A Survey Of Investing And Retirement Knowledge And Preferences Of Florida Preservice Teachers, Richard Thripp Jan 2019

A Survey Of Investing And Retirement Knowledge And Preferences Of Florida Preservice Teachers, Richard Thripp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New teachers are facing lower pay and less generous retirement benefits than the prior generation, yet their financial and retirement knowledge, concerns, and preferences have received little attention. To investigate these areas, the author developed a 39-item survey instrument and administered it to 314 preservice teachers in undergraduate teacher education courses at the University of Central Florida, who were primarily female elementary and early childhood education juniors and seniors ages 18–25. Florida public employees are offered an unusual choice between a traditional pension plan and a defined-contribution plan similar to a 401(k) in which they can select their own investments, …

Innovation in technology has been growing rapidly in recent years. Many restaurants have been utilizing different types of self-service technologies (SSTs) to enhance their operations and customer satisfaction. Despite, the rapid spread of SSTs in the restaurant industry, very limited empirical research has been conducted to evaluate the influence of SSTs type on customer dining experience. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to examine the SSTs values that influence restaurant customers' satisfaction and their decision to continue to reuse SSTs. More specifically, this study utilized the Theory of Consumption Values (TCV) to examine consumers' perception of the SST values …

Are Filipino Smokers More Sensitive To Cigarette Prices Due To The Sin Tax Reform Law?: A Difference-In-Difference Analysis, Myrna S. Austria, Jesson A. Pagaduan Jan 2019

Are Filipino Smokers More Sensitive To Cigarette Prices Due To The Sin Tax Reform Law?: A Difference-In-Difference Analysis, Myrna S. Austria, Jesson A. Pagaduan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Employing a two-part estimation model using the Family Income Expenditure Survey before (2009) and after (2015) the tax reform, our study assessed the impact of the Philippine Sin Tax Reform Act (2012) on cigarette consumption and the responsiveness of cigarette consumption to price changes. The results are consistent with existing studies that cigarette consumption is price inelastic. The demand, however, has become less inelastic in the Philippines over the period 2009 to 2015, indicating a more responsive cigarette demand to price increases. Of the total effect of cigarette price increase on demand, the decrease in consumption by smokers (smoking intensity) …

The Role Of Fiscal Policy In A Natural Disaster-Prone Economy, Dickson Lim Jan 2019

The Role Of Fiscal Policy In A Natural Disaster-Prone Economy, Dickson Lim

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Theoretical work done on the macroeconomic impact of natural disasters has neglected the role of fiscal policy in stabilizing other sectors of the economy. Although inclusion of a public sector with a fiscal authority in macroeconomic models is common in the literature, most of these models assume that government expenditures are unproductive in that they do not accrue to anyone but the government. In reality, for a model that incorporates natural disaster and foreign aid, having a productive fiscal authority that produces public goods and services, as well as infrastructure, is necessary to capture the real effects of foreign aid …

Deep Habits And Taxes: A Simulation Study, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy Jan 2019

Deep Habits And Taxes: A Simulation Study, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Using a calibrated dynamic model that embeds endogenous fiscal policy tools, this note provides simulation evidence on the effectiveness of tax and fiscal spending policies in determining key macroeconomic outcomes. The model was chosen because newly imposed taxes in the Philippines have affected the prices of consumption varieties and plausibly because of deep habits, the pricing policies of firms have become dynamic. Building upon the seminal model of Ravn, Schmitt-Grohe, and Uribe (2006), this note shows that preference structures do have a key role to play in determining the response of private consumption to endogenous fiscal policy. Results show that …

Can Government Bond Replace Rational Bubbles? The Empirical Investigation On Singapore And Thailand, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Pichet Kaytanyaluk Jan 2019

Can Government Bond Replace Rational Bubbles? The Empirical Investigation On Singapore And Thailand, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Pichet Kaytanyaluk

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper aims to test the theoretical policy implication on rational bubbles. Many works, including Caballero and Krishnamurthy (2006), Kocherlakota (2009), and Martin and Ventura (2011), suggested that government bonds can rule out rational bubbles. We constructed our own bubble index using the Fourier transformation technique and, as a result, found the empirical support of the theory in the case of Singapore, but not in the case of Thailand. For the case of Singapore, the credibility in an ability to collect tax and the appropriate yield of government bonds are keys to the effectiveness of such the anti-bubble policy. Moreover, …

