Management And Telework, Arlene J. Nicholas
Management And Telework, Arlene J. Nicholas
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
This chapter discusses telework as a desirable option for workers and a valuable tool for employers to attract and retain employees. Telework's many benefits are appealing to technologically competent and confident workers. Managers may be concerned with employee accessibility, productivity and possible loss of management roles (Arnold, 2006). When Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer banned working from home, it was described as a step backward that countered studies of increased productivity, retention and job satisfaction that could demoralize the workers (Cohan, 2013; Gaudreau, 2013). An overview of benefits, incentives, organizational examples as well as possible deterrents and management resistance are identified.
Looking Beyond The Bottom Line: Connecting The Dots Between Business Enterprise Sustainability Initiatives And Growth In Financial Value, Matthew H. Levin
Looking Beyond The Bottom Line: Connecting The Dots Between Business Enterprise Sustainability Initiatives And Growth In Financial Value, Matthew H. Levin
Student Scholarship
Business enterprises are investing in major sustainability initiatives; yet, often they do not know what are the financial benefits or outcomes of these activities. While managers may have an intuitive sense that “doing well by doing good” does yield financial rewards, they cannot pinpoint the specific effects on financial performance. There is extensive literature that focuses on non-financial measurements of sustainability initiatives. However, relatively little research exists that addresses related financial performance. I conducted a qualitative research study, using grounded theory methodology, to explore the experiences of business managers, advisors, and academicians who have responsibility for providing leadership in their …

The Effects Of Mission Statement Design On Behavioral Intention, Jonathan David West
The Effects Of Mission Statement Design On Behavioral Intention, Jonathan David West
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the length and readability of a mission statement contribute to stakeholder behavior regarding the mission statement. The majority of studies in the mission statement literature have not attempted to find an empirical link between mission statement design and employee behavior. This study employed a 2 (length: long v. short) x 2 (readability: low v high) post-test only factorial design to test the relationship between message design and beliefs about the mission statement. Students at a large southeastern university (n=212) were shown the one of four treatments and asked to …

The Role Of Supervisor Support, Mentorship And Autonomy In Developing The Next Generation Of Leaders, Candace Steele Flippin
Student Scholarship
A lot of attention is being paid to the perceived stark differences in attitudes and behaviors in the workplace among the Baby Boomer, Gen X and Gen Y cohorts from scholars, practitioners, and the popular press. With Baby Boomers rapidly retiring, how can organizations move past the differences and prepare the next generation of supervisors, managers, and other leaders? This study examines factors salient to career success and development Gen X and Gen Y potential leaders. Overall, the results suggest that career commitment is positively associated with supervisor support, mentorship, and autonomy. Autonomy has a positive relationship with both self-efficacy …
Ethnic Diversity Of Boards Of U.S. Companies: Business Sustainability And Group Dynamics, Saajan Sappal
Ethnic Diversity Of Boards Of U.S. Companies: Business Sustainability And Group Dynamics, Saajan Sappal
UROP Posters
Ethnic minorities are significantly underrepresented on the Board of Directors of large US firms. White males comprise nearly twice the proportion of directorships of Fortune 1000 companies as they do the total US population. Ethnic diversity in corporate governance is valued as an asset per two prominent theories: Resource Dependence theory and Agency theory. However, Ethnic diversity on the Board of Directors can also impair the group process per Status theory and constraints such as tokenism and marginalization. This paper is aimed at developing both a theoretical and empirical understanding of the value of ethnic minorities on the Board of …
The Varieties Of Investment Management Law, Harvey Bines, Steve Thel
The Varieties Of Investment Management Law, Harvey Bines, Steve Thel
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
The duty of prudence enunciated by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in 1830 in Amory v. Harvard College has come to stand as a talisman for the duties of investment managers. However, the variety of arrangements that are now used to manage other people’s money could not have been foreseen in 1830. Investment management is now subject to a collection of largely self-contained statutory and common-law systems. Although related in principle, they differ extensively in the investment management activities they affect and in the specific obligations they impose. Now seldom does a single statutory or common- law system cover …

Although the past 2 decades have produced much promise (and accompanying research) on the use of information technology (IT) in business school courses, it is not entirely clear whether IT has truly "transformed" management education. There are compelling arguments on both sides. On one hand, advocates for the transformative role of IT can point to several success stories. On the other hand, skeptics of the role of IT in management education can also point to support for their view. This lack of consensus has led researchers in Academy of Management Learning & Education to call for scholars to confront the …

