A Health, Physical Education & Recreation Program For The Todd County Consolidated School, James Holpp
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to outline an adequate, correlated program of health, physical education and recreation for the students of the Todd County Consolidated School of Elkton, Kentucky. The necessity for providing better programs of health, physical education and recreation in our public schools has been demonstrated in the results of the Selective Service medical examination during World War II. All our educational agencies are stressing the need for a unified, integrated, and functioning program of this type. This study makes an attempt to develop such a program in this one particular school.

Education And Living: Volume 1, Ralph Borsodi
Education And Living: Volume 1, Ralph Borsodi
School of Living Documents
In Education and Living, a two-volume work, Borsodi elaborated the model of the School of Living. Most of volume one consists of a critique of “mis-education.” Most of that critique focuses on the problems of centralization; centralization of industry, the economy, politics and education. The second volume of Education and Living explains Borsodi’s vision of achieving decentralization in detail. The second volume is in two parts: Right-Education and Re-Education. It explains how to educate for the “Normal” human being and for achieving the “Normal” way of living. This is not the “normal” of the bell curve, the average of a …

Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
Some years ago, the Australian Council for Educational Research prepared a table of the equivalent grades in the six Australian States. In 1945 and 1946 the R.A.A.F Vocational Guidance Service reprinted the upper section of this table, together with other information regarding post-primary courses and examinations, as "Comparative Educational Levels in the Australian States”. While it is now fairly evident, from the comparison of curricula end results in our curriculum survey, that there are no strictly comparable levels in the content of courses or in the mean ages of children, the R.A.A.F. table has apparently proved useful to head masters …

Some Current Problems In English Education, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
On the question of organisition at the secondary level Australia, as a whole has not given evidence of any very clear-cut policy. The common practice is to provide separate academic and technical schools in the capital cities and large country towns with certain intermediate types of school which may have a bias in one direction and may act primarily: as “feeders” to schools giving more advanced courses. Except in Tasmania the “modern school” has not emerged very explicitly. In many of the smaller country centres, however, we find dual or multi-purpose schools. It is not easy to say whether these …

Small Instrumental Ensembles In The Elementary School, John "Jack" William Murphy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The music teacher of today has only to look back as far as his own experiences as a music student to become aware that rapid and significant changes in the underlying philosophy of music teaching have occurred at all school levels. In general the emphasis has shifted from the development of mechanical skills through repetitive drill on formalized exercises, to the development of the whole child through participation in a broad field of pleasurable musical experiences. Carried further, the newer concept implies that these musical experiences will not be limited to the confines of the music department, but will carry …

Standards Of Elementary School Service, Robert E. Mcconnell
Standards Of Elementary School Service, Robert E. Mcconnell
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The time has come when every elementary-school teacher should be a college graduate. This could be accomplished immediately following the war if each state should require a college education as a prerequisite to the certification of newly trained teachers. When the standards for the education of teachers and for initial certification are raised to this level, the standards of school service will automatically reach an appropriate level. It is hoped that the public (parents) will soon rise up and demand this degree of professional respectability of the teachers of their children.

An Elementary Science Course Of Study Developed For Use In The Stockton Unified School District, David H. Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Elementary science has made rapid strides in the last four or five years. In our elementary schools we have the laymen and scientists of tomorrow. The masses should have a speaking acquaintance with science and know the value to society through its modern inventions and discoveries. Knowledge of facts discovered by scientists give rise to conceptions that vitalize thinking in many fields and cause the redirection of human activities. Scientific conceptions such as time, space, change, variety, adaptation, and interrelationships have exerted profound influence upon thinking in wide areas of human affairs. These concepts can never be mastered, but they …

Reform In The Primary School., J. M. Braithwaite, C. R. Mcrae, R. G. Staines
Future of Education
The pamphlet suggests reforms to primary school education as every Australian state there had been successive revisions of the course of study, all expressing a shift of emphasis away from monotonous grind and repetition, and towards such occupations as art, handwork, music, and physical education. But the movement towards better things was slow. [p. 5, ed]
We have seen that, during primary school years, the child grows in four main ways-physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. The function of the primary school is to ensure successful growth of all four kinds. It is a fair criticism of the average school that …

Inspiration, perspiration, and ventilation form a triumvirate by which all school situations can be met and conquered by the teacher of average ability, and the method will take care of itself, because out of the three a method will evolve which will fit the particular situation.
Six Books On Child Development, Robert E. Mcconnell
Six Books On Child Development, Robert E. Mcconnell
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
In the education of teachers for the elementary schools, it is important that they be tutored in the field of child-development as well as in subjects that give them a knowledge of life such as art, science, social science, mathematics, language and literature. The first deals with the learner and the second with those phases of life to be learned. Many young teachers report that in their early endeavors at teaching they have greater concern over the dealing with the child than in the branches of knowledge. The understanding of the child is the important consideration in many of their …

The new elementary school of the Central Washington College of Education, at Ellensburg, which was completed in September, 1939, is a foremost example of the new type of structure which is replacing the old and inadequate formal training school. It was designed to house a modern and functional elementary school and to be an integral part of a progressive teacher-education program. The curriculum is based upon contemporary life and individual student needs. It provides facilities for enabling teachers in training to secure the necessary experiences essential to the administration of the modern elementary school.

A Study Of The Betts Ready To Read Tests: Their Predictive Values In Determining Reading Achievement And Their Comparison With Other Predictive Measures, Charles L. Mills
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The ability to read is basic to the acquisition of knowledge in all school subjects. Consequently, classroom teachers have long been interested in what determines readiness for reading, and in tests which will predict reading achievement. Prominent among those which have appeared in recent years is the Betts Ready to Read Tests which in reality are a series of twelve individual vision tests that require expensive equipment, a great deal of time, and a certain amount of technical skill to administer, score, and interpret.
The purposes of this investigation are (1) to determine the predictive values of the factors of …
