Natural Disasters’ Effect On Tourism Employment, Caterina Messina May 2022

Natural Disasters’ Effect On Tourism Employment, Caterina Messina

Honors College Theses

Not only do natural disasters cause immediate physical damage to an area, but they often have long-lasting social and economic effects as well. Tourism is a sector of the economy that is relatively fragile and relies heavily on a stable economy. This paper attempts to capture the effect of natural disasters on the tourism industry, specifically tourism employment. This research uses panel data and focuses specifically on 7 metropolitan statistical areas in the United States between 2002-2018. Data collected from the BEA as well as SHELDUS is used in order to quantify this effect. A fixed effects model with a …

Esg Activities, Political Contributions, And Firm Performance, Ahmed W. Alam May 2022

Esg Activities, Political Contributions, And Firm Performance, Ahmed W. Alam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of two distinct empirical papers which I document in two separate chapters. In the first chapter, I empirically examine the impact of banks’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices on banking efficiency. Using a sample of 578 international banks over the years 2011-2019, I employ a data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to estimate banks’ technical efficiency scores. My baseline Tobit regressions reveal that high ESG performance significantly reduces banks’ efficiency. Further, I find that this relationship is non-linear at very high levels of ESG scores. These findings are consistent across the social (S) and governance (G) …

The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha May 2022

The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the lognormality assumption of per capita, real consumption growth, which is a common assumption in asset pricing models. We found that shocks to household consumption growth are persistent, negatively skewed, and have excess kurtosis. Therefore, we revisited the fundamental relation between expected growth and the real risk-free rate, assuming a non-Gaussian distribution of consumption growth, and found a robust positive association between real consumption growth and real risk-free interest rate, and a negative relationship between macroeconomic uncertainty and real rates, although less in magnitude, which is consistent with both intertemporal smoothing and precautionary savings. This paper offers …

The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq May 2022

The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the reintroduction of hard earmarks in the U.S., it is essential to understand the factors that drive earmark receipt. Legislative earmarks have historically represented a significant source of revenue for several firms. We examine the relationship between political expenditure, federal earmarks, and subsequent firm performance. Using a sample of earmarks from 2008-2010 Appropriations bills, we demonstrate that Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions by firms to Senators and Representatives strongly predict both the size and number of earmarks directed to these companies. We also show that PAC contributions to a member of Congress increase the probability that a politician writes …

Predicting And Mitigating Reactance Impact On Attitude And Behavioral Intention, Matthew Ryan May 2022

Predicting And Mitigating Reactance Impact On Attitude And Behavioral Intention, Matthew Ryan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

At times messaging may be of an instructive nature that can be perceived as an attempt to threaten or limit an individual’s freedom. This freedom limitation can range from individual choice to physical requirements. How a message is framed, or positioned, is very important. In certain instances, even when the message has the best intentions, if framed incorrectly can have the opposite, or boomerang, effect on people. This state is known as psychological reactance. When invoked, consumers will act in a way that eliminates the threat of freedom to restore balance. Such a state can also lead to negative implications …

The Challenge Of Competing In The Retail Domain: A Review Of The Complexities, Strategies, And Results Of Capri Holdings Limited, Jenna Terc May 2022

The Challenge Of Competing In The Retail Domain: A Review Of The Complexities, Strategies, And Results Of Capri Holdings Limited, Jenna Terc

Business/Business Administration

The key to competing in the luxury market is adopting a "differentiation strategy." Since the luxury fashion segment is saturated, standing out from the crowd of other luxury retailers can be the key to organizational survival. In this work, I compare and contrast the strategies and qualitative and quantitative performance of Capri Holdings Limited with those of the Ralph Lauren Corp. The strategy to performance evaluation is based on a 5-point Likert Scale and includes more than 40 points of assessment. At the opposite ends of the scale, 1 represented very poor performance and 5 represented that which was very …

A Risk & Return Analysis Of Esg Focused Etfs, Annamarie Khandji

Business/Business Administration

Use of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data about a company or fund in the investment decision making process has increased significantly in the last 15 years. As a result, interest in understanding and analyzing the return potential that funds with high rated ESG scored holdings has grown. This paper examines the return potential ESG focused electronically traded funds (ETF) have, when compared to a conventional ETF and a benchmark. Three funds, including a conventional United States based fund, an ESG focused United States based fund and an ESG focused European based fund as well as the S&P 1500, as …

Pandemic Pivot: An Analysis Of How Retail Pharmacies Diversified Their Offerings During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juliana Hybner

