Highways Of Expression, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Highways Of Expression, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Primary School Studies
First published in 1952, this pamphlet discuses how a teacher may go about encouraging creative expression. The fundamental problem of creative expression in schools is the problem of ensuring for each child an interested listener or reader.
The essential quality of artistic creativeness is that the product shall arise from an inward urge to use imagination creatively. The teacher's role is to devise situations in which children will feel the urge.
Power Over Words, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Children In Groups, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Children In Groups, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Primary School Studies
First published in 1952, this pamphlet explores some examples of group work in classrooms. The effect of groups is also examined and also how the best results can be achieved when creating groups and group work for children.
The following is a summary of what is needed for a group to work well.
1. It must be doing definite work for a purpose known to, and accepted by, each child in the group.
2. Each child must feel that he can help to achieve the purpose.
3.The purpose itself must satisfy some need perceived by each child as important.
4.The …

The Relationship Between The Intelligence & Emotional Stability Of Seventh & Eighth Grade Pupils, Thomas Boone
The Relationship Between The Intelligence & Emotional Stability Of Seventh & Eighth Grade Pupils, Thomas Boone
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A question nearly as old as the intelligence test itself led the author to make the investigation upon which this thesis is based. For years people in education and related fields have speculated as to whether the most intelligent children were the most stable emotionally or whether these brighter children tended more readily than the dull or average child to exhibit undesirable personality variations.
Practically everyone has, at some time in his life, used one or two isolated circumstances to prove the point that the more intelligent children were emotionally unstable or that the duller children were more unstable , …

An Examination Of Some Aspects Of Grade Placement Of Children, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
An Examination Of Some Aspects Of Grade Placement Of Children, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
The three investigations reported here deal with three aspects of the grade placement of children of the same age. Originally, they were carried out as independent projects, but as the conclusions became obvious it was seen that they were really closely related. The first attempts to answer the question "How many children pass through all stages of primary education without repeating a stage?”. The second compares the achievements in reading skills of children in the same grade but of different ages. The third is purely factual and compares the performances of children who are repeating a grade with those of …

The purpose of this study is to outline an adequate, correlated program of health, physical education and recreation for the students of the Todd County Consolidated School of Elkton, Kentucky. The necessity for providing better programs of health, physical education and recreation in our public schools has been demonstrated in the results of the Selective Service medical examination during World War II. All our educational agencies are stressing the need for a unified, integrated, and functioning program of this type. This study makes an attempt to develop such a program in this one particular school.

Education And Living: Volume 1, Ralph Borsodi
Education And Living: Volume 1, Ralph Borsodi
School of Living Documents
In Education and Living, a two-volume work, Borsodi elaborated the model of the School of Living. Most of volume one consists of a critique of “mis-education.” Most of that critique focuses on the problems of centralization; centralization of industry, the economy, politics and education. The second volume of Education and Living explains Borsodi’s vision of achieving decentralization in detail. The second volume is in two parts: Right-Education and Re-Education. It explains how to educate for the “Normal” human being and for achieving the “Normal” way of living. This is not the “normal” of the bell curve, the average of a …

Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Comparative Age-Grade Levels In State Schools Of The Australian States, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
Some years ago, the Australian Council for Educational Research prepared a table of the equivalent grades in the six Australian States. In 1945 and 1946 the R.A.A.F Vocational Guidance Service reprinted the upper section of this table, together with other information regarding post-primary courses and examinations, as "Comparative Educational Levels in the Australian States”. While it is now fairly evident, from the comparison of curricula end results in our curriculum survey, that there are no strictly comparable levels in the content of courses or in the mean ages of children, the R.A.A.F. table has apparently proved useful to head masters …
Some Current Problems In English Education, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Some Current Problems In English Education, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin
On the question of organisition at the secondary level Australia, as a whole has not given evidence of any very clear-cut policy. The common practice is to provide separate academic and technical schools in the capital cities and large country towns with certain intermediate types of school which may have a bias in one direction and may act primarily: as “feeders” to schools giving more advanced courses. Except in Tasmania the “modern school” has not emerged very explicitly. In many of the smaller country centres, however, we find dual or multi-purpose schools. It is not easy to say whether these …

Small Instrumental Ensembles In The Elementary School, John "Jack" William Murphy
Small Instrumental Ensembles In The Elementary School, John "Jack" William Murphy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The music teacher of today has only to look back as far as his own experiences as a music student to become aware that rapid and significant changes in the underlying philosophy of music teaching have occurred at all school levels. In general the emphasis has shifted from the development of mechanical skills through repetitive drill on formalized exercises, to the development of the whole child through participation in a broad field of pleasurable musical experiences. Carried further, the newer concept implies that these musical experiences will not be limited to the confines of the music department, but will carry …
