Resolving Conflicts Through Soft Leadership — An Academic Case Study, M S. Rao
Resolving Conflicts Through Soft Leadership — An Academic Case Study, M S. Rao
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The purpose is to present a case study on soft leadership to resolve conflict effectively. It adopts the 11 Cs of Professor M.S. Rao, the father of “soft leadership” — character, charisma, conscience, conviction, courage, communication, compassion, commitment, consistency, consideration, and contribution. It draws a blueprint to resolve conflicts amicably. It emphasizes that leaders have to act according to the situation, with more emphasis on soft leadership, for resolving conflicts to achieve a win-win outcome. It describes how to redress grievance in a private Indian educational institution through soft leadership. It offers practical ideas and innovative tools and techniques to …

Subtle Leadership: When Referent Power Is Subtly Powerful, Luz E. Quiñones-González
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The following research presents the construct of “subtle leadership” in a conceptual discussion as a new way of perceiving and studying leaders of the twenty-first century. Its core objective points toward the conceptualization of “subtle leadership,” sharing a basic definition to provoke discussion and emerging theoretical framework in order to better understand the current organizational reality. Some leadership styles such as servant leadership, shared leadership, and authentic leadership are discussed to compare and contrast them with “subtle leadership,” emphasizing that leadership is viewed as a process and not only as styles or personal traits. Subtle leadership is primarily based on …
Can An Old Theory Help Solve A Contemporary Labor Crisis? Applying Jcm To The Current Labor Shortage, Jeff Cohu
Can An Old Theory Help Solve A Contemporary Labor Crisis? Applying Jcm To The Current Labor Shortage, Jeff Cohu
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article asserts that the answer to our current labor crisis may not be as challenging as it appears if management will apply an old theory (Job Characteristics Model) to our contemporary workforce challenges. The article illustrates the key dimensions of the model and provides specific leadership recommendations for applying the JCM model to our current employment environment. Finally, the article also asserts that a new employee-centric style of leadership that requires a shift in leadership values and mindset is necessary to address the labor shortage and that JCM is a useful tool to facilitate that transition.

Leading With Passion – What It Means, Why It Matters, Cam Caldwell, Comfort O. Okpala
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This ability to care, or to lead with passion, has increasingly been identified as a quality of today’s leaders and has been cited as an essential condition precedent for successful organizations (Duckworth, 2018; Love, 2012; Collins, 2001). Understanding the role of passion in in building strong relationships has practical benefits for both leaders and followers. The focus of this paper was to identify key elements of passion that contribute to effective leadership and to explain why leading with passion is so important in today’s highly competitive business climate. The authors provided eight elements or qualities that are critical to leading …

The Frayed Edges Of Morals And Values: Seeking Balance In A World Of Value Diversity, Joseph P. Hester
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
An examination of stakeholder perspective upon the closure of their company. One such view was contemplated through “the five lenses through which to view ethics that he had been taught in b-school: fairness & justice, utilitarian, rights, community good, and virtue. Arguments could be made for the application of several of these perspectives in this situation.” The lasting thought is whether an ethical imperative of competency is required to running a lasting business.

Republicans In Congress Today: Against Everything And For What?, Ritch K. Eich
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
In April, 2022, the US House of Representatives passed a nonbinding, bipartisan resolution reaffirming its unequivocal support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as an alliance founded on democratic principles. However, in a recent nonbinding vote, 63 House Republicans shamefully refused to support the alliance. And it's questionable they will back democracy when our nation calls for their support.

Institutional differences between countries influence strategic choices and performance of international businesses, but the unintended effects of legal institutions on firm legitimacy have received less attention. We argue that, while minority shareholder rights protection in an investment location does not directly protect shareholder interests abroad, the normative and mimetic effects it has on host country managers can mitigate agency problems. Using Japanese FDI established between 1986 and 2013 we find that (a) subsidiaries established in host countries with higher shareholder rights protection employ a smaller proportion of Japanese expatriates, (b) shareholder rights protection enhances a country’s FDI attractiveness, and (c) …

Estimating The Effect Of Poker Room Promotions On Player Traffic, Michael T. Paz, Mikhail M. Sher, B D. Mccullough, Shabnam Zarin
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
This paper examines the impact of poker room promotions on player traffic in casino-based poker rooms. Casinos regularly spend significant portions of their marketing budget on promotions, including free-play, item-based offers, complementary hotel rooms, and travel reimbursements (among others), in an effort to drive casino traffic. Poker room promotions, by contrast, are unique within the context of casino promotions because they are both player-funded and paid in cash. Despite these significant differences between poker room and other casino promotions, prior research has not provided empirical evidence on the effectiveness of poker room promotions. Using collected data on casino-based poker games …

Michigan Case Puts Chink In Higher Education Admission Standards, Albert D. Clark
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
This paper examines the recent April 2014 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the state of Michigan’s constitutional amendment banning the use of race as an affirmative action tool in selecting admissions to the state’s public universities. The 6-2 ruling in the case of Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action has been hailed by some as a major step in the unraveling of the policy of Affirmative Action on a permanent basis.

