This essay outlines a stand-alone course on Frances Burney, suggesting that she offers a good entry point into eighteenth-century studies. Given that she wrote in so many genres—novels, plays, journals, and letters—such a course avoids the narrowness which often marks a single author course. In twelve weeks, the course studied ten works: four novels, five plays (three comedies and two tragedies) and a selection of journals and letters. The latter describes well-known figures in Burney’s social and literary networks in eighteenth-century London and leads to discussion of techniques of the epistolary, of diary-writing and of women’s life-writing. Frances Burney’s mastectomy letter, in its graphic and detailed depiction of the operation she underwent without anesthetic in 1811, does not always lend itself immediately to standard, scholarly classroom discussion. It tends, rather, to incite unusually intimate responses, as well as conversations about medicine and health today. In my teaching of the letter in literature courses at Université de Montréal over the course of the past 13 years, I have found that students are inclined to seize upon the subject of breast cancer as especially contemporary in its relevance and to share their own anecdotal knowledge of the disease. The construction of a course for adult learners who are not studying for a qualification or credits but rather for enjoyment and engagement with learning for its own sake, requires an approach centered on needs which may not be entirely academic. Drawing on students’ individual life experiences while avoiding assumptions based on familiarity with the material shapes the course and offers many benefits. "I Don’T Know That You Can Do That Anywhere Else": The Role Rural College Towns Play In The Formation Of Queer Identity, Amy Mcdowell, Ryan J. Parsons, Julia Kraus
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
Challenging dominant narratives suggesting that rural spaces are inhospitable to LGBTQ+ identities, this study examines how queer individuals navigate space, rurality, and queerness in Oxford, Mississippi, a historically conservative college town. Drawing on oral histories from the Queer Mississippi digital archive, we argue that rural institutions of higher learning (rural IHLs) and the college towns they are embedded in serve as critical sites of queer identity formation. The rural college town provides a unique space where LGBTQ+ individuals from both within and outside the South navigate self-discovery, social networks, and belonging. Working with Fredric Jameson’s influential discussions of utopia and world literature, the essay suggests that the prospect of utopia is frightening and also possibly boring insofar as it threatens to drain away the already waning possibility of experience in a postmodern, globalized world. In this world, resentment of the present seems to go hand in hand with a nostalgia for a fictitious past, underscoring the difficulty of conceptualizing new social, cultural, and economic arrangements. This essay investigates how Zheng Zhenduo (郑振铎 1898–1958) developed a theory of world literature in response to threats to China both politically from without and culturally from within. Centered on an analysis of his 1922 article “A View on the Unification of Literature” (Wenxue de tongyiguan 文學的統一觀), the essay argues that although Zheng believed like many of his contemporaries in the transformative effects of reading world literature in translation, that does not constitute the entirety of his theorization of world literature. The Vsemirnaia Literatura publishing house was founded in Petrograd by Maxim Gorky less than a year after the October Revolution. Aligned with the objectives of the new regime, its mission was to translate and publish a substantial body of European and Asian poetry and prose, thereby contributing to the broad cultural education of the emerging Soviet generations. This paper presents the design, implementation, and some preliminary outcomes of measures aiming at integrating career readiness into the Russian language program at Ohio State University through the creation of a “Russian for the Professions” (RFP) stand-alone M.A. degree. While the M.A. program is still relatively small, its courses serve a larger contingent of students who have achieved or aspire to higher language competency. The key component of the program comprises courses offering specialized language skills in business, cybersecurity, government and foreign affairs, information services, media, and translation. This study aimed to investigate the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) use in improving the quality of education for individuals with disabilities and to identify the obstacles hindering its implementation in public and private special education schools, programs, and centers in Riyadh. The researchers employed descriptive quantitative survey design. The study sample consisted of (325) female teachers who responded to a questionnaire developed specifically for the purposes of this research. The study aimed to identify effective leadership styles that enhance school happiness among male and female teachers in general education schools in Hafr Al-Batin Governorate, adopting a qualitative approach based on grounded theory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 45 teachers, ensuring diversity in educational stage and years of experience, during the first semester of the academic year 1447/2025. The data were analyzed using MAXQDA software following the procedures of open, axial, and selective coding. This study aims to identify knowledge that teachers of students Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have regarding (AI) and to what extent these teachers use it in their educational practices. The study aimed to investigate the role of digital learning in developing creative thinking skills among gifted middle school students from the perspective of parents. The sample included 200 parents, with a mean age of (36.42) years and a standard deviation of (5.52). The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, using both a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that digital learning contributes positively to the development of creative thinking skills. The creative imagination dimension obtained the highest mean score (4.59, SD = 0.58), followed by sensitivity to problems, flexibility, and originality, respectively. This article explains how to build an alumni network and describes the benefits of such initiatives. Echoing the 2024 “Report on English Majors’ Career Preparation and Outcomes” prepared by the ADE Ad Hoc Committee on English Majors’ Career Preparation and Outcomes, it argues that providing students with regular opportunities to hear from and interact with program alumni offers tangible benefits in terms of career preparation. Responding to concerns about the long-term value of foreign language education, this exploratory survey-based study examines how Russian language learners (N = 321) continued to use the language after completing a summer immersion program. The study investigates language use in personal and professional contexts and identifies resources alumni used, recommended, and needed to maintain proficiency. Although opportunities for conversational practice were limited, and interaction in Russian was one of the activities alumni needed but often viewed as unattainable, about 60% of participants continued using Russian at least occasionally. This study aims to examine the concept of e-litigation, its legitimacy, and its effect on judicial justice. To achieve this, the study first defines e-litigation, its origins, its legal basis in Sharīʿah (Islamic law), and the requirements for its implementation. It then highlights the main reasons necessitating recourse to e-litigation as well as its positive and negative implications for the realization of judicial justice. This essay explores the figure of the tragic mulatta in Lydia Maria Child’s The Quadroons and Dion Boucicault’s The Octoroon, analyzing how mixed-race female characters critique the racial and gender hierarchies of 19th-century America. Using an intersectional lens, it examines how race, gender, and class shape the identities and tragic fates of Xarifa and Zoe—women who were socially excluded from both Black and White communities. Foreign language learning anxiety remains a critical affective variable influencing learners’ performance in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This study examined the association between translanguaging as a pedagogical strategy and foreign language anxiety among Saudi university students. Adopting a quantitative descriptive-correlational design, data were collected from 200 undergraduate EFL students using a structured questionnaire. The study aimed to explore the experiences of intellectual education teachers with behavioural problems among adolescent students with intellectual disabilities within intellectual education programmes. The study adopted a qualitative methodology by conducting interviews with a sample of intellectual education teachers in Riyadh city, analysing the data using thematic analysis following the framework proposed by Braun and Clarke. The results revealed that the most common behavioural problems were aggression, hyperactivity, lethargy, and bullying, with an observed increase in their occurrence in the middle of the school day.
