Transfer Center is used by students of different genders, ages, and ethnic groups. Since its implementation in January 2006, the Saint Paul College Transfer Center has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study also explored the transfer experiences of students who accessed the Saint Paul College Transfer Center. The study included an eleven question survey administered to 122 Saint Paul College transfer students. In addition, seven one-on-one interviews provided personal stories and insights shared by students.

A recent national survey found women hold only 23% of higher education institution presidencies (American Council on Education, 2007). However, women now earn 58% of all bachelor’s degrees and 4% of all doctorates (U.S. Department of Education, 2005). These findings suggest something may be interfering with the pool of capable women moving through the pipeline to attain higher education administrative positions. Gender differences in career aspirations have been suggested as one potential reason for this disparity.

School counselors, like many other school support personnel, receive little supervision and feedback on their performance.
