Organizational Culture And Ethical Decision-Making During Major Crises, William E. Mumley Jul 2019

Organizational Culture And Ethical Decision-Making During Major Crises, William E. Mumley

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

By integrating various behavioral and ethical theories, such as Organizational Culture and the Social Construction of Knowledge, this research argues that emergency micro-cultures often emerge in times of crisis. Smaller, localized environments, permeated by this crisis culture, often produce an ethical myopia that corrupts wise decision-making. Unless insiders, either leaders or followers within a local setting, are able to meaningfully access ethical frames of reference existing outside the immediate context of the crisis culture, choices remain highly influenced by misaligned values distorted by proximate and introspective survival priorities with minimal regard for external or long-term ethical consequences. In this regard, …

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Abstract

Health and wellbeing of employees has a direct correlation to organizational performance. It is essential that organizations and successful leaders prioritize the health and wellbeing of all employees – from the C-suite to entry level positions. As rates of stress, chronic illness, and unhealthy lifestyle choices continue to increase, it is imperative that organizations discover strategies that cultivate employee wellbeing. Employees with high wellbeing are more engaged, productive, and energized and directly affect a company’s bottom line; it is in the best interest of employers to invest in human capital and wellbeing of employees. Rebuilding Of The Temple And Renewal Of Hope: Leadership Lessons From Zerubbabel, Ezra, And Nehemiah, Hershey H. Friedman, Paul J. Herskovitz Jul 2019

Rebuilding Of The Temple And Renewal Of Hope: Leadership Lessons From Zerubbabel, Ezra, And Nehemiah, Hershey H. Friedman, Paul J. Herskovitz

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The past three decades have been witness to a nascent but compelling body of literature on lessons in leadership for business derived from biblical narratives. The aim of this paper is to advance that effort. Specifically, this study considers the leadership of Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, who built the Second Temple on the ruins of the First. When he arrived in Judah from Babylonia, the walls of Jerusalem were breached and the entire country was filled with people hostile to constructing the Temple. One of the mysteries of the Bible is the disappearance of Zerubbabel from the biblical record. …

An Examination Of Computer Forensics And Related Certifications In The Accounting Curriculum, Michael A. Seda, Bonita Peterson Kramer, D. Larry Crumbley Jul 2019

An Examination Of Computer Forensics And Related Certifications In The Accounting Curriculum, Michael A. Seda, Bonita Peterson Kramer, D. Larry Crumbley

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Forensic accounting has been a fast-growing niche area within the accounting field for many years. While there has been dramatic growth in the number of courses and degrees in forensic accounting offered by universities, certain relevant topics receive little coverage, such as computer forensics. The purpose of this paper is to examine the views of accounting academics and practitioners pertaining to integrating computer forensics in the accounting curriculum, as well as to determine which forensic accounting certifications the respondents hold. Differences in opinions between the two groups are discussed, along with recommendations on how to improve the forensic accounting curriculum …

Hedge Fund Ownership And Auditor-Client Contracting In U.S. Firms, Sarah Feltus Jul 2019

Hedge Fund Ownership And Auditor-Client Contracting In U.S. Firms, Sarah Feltus

PhD in Business Administration Dissertations

Hedge funds have grown rapidly in the last two decades, from managing assets worth approximately $600 billion in 2003 to over $3 trillion in 2017. As hedge funds themselves have grown, so too have concerns about their involvement with publicly traded companies and their effect on various stakeholders and the economy. Although Critics claim that hedge fund activism creates a short-term focus, shifting funds out of expansion and research and development and into distributions to shareholders, proponents argue that hedge fund activism helps boards overcome management incompetence and counter passive investors. Academic research is mixed on the long-term effects of …

Supply Chain Opportunity Costs About To Explode, Michael Gravier

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

The cost of tariffs gets a lot of popular media attention, but it’s a shallow treatment of a complex disease. Yesterday Bloomberg ran a piece titled, “The Age of Global Supply Chains Is in Trouble,” about the worrying impact of export restrictions on global supply chains.

The Negative Impact Of Positive Stereotyping: Relationship Between Positive Stereotypes, Perceived Competence And Perceived Potential For Leadership, Megan Chan Jul 2019

The Negative Impact Of Positive Stereotyping: Relationship Between Positive Stereotypes, Perceived Competence And Perceived Potential For Leadership, Megan Chan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

For many years, Asian Americans have been positively stereotyped as the most successful racial group in America. Yet, very few Asian Americans occupy top leadership positions. This research investigates how positive stereotyping affects managers’ perception towards Asian Americans’ level of competence and potential for leadership. I conducted a scenario study with a sample of 315 people working and residing in the United States. These participants assumed the role of decisions makers and were presented with information about job applicants where the variable data (i.e. race) was manipulated. Based on the differences in ratings on Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans, I …

Claus O. Wilke has authored an excellent reference about producing and understanding static figures, figures used online, in print, and for presentations. His book is neither a statistics nor programming text, but familiarity with basic statistical concepts is helpful. Written in three parts, the book presents both the math and artistic design aspects of telling a story through figures. Wilke makes extensive use of examples, labels them good, bad, …