Business/Business Administration

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the operating strategy of nearly all businesses open in 2020. Businesses were split into two groups, essential and nonessential. Nonessential business, like gyms, shopping malls, and movie theaters, had little choice in their strategy in the beginning of the pandemic. They had to close. As they reopened, they found creative ways to attract customers without amassing large crowds in their storefronts. Essential businesses, on the other hand were faced with a unique challenge. Serving the U.S. population during their most vulnerable time. Retail pharmacies took on key responsibilities, administering COVID-19 tests and vaccines, while also …

Exploring Women’S Sizing Chart: A View Into Psychosizing, Patience Billingsley May 2022

Exploring Women’S Sizing Chart: A View Into Psychosizing, Patience Billingsley

Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses

The apparel industry lacks a universal sizing system and has created tactics to group consumers under a few generic sizes. The inconsistency in sizing has led to a struggle of consumers trying to find pieces of clothing that are not only their size but fit their measurements as well. An analysis of the sizing charts of 5 different women’s clothing private labels ranging from sizes 0-16 within two major department stores was assessed. The sizing charts within each individual store were evaluated, and then compared to one another. After calculating the sizing differences, an average of both store A and …

Major League Baseball: The Meaning And Impact Of The Lockout, Derek Mclaughlin

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Major League Baseball’s Collective Bargaining Agreement expired after the 2021 season, which resulted in a lockout. There was an uncertainty of lost games during the lockout. After ninety-nine days an agreement was reached between Major League Baseball and the players’ union. Throughout this research, I explored what would have happened as of a result of lost games. Statistics from previous seasons suggest what could have occurred had there not been an agreement prior to the start of the season, while the new agreement suggest the motivation behind the new agreement.

Analyzation Of Audit Procedures In The Wake Of The Early 2000s Accounting Scandals, Zachary Byar May 2022

Analyzation Of Audit Procedures In The Wake Of The Early 2000s Accounting Scandals, Zachary Byar

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Enron, WorldCom, and Tyco International were companies that operated in different industries and had different levels of net profit for decades. However, these companies had one pivotal thing in common: accounting fraud. In the early 2000s, accounting scandals from large companies created a major impact on the financial markets, causing Congress to take action to increase investor protection through the origination of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The Act was meant to restore investor confidence through strengthened disclosures and auditing requirements for public corporations. However, even with the creation of this new Act from Congress, fraud is still prevalent today, …

How Student Athletes Can Profit From Their Name, Image, And Likeness Rights, Ryan Bartholow May 2022

How Student Athletes Can Profit From Their Name, Image, And Likeness Rights, Ryan Bartholow

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

A new mixture of state laws and NCAA rules have provided athletes with varying degrees of new protections and opportunities to make money by selling their NIL rights (Murphy, 2021). However, these new NIL rights do not come with any sort of guide on how to begin making a profit. According to Christovich (2021), wealthy D-I schools have spent the past year building their NIL programs and hiring consultants to educate their athletes on the new NIL rules. There are many D-II and D-III schools that may not have the finances available to educate their athletes on how to return …

10-Minute Ebd: Charcoal Toothpastes Pose Risks With Few Benefits, Kelly Lemke Dds, Ms May 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Charcoal Toothpastes Pose Risks With Few Benefits, Kelly Lemke Dds, Ms

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The rising popularity of charcoal toothpaste, fueled by social media influencers and claims of teeth-whitening benefits, prompts an investigation into its effectiveness and potential risks. The article explores the evidence through a PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) question focused on patients seeking whiter teeth. A literature review reveals limited scientific validation for the cosmetic or health benefits of charcoal-containing oral products. The abrasiveness of charcoal toothpaste poses risks, potentially leading to enamel loss, dentin exposure, and hypersensitivity. Lack of fluoride in many charcoal toothpaste formulations raises concerns about caries risk. The article emphasizes the importance of dental providers conducting due …

Rock On: The State Of Rock Music Among Generation Z, Gianna Cicchetti May 2022

Rock On: The State Of Rock Music Among Generation Z, Gianna Cicchetti

Honors College Theses

Rock music is a significant part of American culture and has always had ties to the socialization of the youth since its rise in the 1950s. Many musicians and music journalists have pushed forth the opinion that the genre is “dead” as its relevance in young adult culture has faded away in favor of different genres of mainstream music. However, rock artists have seen more success and virality in the past few years. This is primarily true through the social media platform TikTok, the largest platform of its kind with most young people as part of its userbase. The following …

Hospitality Art: A Research Note On The Main Factors Affecting Attractiveness Of Visual Art In Airbnb Settings, Maksim Godovykh, Carissa A. Baker