How Does Value Relevance Of Accounting Information React To Financial Crisis?, Karl Louis Eugenio, Rhobe Mitch Ailarie Parel, Katrina Marie Reyes, Keith Brian Yu, Cynthia Cudia Jan 2019

How Does Value Relevance Of Accounting Information React To Financial Crisis?, Karl Louis Eugenio, Rhobe Mitch Ailarie Parel, Katrina Marie Reyes, Keith Brian Yu, Cynthia Cudia

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The relevance of financial reports rests on the value relevance of accounting information. Since accounting information is value relevant only when used by investors to reflect stock valuations, it takes trust from the users of financial information over the financial statements. The heightened volatility of markets during periods of financial distress or crisis raises the imperative to determine the value of financial information during these periods. The great recession of 2008 also victimized East Asia, and firm strategies were influenced by resulting economic shocks. In this study, we aim to determine how value relevance of accounting information differ before, during, …

Anticipating Aging And Prospecting Pension For Retirement Well-Being, Roberto E. Javier Jr., Mitzie Irene Conchada, Melvin Jabar Jan 2019

Anticipating Aging And Prospecting Pension For Retirement Well-Being, Roberto E. Javier Jr., Mitzie Irene Conchada, Melvin Jabar

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Filipino young and middle-aged adults anticipate old age positively as it is a mark of achievement in human life but negatively apprehend living through their old age, given the high incidence of poverty among the elderly in the Philippines. The issues surrounding the insurance system, income security, and social pension in old age were all related to unfavorable views about living through the aging years. In-depth group interviews (IGIs) conducted across cities and municipalities in the countryside generated conceptions about aging and concerns about becoming old in a society with no strong social protection for its graying population. A qualitative …

Assessing The Poverty And Distributional Impact Of Alternative Rice Policies In The Philippines, Caesar B. Cororaton, Krista Danielle S. Yu Jan 2019

Assessing The Poverty And Distributional Impact Of Alternative Rice Policies In The Philippines, Caesar B. Cororaton, Krista Danielle S. Yu

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Philippine domestic prices of rice are significantly higher than world prices for similar rice quality. The WTO- approved Philippine rice waiver, which allows the government to continue its quantitative restrictions on rice imports, sustains

the price gap in rice and prolongs the heavy burden on poor consumers who spend a significant amount of their income on rice. The results of rice policy simulations using a CGE model with poverty microsimulation indicate that a tariffication of the quantitative restrictions on rice imports, which maintains the level of protection to the local paddy farmers and the utilization of the generated revenue as …

Bridging The Gap Between Public Opinion Research And Consumer Marketing Research: Insights Into U.S. Shoppers Of Organic Foods, Marilena O. Vilceanu, Olivia Grasso, Kristine Johnson Jan 2019

Bridging The Gap Between Public Opinion Research And Consumer Marketing Research: Insights Into U.S. Shoppers Of Organic Foods, Marilena O. Vilceanu, Olivia Grasso, Kristine Johnson

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The primary goal of this study embraces Hughner and team’s (2007) directive to focus new research on the growing segment of occasional consumers of organic and natural foods, rather than limit the search for consumer insights to the small, elitist groups of deeply committed consumers. Research questions address the demographics, attitudinal, and behavioral characteristics that identify organic foods as a premium product. Primary recommendations for marketing practitioners include focusing on higher income consumers, especially married individuals, who live in highly populated areas; creating a pleasant shopping experience; promoting non-food related organic items, and investing in brand presence and salience.

