Overcoming Bias Against Funding Of Female-Led Entrepreneurial Initiatives: The Democratizing Influence Of Online Crowdlending Platforms, Shivendu Pratap Singh, Trina A. Sego, Shikhar Sarin Dec 2022

Overcoming Bias Against Funding Of Female-Led Entrepreneurial Initiatives: The Democratizing Influence Of Online Crowdlending Platforms, Shivendu Pratap Singh, Trina A. Sego, Shikhar Sarin

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Crowdlending platforms are becoming an increasingly prominent alternative funding channel for marginalized entrepreneurs to traditional financing. We examine whether the gender bias generally seen in conventional funding channels extends to the funding of female-led ventures in online platforms and how this potential bias affects service businesses. Our analysis of the KIVA crowdlending platform suggests that while online crowdlending platforms exert a democratizing influence on the funding of female entrepreneurial ventures, female-led service businesses were less able to get financing, mainly for larger loan amounts and longer loan terms. Our findings have significant implications for female entrepreneurs working for marginalized/social causes.

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

A Delaware court has recently recognized the need to enforce contracts that delineate where the attorney-client privilege rests after an asset transfer. This Article will argue that courts across the country should recognize the important and legitimate reasons for this type of decision. Part I will review how the attorney-client privilege functions for corporations and how courts respect the importance of the privilege in other contexts. Part II will review the fundamental corporate changes in which these questions can arise and situations in which courts choose to recognize the importance of protecting the attorney-client privilege. Part III will argue that …

Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

Despite acknowledging crisis, the United States Postal Service (USPS) can remain relevant in the United States by relying on foundational logistical values to guide the implementation of their current supply chain strategies.

The idea of intentional focus dedicated to the advancement of the postal service’s supply chain is an underlying reason why USPS was able to be so successful at its formation. From its founding, the national postal service focused on many logistical values, as the success of executing these values was necessary to the nation's establishment and survival. Three of the most prominent logistical values from creating the national …

This study presents a learning method and challenges regarding implementing a Python programming approach in teaching financial analytics to graduate accounting students. The advent of Big Data, as well as related applications and technologies, has significantly changed the process and practice of accounting. This has led to essential changes in the construction and teaching content of accounting education. While there have been several studies examining how data analytics is embedded in the accounting curriculum, the majority of the teaching cases in accounting focus on analysis and communication with Excel as the principal tool, with very few covering the necessary steps …

Great Recession And Corporate Recovery: Empirical Evidence Of The Impact Of Firms' Internal Control System, Gbolahan Oladayo Dec 2022

Great Recession And Corporate Recovery: Empirical Evidence Of The Impact Of Firms' Internal Control System, Gbolahan Oladayo

Theses and Dissertations

In Previous studies, we are made to understand that recession has a detrimental effect on corporate valves. Hence, I investigate substantial evidence that firms with a good internal control system, even during the financial crisis of 2008, were able to minimize redundancies that could have negatively affected the recovery of their company’s post-recession. Thus, firms with effective internal control systems are able to recover from negative events significantly faster (as measured by the firm’s values) than those without such systems.

Harnessing The Power Within: The Consequences Of Salesperson Moral Identity And The Moderating Role Of Internal Competitive Climate, Omar S. Itani, Nawar N. Chaker

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this research is to examine the notion of salesperson moral identity as a prosocial individual trait and its associated effects on customer and coworker relationships. In addition, this study examines the underlying processes in which these effects occur as well as the moderating role of internal competitive climate. Our empirical investigation of business-to-business (B2B) sales professionals reveals that moral identity has both direct and indirect effects on a salesperson’s customer- and team-directed outcomes. Specifically, our results demonstrate that salesperson moral identity positively affects both salesperson-customer identification and organizational identification, which, in turn, impact customer service provision and …

Plagued by past sexual abuse allegations, scandals, and questionable health, Michael Jackson’s personal finances were purported to be in complete disarray. However, following his unexpected death, the value of his estate, which was reported to be near to nothing, swelled as the world remembered his beloved contributions to the world and began to purchase accordingly. Forecasting Variance Swap Payoffs, Jonathan Dark, Xin Gao, Thijs Van Der Heijden, Federico Nardari Dec 2022

Forecasting Variance Swap Payoffs, Jonathan Dark, Xin Gao, Thijs Van Der Heijden, Federico Nardari

WCBT Faculty Publications

We investigate the predictability of payoffs from selling variance swaps on the S&P500, US 10-year treasuries, gold, and crude oil. In-sample analysis shows that structural breaks are an important feature when modeling payoffs, and hence the ex post variance risk premium. Out-of-sample tests, on the other hand, reveal that structural break models do not improve forecast performance relative to simpler linear (or state invariant) models. We show that a host of variables that had previously been shown to forecast excess returns for the four asset classes, contain predictive power for ex post realizations of the respective variance risk premia as …

Zero-Defect Manufacturing Utilizing Autonomation In Aerospace, Quinton L. Marks, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.

Management Faculty Publications

Multifunctional manufacturing processes are comprised of zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM), which is inherently a complex process because of the simultaneous operations needed to accomplish zero defects. The application of the ZDM philosophy, together with autonomation, presents significant challenges and opportunities for the implementation of new processes that contribute to innovative manufacturing production processes. An emphasis must be on developing fully integrated, operative solutions, employing many quality systems, digitization, data analytics, and industry standards such as AS9100, ISO 9001, and Advanced Product Quality Planning.

Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy: Reasons, Effects, And Outcome, Christian J. Reller Dec 2022

Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy: Reasons, Effects, And Outcome, Christian J. Reller

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy was a major turning point during the 2008 Financial Crisis, and Lehman Brothers itself has become a prime example of regulatory failure since its closing. The demise of Lehman stemmed from the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. The deregulation of investment banking in the 1990s forged the way for new investment practices on Wall Street. The relaxation of rules allowed investment banks to be heavily invested in volatile assets. Lehman’s issues were an extremely high leverage ratio, illiquid assets, and poor corporate governance. An extremely high leverage ratio left Lehman susceptible to large movements in …

Economic Freedom And Labor Market Outcomes Of Immigrants: Evidence From The Dominican Republic And Haiti, Sarah Carvalho, Kathleen Pinkston, Logan Tucker, Corey Denzel

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

When two people receive the same gift and person A initially had significantly less than person B, wouldn’t person A be able to utilize the gift more? Why then do immigrants from Haiti fare so poorly compared to those from the Dominican Republic when exposed to the economic freedom levels of the United States? Using data from the last 30 years, we will be using an OLS model to analyze the impact of economic freedom on the labor market outcomes of immigrants from Haiti compared to those from the Dominican Republic. In this OLS model, we will take into account …

The Effect Of Csr Campaigns On The Consumer Behaviour Of Gen Zers, Aijalyn Gonzales Dec 2022

The Effect Of Csr Campaigns On The Consumer Behaviour Of Gen Zers, Aijalyn Gonzales

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

As consumers become increasingly attuned to the practices of companies and their impact on society and the environment at large, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gradually become a major consideration for marketers. While it is believed that a demographic cohort growing in purchasing power and prominence, Generation Z, is the most sensitive to the perceived-CSR of a brand, some data suggests that their pragmatism and economic considerations may ultimately outweigh their sustainability concerns in a purchase decision.

This research aims to clarify much of the conflicting information about Gen Z’s primary considerations when shopping for products, specifically those in image-related …

Using Foundation Capital For Good: Opportunities In The Balance Sheet, John Sherman, Veronica Olazabal Dec 2022

Using Foundation Capital For Good: Opportunities In The Balance Sheet, John Sherman, Veronica Olazabal

The Foundation Review

Foundations increasingly use their full balance sheets to unlock more of their capital for good. They look beyond conventional grantmaking to pursue their charitable purposes in many ways that exemplify innovative, full-balance sheet approaches: investing in nonprofit and for-profit companies that offer clear social and financial returns; investing their corpus in companies whose products and services align with their missions; using social bonds to inject new resources into their programs; offering guarantees to help grantees manage risk; and avoiding companies whose practices run counter to their grantees’ efforts.

This article looks at the structures, pathways, and tools for foundations wanting …

A Promising Place-Based Collaborative Impact Investing Fund Strengthens Community And Informs Philanthropic Practice, Benjamin Kerman, Clara Miller

The Foundation Review

A recent evaluation of the Western New York Impact Investment Fund adds to the proof-of-concept literature regarding “doing good and doing well” while pointing to experience-based best practices in philanthropic impact investing. Born of a collaboration between regional and national philanthropies, the fund brings together corporate, individual, and philanthropic investors to deliver an inclusive impact investment mechanism. Founded in 2017, the fund evolved from concept to operating entity, focusing on mitigating capital gaps, longterm economic decline, and wealth divides.

Evaluation at Year 5 describes how the professionally managed, collaboratively governed fund has attracted and deployed capital, contributing to ecosystem improvements …

The Field-Building And Grantee Experimentation Role Of Foundations In Impact Investing As Illustrated By A Gender-Lens Investing Case Example, Courtney Bolinson, Laura Allan Dec 2022

The Field-Building And Grantee Experimentation Role Of Foundations In Impact Investing As Illustrated By A Gender-Lens Investing Case Example, Courtney Bolinson, Laura Allan

The Foundation Review

This article argues for foundations to play two critical roles in the impact investing ecosystem: to commission and/or support research that helps build more equitable and socially just impact investing and to fund grantee-specific experimentation in areas of impact investing and social enterprise that are nascent or developing.

To illustrate what this can look like, this article presents action research conducted on gender-lens investing, describing in detail a 2019 Mastercard Foundation grant to Engineers Without Borders Canada. The project involved two main goals: testing and developing gender-lens investing tools and processes with seed-stage investees during pre- or post-investment phases and …

The Ford Foundation’S Work To Build The Field Of Impact Investing, Margot Brandenburg, Abeda Iqbal Dec 2022

The Ford Foundation’S Work To Build The Field Of Impact Investing, Margot Brandenburg, Abeda Iqbal

The Foundation Review

Impact investing has grown dramatically over the past 15 years, with foundations playing a critical role through their program-related and, increasingly, mission-related investments. A smaller number, including the Ford Foundation, have dedicated grant and other programmatic resources toward growing the field. Without this funding, the metrics, engagement, policies, and norms needed to underpin capital markets at scale will be slow to materialize.

This article looks back at the long history of aligning financial investments with social values; touches on the Ford Foundation’s pioneering role in the emergence of PRIs as a tool to stretch grantmaking budgets; and details the impact …

Donor-Advised Funds And Impact Investing: A Practitioner’S View, Sam Marks Dec 2022

Donor-Advised Funds And Impact Investing: A Practitioner’S View, Sam Marks

The Foundation Review

Any discussion of foundations embracing impact investing must include some discussion of one of the largest — and growing — sources of philanthropic capital: donor-advised funds. These philanthropic accounts allow donors of all sizes to access many of the functions of a private foundation, including the potential to invest for impact. Sponsors of these funds, however, face unique challenges in catalyzing impact investments.

Like the larger institutional foundations that have led the way as mission investors, sponsors must often educate and inspire governance boards and investment committees. Unlike foundations with professional program staff, decisions regarding philanthropic resources at sponsors of …