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The hospitality sector has a long history of creating aesthetic landscapes. Artworks, from paintings and photographs to sculptures and architectural features, have received prominent placement in hospitality spaces. Decades of discussion in the industry and academia exist on art in hotels as well as the aesthetic communication present in a service- scape, or the physical environment of a service landscape that influences image, brand perception, and emotional and cognitive processes (Bitner, 1992; Lin, 2004, 2016; Wakefield & Blodgett, 2016). Art-based initiatives function as a form of value creation that strengthens emotional attachment and relationships with brands (Koronaki, Kyrousi, & Panigyrakis, …

Periodontal Disease And Covid-19, Zhaozhao Chen Dds, Ms, Phd, Laurie K. Mccauley Dds, Ms, Phd, Purnima S. Kumar Bds, Ms, Phd, Hom-Lay Wang Dds, Ms, Phd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

As the gateway to the respiratory system, the oral cavity can play an essential role in SARS-CoV-2 invasion and transmission. Besides high expression of angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the oral cavity can harbor viral particles in saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and the periodontal pocket. Microbial and inflammatory associations closely link periodontitis and COVID-19. In this review, we summarize the possible oral manifestations of COVID‐19, its association with periodontal diseases, the plausible underlying mechanisms of microbial and inflammatory crosstalk between COVID‐19 and periodontal diseases, and mitigation protocols during periodontal treatment.

Volatility Spillovers And Nexus Across Oil, Gold, And Stock European Markets, Chao Ren May 2022

Volatility Spillovers And Nexus Across Oil, Gold, And Stock European Markets, Chao Ren

American Business Review

This paper utilises a trivariate VAR-BEKK-GARCH model to investigate the dynamic relationships between global oil price, gold price, and European stock markets. This paper observes weak return spillover effects from the oil market to 6 European stock markets (Netherlands, Lithuania, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovenia) and from gold to Iceland, while there is no evidence of return spillovers from stock markets to oil and gold. The non-existence of return linkages between gold and stock (oil) suggests that the gold market plays a haven role. With reference to volatility spillovers, the results show obvious asymmetric bidirectional volatility interaction between the …

Economic Freedom, Capital, And Growth: Evidence From The States, Sarah Ihlenfeld, Joshua C. Hall, Yang Zhou May 2022

Economic Freedom, Capital, And Growth: Evidence From The States, Sarah Ihlenfeld, Joshua C. Hall, Yang Zhou

American Business Review

Hall et al. (2010) develop a growth model where the allocation and productivity of human and physical capital depend on the quality of institutions in a country. We apply their model to the US states from 1980 to 2000. Using the Economic Freedom of North America as our measure of institutional quality, we find evidence that increases in human capital lead to increases in output per worker only in states with average EFNA scores above 5.91. Physical capital, unlike in the cross-country case, always has a positive effect on output per worker.

Carry Forward Modeling For High-Frequency Limit-Order Executions: An Emerging Market Perspective, Aritra Pan, Arun Kumar Misra May 2022

Carry Forward Modeling For High-Frequency Limit-Order Executions: An Emerging Market Perspective, Aritra Pan, Arun Kumar Misra

American Business Review

In this study, we estimate the order execution probability of a limit-order book (LOB) and analyze its determinants using high-frequency LOB data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. For this purpose, we propose an algorithm that estimates the LOB execution time. Using a survival function with log-normal distribution, this study analyzes the significant determinants of the limit-order execution times. The average execution probability is found to be higher for stocks belonging to the information technology and telecom sectors. The limit-order execution probability increases with a larger bid–ask spread, lower limit-order size, and deeper opposite order book. On the …

When Failure Is Neither Fatal Nor Final: Understanding Re-Internationalization Processes, Salman Ali, Ajeet N. Mathur May 2022

When Failure Is Neither Fatal Nor Final: Understanding Re-Internationalization Processes, Salman Ali, Ajeet N. Mathur

American Business Review

Re-internationalization, or firms’ re-entry into international operations after completely withdrawing from initial international business failures, is a neglected phenomenon in international business research. This research develops theoretical underpinnings for understanding re-internationalization processes through an inductive theory-building approach using case studies of four Indian firms from diverse industries. We examine various aspects of firms’ initial internationalization, including the learning and experiences gained during such activities, the role of networks and relationships, valences in organizational commitment to internationalization during the exit and time-out periods, and the significance of dynamic capabilities that facilitate successful re-internationalization of firms. Our theorizing is relevant for scholars …