“Not So Fast! Let’S Find Your Optimal Delivery Time!”: The Impact Of Delivery Time On Retailer Profit In A Heterogeneous Market, Saman Modiri, Scott Fay Jan 2019

“Not So Fast! Let’S Find Your Optimal Delivery Time!”: The Impact Of Delivery Time On Retailer Profit In A Heterogeneous Market, Saman Modiri, Scott Fay

AMTP Proceedings 2019

In order to make online shopping more attractive to consumers, many retailers have endeavored to reduce the time between when an order is placed and when it is received. The cost of delivery and logistical challenges are obvious impediments to faster delivery. In this paper, we examine how other factors, including the presence of physical channels and consumer heterogeneity (in shopping preferences and product valuations), impact the optimal delivery time. To isolate the effects of these alternative factors, we ask whether faster delivery is always profitable even if it is costless to the firm and if there is no logistical …

Analyzing True Loyalty In The Middle Eastern Market: Brand Preference And Brand Insistence, Larry P. Pleshko, Richard A. Heiens Jan 2019

Analyzing True Loyalty In The Middle Eastern Market: Brand Preference And Brand Insistence, Larry P. Pleshko, Richard A. Heiens

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The purpose of this study was to investigate loyalty profiles in among consumers of western-style coffee shops within the emerging market of Kuwait. The loyalty profiles were developed based on the typology presented by Dick & Basu (1994), where buyers can be truly loyal, spuriously loyal, latently loyal, or not loyal to a specific brand. Added to these four loyalty types are the inclusion of two specific true loyalty categories, preferent true loyalty and insistent true loyalty. The study presents evidence that a large proportion of customers fall into the true loyalty category. However, only about five percent of the …

Is Marketing Science Really Scientific?, Michael Latta, Ismet Anitsal, Michael Mccall, Stephen A. Lemay

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Thirty-five years ago, there was a special issue of the Journal of Marketing in Fall, 1983 concerning whether marketing is a science and what role theory plays in a marketing science. In that issue the following articles concerned with the definition of Marketing and its role in business appeared:

  • Shelby Hunt asked the question of whether a general theory of marketing is even possible and what such a theory would be like if such a theory existed.
  • Robert Bartels noted that marketing has been defined as having theory and practice, specialization and generalization, as well as established interests and global …

I Will Like Your Product, But First Let Me Take A Selfie, Patrick A. Barbro Jan 2019

I Will Like Your Product, But First Let Me Take A Selfie, Patrick A. Barbro

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Through the proliferation of smartphones, social media, photo sharing, and selfies, the way consumers have become used to seeing themselves has changed. This paper aims to examine the influence of image type and consumer selfie taking on image and product evaluation. More specifically, this research seeks to address the question: how does a consumer’s exposure to their own image influence their evaluation of products and self-images? The selfie phenomenon and its effect on how consumers evaluate images likely play a key role.

Through three experiments, this research examines the influence of image type and consumer selfie taking on image and …

Pleasure And Pain: The Role Of Anticipated Pleasure On Time Of Consumption And Pain Of Payment, Patricia T. Gouveia, Michelle Van Solt, Alexandra Rodriguez-Aguirre Jan 2019

Pleasure And Pain: The Role Of Anticipated Pleasure On Time Of Consumption And Pain Of Payment, Patricia T. Gouveia, Michelle Van Solt, Alexandra Rodriguez-Aguirre

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The pain consumers feel when paying for a product or service tends to vary depending on the mode of payment (Knutson et al. 2007; Roberts and Jones 2001; Thomas, Desai, and Seenivasan 2011; Zellermayer 1997). For instance, it has been demonstrated that the use of cards as a mode of payment, compared to the use of cash, can decrease significantly the pain of paying for products and services. Although there is plenty of research in the literature on the pain of payment, less is known about the role that pleasure plays in consumer consumption.

The focus of this research is …

Framework For The National Culture And User Engagement In Social Media, Ilia Gugenishvili Jan 2019

Framework For The National Culture And User Engagement In Social Media, Ilia Gugenishvili

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Even though social media engagement provides numerous benefits, companies’ efforts to engage users are often unsuccessful. Despite the growing interest of scholars and practitioners, studies on engagement have been predominantly exploratory in nature. Addressing this identified literature gap this conceptual article proposes a framework, which connects the national culture to social media engagement. It synthesizes the theory of culture; reception, motivation-opportunity-ability (MOA); social identity; self-concept; and social impact theory. User attitudes act as a mediator, while individual, group and motivational variables might work as cultural amplifiers or attenuators. Situational characteristics can cause a change in the relevance of the variables …

The Geography Of Csr, David K. Ding, Christo Ferreira, Udomsak Wongchoti Jan 2019