Patient Portals: Achieving Technology Acceptance And Meaningful Use In Independent Physician-Managed Practices, Kimberly W. Bartholomew
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
As the bulk of medical health records shift from paper-based file systems to electronic formats, the promise of the transformation process called healthcare reform included adding efficiencies to medical practice workflows, lower costs, improved quality of care and most important, and the freeing of patient information from traditional propriety silos. With this incoming largess of protected health information data now viewable through online patient portals, patients can be empowered to become educated and active in their own health care decisions, but only if they have admission to their information. A digital divide currently exists in many medical practices where only …

Who Leads Nonprofit Organizations And What Does It Matter? A Mixed Methods Study Of The Impact Of Different Sector Experience On Nonprofit Leadership, Darrent Robert Tune
Dissertations
The nonprofit sector serves an important economic and community-building role in California and the rest of the United States. However, the nonprofit sector may be facing a leadership deficit due to inadequate succession planning and training of future leaders. Given that nonprofit organizations are often pressured to become more business-like and that many nonprofit organizations may need to adhere to regulations imposed upon them by government funders, nonprofit organizations may be able to find qualified leaders from the for-profit and public sectors.
The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to build on prior research on the sector …
Competencies, Clusters, And Skews In Private Equity: Exploring The Investment Professional Competencies That Distinguish Extreme Outperformance In One Leading Pe Firm, Avi I. Turetsky
Student Scholarship
Using the real world laboratory of one leading private equity (PE) firm, this paper attempts to directly connect professional competencies to performance outcomes, and more specifically, to skewed performance distributions. Though no extant research appears to focus on the shape of PE return distributions, data presented in multiple studies indicates that returns are right skewed at the levels of funds and individual portfolio company investments. At both levels, a small percentage of actors drive an outsized portion of industry returns. This paper finds that within one leading PE firm, this right skew exists at both the levels of individual investments …
The Exploration Of Machiavellianism, Logan Taylor Penticuff
The Exploration Of Machiavellianism, Logan Taylor Penticuff
Online Theses and Dissertations
Dyads, whether in an academic or practical setting, are commonplace. Workforces and academic settings alike are often comprised of groups of two or more individuals working together towards a common goal. As these interactions continue to be prevalent and important in the various settings, the context in which these interactions takes place and the people involved, influence the efficiency of these pairings. More specifically, the realm of business harbors more individuals considered high in a personality trait referred to as Machiavellianism (i.e., Mach) than other common professions. To better understand how Machiavellianism influences commonplace dyads in settings applicable to everyday …

Knowledge Sharing In Multicultural Organizations, Stephen Joseph Mcgrane
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Knowledge management is critical to achieving competitive advantage in the marketplace. The prominence of multicultural organizations also requires an understanding of knowledge-sharing behavior in multicultural teams. In spite of the need to accommodate these new conditions, a gap exists in the research on knowledge sharing in multicultural organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that affect knowledge sharing in a multicultural context. In the research questions I examined the role that culture, monetary rewards, social units, and diversity play in knowledge sharing in a multicultural environment. This study used Hofstede's cultural dimension theory, Sveiby's knowledge-based theory, and …

An Evaluation Of Individuals' Construction Of Personal Trust In Organizations, Colin Edward Armour
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Trust is in decline within organizations resulting from poor management and ethical indifference. Failing to address trust perceptions has led to stress between management and employees. Researchers have studied organizational trust as a constant quality within groups but have neglected the uniquely individual constructs of trust that inhibit trust-building efforts. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate how personal constructs of trust may affect outcomes at the organizational level among workers and managers in hierarchal structured organizations. The topics of the research questions addressed the extent which cultural values and the relative trust situation affected individuals' perceptions of …

The St. Louis School District (SLSD) provided its students with a virtual education program (VEP) but abandoned it following a cut in federal funding, omitting an alternative pathway for students to complete their education. The problem addressed in this study was the effect of technology and management's decision to discontinue the VEP. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine management's role and the effect of the technology in discontinuing the VEP. Dewey's theory of education and Koskela and Howell's theory of management established the theoretical foundation for the study. A purposeful sampling selection approach was used to recruit …
