Student Works (2000-2009)

Advancement of technology and globalization pressure cause a lot of companies seek for a better manufacturing technology and operation management. One of the latest management tools that become hot topics to overcome this issue is Supply Chain Management. About 50 years ago, Forrester (1958) introduced a new theory of cross function management, but it was not been given much attention until last 10 years. Supply chain is not something new to the operation management. The differences of Forrester theory is the synergy of all operation management to get a dynamics and better result that is why the word of "management" …

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor Feb 2001

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor

Natural resources published reports

An environmental management system is a tool that many businesses use to improve their environmental performance. Having an environmental management system enables a business to identify and improve management of their significant environmental impacts.

Environmental management systems work to minimise environmental impacts by following a standard 'plan-do-check-improve' management framework. This framework focuses on identifying significant environmental impacts, setting performance targets, establishing means of achieving targets and maintaining sufficient records to show that targets have been reached. Environmental management systems can assist agricultural businesses in:

* improving resource management

* building public confidence in the environmental management of agriculture

* increasing …

Competitive Priorities And Managerial Performance: A Taxonomy Of Small Manufacturers, Ravi Kathuria Sep 2000

Competitive Priorities And Managerial Performance: A Taxonomy Of Small Manufacturers, Ravi Kathuria

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Much of the research in manufacturing strategy has focused on specific relationships between a few constructs, with relatively little emphasis on typologies and taxonomies (Bozarth and McDermott, 1998). Using data from 196 respondents in 98 manufacturing units, this study develops a taxonomy of small manufacturers based on their emphasis on several competitive priorities. The annual sales for sixty-four percent of the participating units in this study are below US $50 million, which is on the lower side as compared to other studies in this area (cf., Miller & Roth, 1994). The study findings indicate that different groups of manufacturers – …

Supply-Chain Synchronization: Lessons From Hyundai Motor Company, Chan K. Hahn, Edward A. Duplaga, Janet L. Hartley Aug 2000

Supply-Chain Synchronization: Lessons From Hyundai Motor Company, Chan K. Hahn, Edward A. Duplaga, Janet L. Hartley

Management Faculty Publications

One of the challenges of supply-chain management is developing ways to effectively integrate activities across organizations on the supply chain. Hyundai Motor Company developed mechanisms to coordinate production planning and scheduling activities among supply-chain members. Hyundai Motor's production-and-sales-control (P/SC) department uses regularly scheduled cross-functional meetings and scheduling policies to coordinate supply-chain activities. When implementing this process, the P/SC department overcame structural, environ mental, and behavioral problems. Although Hyundai manage ment concedes that the process is not perfect, communication among supply-chain members has improved, and the P/SC group has successfully promoted mutual understanding and respect among functional areas. The primary benefit, …

Selecting It Applications In Manufacturing: A Kbs Approach, Ravi Kathuria, Murugan Anandarajan, Magid Igbaria

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The use of the right type of Information Technology (IT) applications or manufacturing systems is expected to usher in a competitive advantage. Selection of the right type of IT application is, however, a challenging task. When a company, with a given dominant process structure, emphasizes two or more competitive priorities, such as quality, product flexibility, etc., an unaided manager faces a complex decision problem in choosing from alternative IT applications available in the areas of product design through distribution. In this paper, we present a Knowledge Based System (KBS) that would assist managers with the identification of IT applications that …

Miscellaneous Publication 37/99 - Codes Of Practice For Vegetable Production On The Swan Coastal Plan, N. Lantzke, A. Galati

Horticulture published reports

Codes of practice contain information on good management practice and set viable limits to inputs such as fertilisers and irrigation, so as to minimise environmental impact. They are written by growers, they need to be regularly updated, and they deal with aspects of horticulture that have environmental and social impact/consequence.

The vegetable industry was worth about $162 million to the State in 1994/95. The Swan Coastal Plain produces over 58 per cent of the State's vegetable production. Western Australia is also the leading State for vegetable exports in Australia. The major crops grown on the coastal plain include potatoes, carrots, …

Extending The Effectiveness Of Service Mapping, John Bicheno, M R Gopalan, V S Mahesh Mar 1999

Extending The Effectiveness Of Service Mapping, John Bicheno, M R Gopalan, V S Mahesh

IIMB Management Review

In most organisations that offer either a service or a product service bundle to the market, much time is spent on resolving an apparent conflict of interests between achievement of external effectiveness and internal efficiencies in the preparation and delivery of service. Bicheno, Gopalan and Mahesh contend that this apparent conflict can be resolved to a great extent if due care is taken in the use of appropriate tools. They review existing service mapping tools and extensions like Information flow, the Kano model and Failsafing which can be successfully used with existing models. They also propose exploratory extensions using the …

Phase Transitions In Project Scheduling, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck Jan 1999

