Raising The Bar: Guideline To Improving Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In Nursing Leadership, Kimako Desvignes

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

The United States is a nation marked by its growing diversity, with ethnically marginalized groups constituting 31% of the population in 2000, 37% in 2012, and projected to reach 50% by 2043 (Carter et al., 2015). In 2018, California had 8,000 registered nurses, with significant ethnic diversity: 40.7% White/Caucasian, 5.5% Black/African American, 11.3% Hispanic/LatinX, 18.7% Filipino, 12.8% Asian/Pacific Islander (excluding Filipino), 3.3% Other, and 7.7% unknown (Spetz et al., 2018). In Los Angeles, the demographics of employed R.N.s were similarly diverse. However, this increase in ethnically marginalized populations presents an ongoing challenge for healthcare organizations, emphasizing the need for sustained …

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford Jan 2024

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The concept of inclusion holds unrealized potential as a guiding framework for supporting employees of all identities in achieving their potential at work and improving organizational diversity. The underdevelopment of the concept’s definition, theoretical foundation, measures, and expected outcomes has hindered its positive impact. For example, scholarly attention has focused primarily on social identity theories to define inclusion at the group level, leaving other identity types and theories underexplored. To help address these issues, Article One of this two-article dissertation synthesizes identity, self-determination theory (SDT), and inclusion literature to provide a theoretical basis for the new identity harmony model of …

How The Human Resource (Hr) Function Adds Strategic Value: A Relational Perspective Of The Hr Function, Jinhwan Jo, Clint Chadwick, Joo Hun Han

Human Resource Management Faculty Publications

In the present article, we propose the concept of the HR function's relational activities and examine its influence on the firm's human capital resources (HCRs) and performance. Integrating insights from various streams of research in strategic human resource management (HRM) and strategic human capital, we develop a relational perspective of the HR function and propose the relational activities as the HR function's advisory and informative activities toward its internal stakeholders (i.e., line managers, employees, and senior managers) to help the stakeholders meet their goals and needs. In our framework, we theorize how the HR function's relational activities lead to superior …

Equity And Inclusion In Honors: A Case Study Of Admissions Changes, Trevor Zink, Andrew Dilts

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Creative levers for change often emerge in times of institutional uncertainty. As higher education continues to confront institutional racism, honors programs can exercise their power to increase diversity and educational outcomes for excluded and marginalized students, as well as influence related university-level policy. This case study chronicles dramatic changes to admissions policies and programmatic offerings in honors between 2020–2023. Changes in admissions practices markedly diversified the student body, moving it from a 60% white population to 60% minority population in just three years. Conversations around race and racism were initiated, inculcating a culture of inclusion rather than elitist exceptionalism. As …

Managerial Coaches’ Enacted Behaviors And The Beliefs That Guide Them: Perspectives From Managers And Their Coachees, Beth Adele, Andrea D. Ellinger

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: Managerial coaching is considered a powerful developmental intervention in the workplace that has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. A growing base of scholarship examining the efficacy of this form of coaching has identified numerous benefits, primarily for employees receiving this form of coaching, and some limited attention has focused on benefits for managers who coach. However, an important topic related to managerial coaching that has gone under-explored is the beliefs that managers have about coaching. Since beliefs often guide behaviors, obtaining a more robust understanding of the beliefs that guide managers who serve as coaches is warranted and …

The number of health care educational institutions/organizations adopting implicit bias training is growing. Our systematic review of 77 studies (published 1 January 2003 through 21 September 2022) investigated how implicit bias training in health care is designed/delivered and whether gaps in knowledge translation compromised the reliability and validity of the training. The primary training target was race/ethnicity (49.3%); trainings commonly lack specificity on addressing implicit prejudice or stereotyping (67.5%). They involved a combination of hands-on and didactic approaches, lasting an average of 343.15 min, often delivered in a single day (53.2%). Trainings also exhibit translational gaps, diverging from current literature …

As influential organizational culture proves to be effective, leadership may come in the form of several styles, including transformational leadership, directive leadership, or empowering leadership, which also play a pivotal role in the success of a group. Ultimately, even though this paper primarily prioritizes the implications of leadership and culture on professional …