“Institutional Theory Of Green Marketing Strategies In A Workplace Environment, Jamie Pleasant
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
This paper offers a strategic look at the importance of institutional theory and its impact in the timing, marketing, acceptance and implementation of “green strategies” in an office environment. There are various environmental factors that must be examined and managed in the entire change process of an organization in order that long-term sustainable competitive advantages are experienced within and external of a firm and its adopted paradigm. Additionally, various types of isomorphism is also presented as effective practices for an organization to implement in order to achieve homogeneity during the change process in its attempt to market and create a …
Do Incentives For Reit Executives Improve Efficiency?, Danielle Lewis, Dek Terrell
Do Incentives For Reit Executives Improve Efficiency?, Danielle Lewis, Dek Terrell
Southern University College of Business E-Journal
Using 1998-2005 EXECUCOMP data on Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) CEOs, this study addresses some of the issues that arise when modeling CEO incentive-based compensation. The purpose is to investigate how profit efficiencies are impacted by CEO compensation and their composition of pay packages. Since a disproportionate amount of a REITs expenses are executive compensation related, this issue is particularly important. Much of the literature focuses on estimating the impact of firm and CEO characteristics on CEO compensation. We consider the more direct question of whether total CEO compensation or the mix of compensation affects profit efficiency.
Active Consideration Of Future Health Can Be Prompted By Simple Health Messages And Improves Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Christopher R. Gustafson
Active Consideration Of Future Health Can Be Prompted By Simple Health Messages And Improves Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Christopher R. Gustafson
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Many choices that people face daily have implications for future health and well-being. Choices about what foods to purchase and consume are one of the most frequent—and universal choices—that people must make. The ongoing rise of overweight and obesity rates—and associated diet-related diseases—in the US and many other countries illustrates the future health consequences of low-quality dietary choices. While a large body of research shows that individuals with a tendency to consider the future make a wide range of healthier decisions, research on limited attention and exogenous factors influencing choice suggests that attention to the future consequences of choices may …

Food Insecurity In An Anthropogenic Age: An Analysis Into How Consumer Demand Will Shift During Crisis Events, Chloe G. Parsons, Christina Kuchmaner
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Consumers in the United States may need to adjust their food demand due to food insecurity caused by climate warming events. Research has focused on how climate change impacts food supply chains and distribution; however, there was little research on how consumers responded to these changes. This study analyzed how consumers across the United States responded to food insecurity caused by crisis events (i.e. pandemics and climate change), how consumers shifted from grocery store vendors to local food vendors, and if migration or food miles may increase based on potential food shortages. One study was initiated through survey and a …

In 2021, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute reported that “Utah ranks as the 34th most racially and ethnically diverse state in the nation, with 22% of the state identifying as other than non-Hispanic White.”1 As the state continues to become more diverse, it is critical that the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) conducts and reports research focused on women of color. As the UWLP focuses on strengthening the impact of all Utah girls and women, research that increases our understanding of the status and experiences of girls and women within all social and identity groups—including race and …

We study shifts in the ideal worker culture as experienced by working mothers across organizations in the United States during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the experiences of 53 interviewees in how they attended to increased responsibilities across both work and family domains, we saw an entrenchment of the ideal worker culture across nearly all organizations and professions. This manifested in three levels, as (1) a reinforced ideal worker culture in the workplace through work-intensification, increased competitiveness, and surface-level support; (2) the reinforcing of organizations’ ideal worker norms at home, with gendered division of space and labor, and (3) experienced …
The Farm And Ranch Hired Labor Market, Larry Van Tassell
The Farm And Ranch Hired Labor Market, Larry Van Tassell
Cornhusker Economics
The historical causality between increased agricultural mechanization and reduction in farm labor is a well-known relationship. The reduction in both family and hired farmworkers on U.S. farms from 1950 to 2000 is presented in Figure 1. In 1950, the nearly 10 million farm labor force was composed of 23.5% hired farm workers. In 2000, the last year this data was available, farm labor had reduced to 3.19 million workers and was comprised of 35.4% of those workers being hired. The reduction in total farm workers and the trend of reduced farm labor and a relative increase in hired farm labor …