The Geography Of Csr, David K. Ding, Christo Ferreira, Udomsak Wongchoti

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We regress socio-economic indicators against firm level CSR scores using a sample of over 26,000 firm year observations from 1991 through 2009. We find that a firm's CSR profile is linked to the socio-economic conditions of the firm's geographic headquarters (HQ) location. The study documents that the legal, cultural, economic, and demographic differences across geography significantly explain the variation in CSR means between metropolitan statistical areas, states, and regions. We also find that the relation between CSR and firm performance is conditional on socio-economic factors, which highlight the endogeneity concerns inherent in CSR studies. Lastly, we show that firms that …

Building A Sustainable Business Model Through Technology Entrepreneurship: An Analysis Of Business Models From A System And A System Of Systems Perspective, Gary Langford, Teresa Langford

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Case study methods are used to identify key elements of business models in highly competitive environments. Small businesses, in particular, must rely on entrepreneurial prowess and innovation, adapt to their environment, have sufficient resources, and skillfully manage project outcomes in entrepreneurial start-up situations. This research hypothesized that a problem faced by entrepreneurial organizations is due to the fundamental flaws and poor adaptability of their business models to satisfy needs of customers and prospective customers. The problem is that the flow of value from business to customer was different from the flow of value from business to user. Two kinds of …

Using The Hierarchical Decision Model (Hdm) To Select A Sustainable Voice Over Internet Protocol (Voip) Provider, Fayez Alsoubaie

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The continued technological progression has instituted a modification in communication facets. Consequently, the use of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has enhanced and technical researchers believe that this innovation will be at the center stage for future phone engagements. VoIP services are offered by different providers depending on the customer's unique personal or corporate requirement. Therefore, firms should undertake extensive researches to determine the most appropriate service providers that would optimize operations and improve productivity. In most cases, the choice of VoIP in a hierarchical organization is influenced by factors such as the number of users within various protocols, …

Impact Of Agreeableness On Virtual Team Performance Through Team Identification And Shared Mental Models, Alexandria Brown Jan 2019

Impact Of Agreeableness On Virtual Team Performance Through Team Identification And Shared Mental Models, Alexandria Brown

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Virtual teams help organizations efficiently utilize their employees for a task without the requirement of co-location. The literature on team performance suggests that teamwork is integral to a team’s success; however, in virtual teams this is often a challenge. Certain personality characteristics on virtual teams may be particularly important to the development of effective teamwork. An under-investigated factor is the role agreeableness in virtual team processes and how it affects the overall team performance. The main research question of this study is how the degree of agreeableness on a virtual team affects the overall team performance through predicted associations with …

How Fitting In To The Social Context Influences Work-Life Balance Effectiveness And Work Performance, Amanda Lynn Conlin Jan 2019

How Fitting In To The Social Context Influences Work-Life Balance Effectiveness And Work Performance, Amanda Lynn Conlin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the notion that what may matter most in achieving an authentic feeling of work-life balance is fit within the immediate social context among work teams. Both work-life balance effectiveness and work performance depend on managing and meeting others’ expectations. Thus, the extent to which an individual shares work-life balance values and preferences with others on their team (i.e., a form of person-team fit influences the amount of resources expended or gained from navigating and negotiating others’ expectations. In a field study, 106 full time employees at a commercial real estate company were surveyed measuring the extent to …

A Multimethod Investigation Of Emotional Labor And Sleep Quality: Can Perceptions Of Sleep Quality Influence Health And Emotion Regulation?, Arielle P. Rogers Jan 2019

A Multimethod Investigation Of Emotional Labor And Sleep Quality: Can Perceptions Of Sleep Quality Influence Health And Emotion Regulation?, Arielle P. Rogers

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Sleep and emotional labor (i.e., emotion regulation at work) are integral to health and job performance. Poor sleep quality has been linked to decreased emotional labor; however, no study has examined the reason for this relationship. This study draws from models of self-regulation to suggest that perceptions of good sleep quality can increase employees’ motivation to exert emotional labor in the absence of display rules (i.e., “display autonomy”), resulting in better emotion performance (i.e., coded affective displays) and health (i.e., decreased emotional exhaustion). College students (N = 205) were randomly assigned to a “display rules” or “display autonomy” condition and …