Multi-Study Analysis Of Learning Culture, Human Capital And Operational Performance In Supply Chain Management: The Moderating Role Of Workforce Level, Robert E. Overstreet, Joseph B. Skipper, Joseph R. Huscroft Jr., Matt J. Cherry, Andrew L. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Purpose — The purpose of this study is to empirically evaluate the relationship between learning culture, workforce level, human capital and operational performance in two diverse supply chain populations, aircraft maintenance and logistics readiness. Design/methodology/approach — Drawing upon competence-based view of the firm and human capital theory, this paper analyzes data from two studies. Findings — The results provide support for the hypothesized model. Workforce level moderates the relationship between learning culture and human capital, and human capital partially mediates the relationship between learning culture and operational performance. Research limitations/implications — The findings have implications for behavioral supply chain management …

Culture Inside The Firm And Its Effect On Collaboration Within The Supply Chain Industry, James Bailey Morris Jul 2019

Culture Inside The Firm And Its Effect On Collaboration Within The Supply Chain Industry, James Bailey Morris

Honors College Theses

Increasing collaboration between suppliers and buyers is a goal of every firm. Researchers have discovered multiple aspects that can affect this level of collaboration including culture. Cultures between firms have been analyzed, however no study has examined how the culture within a firm affects the firm’s collaboration. This study aims to research how the cultural dimensions of in-group collectivism and future orientation can affect firm collaboration and performance. After our analysis, the following relationships were discovered: in-group collectivism and future orientation positively affect collaboration, and collaboration positively affects the individual’s perception of organizational support.

Are Consensus Ratings Of Functional Job Analysis Scales More Reliable Than Ratings Made By Independent Raters?, Greg A. Chung-Yan, Aaron C. H. Schat, Steven F. Cronshaw

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

This study addresses an open research question in regard to a well-established and widely-used job analysis system, Functional Job Analysis (FJA): Are consensus ratings of the FJA scales more reliable than the independent scale ratings that are the norm in job analysis application and the related research literature? In our experimental study, we found that this is not the case: no significant difference is found between consensus and independent ratings of the FJA scales. The reasons for this finding are explored as well as its relevance to the validity of the FJA system. Implications for other work and job analysis …

A New Scoring Procedure In Assessment Centers: Insights From Interaction Analysis, Janneke K. Oostrom, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Ute-Christine Klehe Jul 2019

A New Scoring Procedure In Assessment Centers: Insights From Interaction Analysis, Janneke K. Oostrom, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Ute-Christine Klehe

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

This paper proposes interaction analysis as an alternative scoring procedure in assessment centers (ACs). Interaction analysis allows for a more fine-grained scoring approach by which candidate behaviors are captured as they actually happen, thus avoiding judgment errors typically associated with traditional scoring procedures. We describe interaction analysis and explain how this procedure can improve the validity of ACs. In a short research example, we showcase how interaction analysis can be implemented in AC settings. Finally, we integrate our arguments in terms of three key propositions which we hope will inspire future research on more dynamic scoring procedures.

Selection Tool Use: A Focus On Personality Testing In Canada, The United States, And Germany, Stephen D. Risavy, Peter A. Fisher, Chet Robie, Cornelius J. König

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

The purpose of this paper is to provide new data regarding the current staffing practices being used by organizations in Canada and the United States (US) as well as a comparison with existing data from Germany (Diekmann & König, 2015). Data regarding the beliefs of human resource (HR) practitioners in terms of using personality tests in personnel selection is also provided. A geographically representative sample of 453 HR practitioners across Canada and the US were surveyed. Although general mental ability testing has previously been found to be highly valid and cost effective, this selection tool was among the least commonly …

Criterion-Related Validity Of Forced-Choice Personality Measures: A Cautionary Note Regarding Thurstonian Irt Versus Classical Test Theory Scoring, Peter A. Fisher, Chet Robie, Neil D. Christiansen, Andrew B. Speer, Leann Schneider Jul 2019

Criterion-Related Validity Of Forced-Choice Personality Measures: A Cautionary Note Regarding Thurstonian Irt Versus Classical Test Theory Scoring, Peter A. Fisher, Chet Robie, Neil D. Christiansen, Andrew B. Speer, Leann Schneider

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

This study examined criterion-related validity for job-related composites of forced-choice personality scores against job performance using both Thurstonian Item Response Theory (TIRT) and Classical Test Theory (CTT) scoring methods. Correlations were computed across 11 different samples that differed in job or role within a job. A meta-analysis of the correlations (k = 11 and N = 613) found a higher average corrected correlation for CTT (mean ρ = .38) than for TIRT (mean ρ = .00). Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Who Is Conducting “Better” Employment Interviews? Antecedents Of Structured Interview Components Use, Nicolas Roulin, Joshua S. Bourdage, Timothy G. Wingate Jul 2019

Who Is Conducting “Better” Employment Interviews? Antecedents Of Structured Interview Components Use, Nicolas Roulin, Joshua S. Bourdage, Timothy G. Wingate

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

The employment interview remains a unique paradox. One the one hand, decades of research demonstrates that using more structured components (e.g., question consistency, evaluation standardization) can largely improve the psychometric properties of interviews. On the other hand, although interviews are almost universally used, many interviewers still resist using structured formats. We examined the use of seven structure components by 131 professional interviewers, and their association with three types of antecedents: interviewers’ background (e.g., experience, training), the focus of the interview (selection vs. recruitment), and interviewers’ personality (based on the HEXACO model). Interviewers’ background (i.e., training) and the focus of the …