Phase Transitions In Project Scheduling, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Researchers in the area of artificial intelligence have recently shown that many NP-complete problems exhibit phase transitions. Often, problem instances change from being easy to being hard to solve to again being easy to solve when certain of their characteristics are modified. Most often the transitions are sharp, but sometimes they are rather continuous in the order parameters that are characteristic of the system as a whole. To the best of our knowledge, no evidence has been provided so far that similar phase transitions occur in NP-hard scheduling problems. In this paper we report on the existence of phase transitions …

Manufacturing Operations In Europe: Where Do We Go Next?, Arnoud De Meyer Jun 1998

Manufacturing Operations In Europe: Where Do We Go Next?, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Extrapolating from the results of a 10-year INSEAD Survey, the author offers some views on the future for manufacturing in Europe. The model on which the Survey was based indicates that competitive priorities and action plans in manufacturing changed over the 10-year period. Taking lessons from these, the author makes some 'informed guesses' on the future implications for European manufacturers in the form of seven normative features: innovation in the value package; close integration between manufacturing and service; the importance of internationalism; flexible project-based organisation; more integrated management of the value added chain; successful transformation of operational programmes into strategic …

A Framework For Understanding The Impacts Of The Everyday Low Purchase Price Policy In A Supply Chain, Yung-Jae Lee Jan 1998

A Framework For Understanding The Impacts Of The Everyday Low Purchase Price Policy In A Supply Chain, Yung-Jae Lee

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the effect of implementing everyday low purchase price policy (EDLPP) for a manufacturer in consumer non-durable market. In the framework, many .important retailer and consumer behaviors are considered. A major finding of the study is that temporary price discount (a Hi-Lo policy) is generally unprofitable to the manufacturer because the sales increase due to the discount is usually offset by the decreased profit margin and increased total production and inventory related costs. Another important finding is that the retailer plays a critical role as an active middle agent.

Through the sensitivity analysis, we identified the conditions under …

Are Indian Companies Ready For Just-In-Time?, B Mahadevan

IIMB Management Review

The time is ripe to understand what the Indian industry has done to assimilate the Just-in-Time (JIT) philosophy. Practitioners belonging to different sectors of industry would like to know what areas to concentrate on for successful JIT implementation. The study addresses these issues and seeks to bridge the gap between the 'doers' and 'thinkers' of JIT implementation.

Bar Coding And The Construction Industry In Georgia And Alabama, Herbert Marion Barber Jr. Jan 1997

Bar Coding And The Construction Industry In Georgia And Alabama, Herbert Marion Barber Jr.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Effective construction project management relies on data that can be processed into information (Bernold, 1990). Therefore, information on the construction project plays a key role in construction project management (Abudayyeh, 1991). Consequently, information management on the construction project is vital to the success of the construction project (Rasdorf, 1990). Bar coding is one option that can be used in the construction industry as an effective means of managing information (Stukhart, 1987).

The retail and manufacturing industries have used bar coding technology for several years to manage information (Bell, 1988) although the use of bar coding technology to manage information in …

Money Supply, Inflation And The Nigerian Economy, Paul A. Ogwuma Sep 1996

Money Supply, Inflation And The Nigerian Economy, Paul A. Ogwuma

Bullion

Experience in many countries, including Nigeria, show that fiscal policies, in particular, intended primarily to stimulate output growth and enhance real income often end up as a major source of financial imbalances and macro-economic instability. The accompanying high inflation has critical allocative and distributional implications that can be detrimental to the growth process. It is against this background that, this short paper attempts, to identify the relationship between monetary growth and inflationary developments in Nigeria and the implications for economic growth. Following this Introduction, Thus, the challenge of maintaining monetary stability has often been a difficult one, the world over, …

'An Immigrant's Gift': Interviews about the Life and Impact of Dr. Joseph M. Juran

In the latter decades of the 20th Century, there occurred a silent revolution that swept across nations and effected all the peoples of the earth. This quality revolution began in the mind of a humble immigrant to the United States, Joseph M. Juran. His contributions to industry are heralded around the world, and yet his life story has remained unknown until now. An Immigrant's Gift is a compelling and inspirational portrait of a brilliant mind and a great humanist, who, in an unassuming way, had a profound impact on the international business community and our everyday lives.

Running With The Pack: Jit & Automation For Small Manufacturers, Thomas E. Phillips, John R. Ledgerwood

Publications

While both just in time (JIT) concepts and automation programs have been widely implemented and highly successful in large manufacturing companies, many smaller manufacturing companies have wondered whether it would be economically feasible to utilize these same techniques and derive these same benefits. When JIT is adopted by small manufacturers, it provides them with advantages over traditional manufacturing systems, such as lower cost, quality improvements, higher productivity, and less working capital tied up in inventory. Small US manufacturers must understand the basic principles and philosophy of JIT and update their production equipment if they are to be competitive in today's …
