JOHNSON CITY (June 1, 2021) — Dr. Aruna Kilaru, associate professor of biological sciences at East Tennessee State University, and her research team have been working on a new way to combat cardiovascular disease as American’s leading cause of death by studying how to produce more “good,” monounsaturated fats found in plant oils, often used in cooking, and how to make them more abundant for future generations by using plants that are otherwise genetically deficient.

JOHNSON CITY (June 1, 2021) – A group of East Tennessee State University scientists recently published their first COVID-19 related paper emerging from funding awarded to Dr. Zhi Q. Yao by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The paper, titled “Blockage of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-mediated cell–cell fusion using COVID-19 convalescent plasma,” was recently published in Scientific Reports. The funding Yao received from the ADA in 2020 was the university’s first major funding for COVID-19-specific research.

Rochelly Rivera Matos grew up speaking Spanish as her primary language in her hometown of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico.
However, language has not been a significant barrier for her at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. The third-year student pharmacist has immersed herself in student organizations and helped her peers from different cultures and languages adapt to life in East Tennessee.

JOHNSON CITY – In his classrooms and in other supervisory settings, Dr. Mickey White prepares his students at East Tennessee State University to step into the role of a counselor.
He trains them for the types of situations they may face. He provides feedback in the clinical setting. He shares research and best practices, and he leads important exploratory discussions on the complex ethical standards that govern the profession.
Unfortunately, when turning to any research and best practices that specifically address the experiences of LGBTQ counselors, White says the bookshelves are almost bare.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University is preparing to launch two in-demand programs that will expand its footprint in the rehabilitative sciences – a Doctor of Occupational Therapy and a Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics.
ETSU will begin accepting applications for both programs this July, and will welcome the first cohorts of students in May 2022.

After finishing an undergraduate degree at another university, Adam Derrick wasn’t quite sure what they wanted to do next. It was at this crossroad that Adam “stumbled” into the AmeriCorps program.
And from there, the future suddenly became clear.
Adam’s first AmeriCorps assignment was in Austin working with College Forward, an organization that assisted first-generation and low-income students in setting higher education goals and helping them succeed. Adam served as a mentor to these students and loved the experience.

JOHNSON CITY (May 27, 2021) — For almost a decade, groups of East Tennessee State University business student volunteers have offered free tax preparation assistance through the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Nicely, a resident of Atlanta at the time of his death, served as the Reece Museum’s artist-in-residence during the 2014-2015 academic year.
