Product Recalls: The Effects Of Industry, Recall Strategy And Hazard, On Shareholder Wealth, Michael Bernon, Marko Bastl, Wenqian Zhang, Mark Johnson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the effects of product recalls on shareholder wealth of manufacturing firms in different supply chains. Previous research examining this phenomenon is largely uni-sectorial and/or does not consider the interplay of hazard, recall strategy and sector. By utilizing the event study method, this study examines investors' reactions to key product recall characteristics: industry, recall strategy and hazard level, on a cross-industry sample of 296 product recall announcements. The results show a significant negative reaction of share values to product recalls and significant differences between industry type and hazard levels. More regulated …

The Fundamentals Of Accounting: A Series Of Case Reports, William Swede Umbach Jan 2018

The Fundamentals Of Accounting: A Series Of Case Reports, William Swede Umbach

Honors Theses

The Patterson School of Accountancy encourages students to participate in an internship before graduating. These internships occur in the spring of senior year which conflicts with the traditional schedule for completing a thesis. The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College allows accounting students to enroll in this alternative thesis track led by Dr. Vicki Dickinson. Dr. D is the most passionate professor I have encountered in the accounting school and her class was the single most enriching course in all of my major studies. She led a comprehensive study of technical accounting using this set of cases while also setting us …

The Impact Of Mass And Active Shooting Incidents On Residential Real Estate Values, Claire Sherman

Honors Theses

Gun control as a response to gun violence is currently at the forefront of political debate in the United States. The foundation of this paper revolves around crime and real estate supported by background literature detailing external effects on real estate prices to set up the framework for the research on mass shootings and residential real estate values. The findings in this paper are based on 73 events involving mass shootings in the United States from 1996 to 2015. I find that the effect of mass shooting events plays a significant role in the decline in real estate values following …

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, E. Dean Ramsey Jan 2018

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, E. Dean Ramsey

Honors Theses

The following thesis is a comprehensive overview of financial accounting concepts. Publicly-trade companies have to follow certain accounting standards, and the concepts that arise have real-world significance. The purpose of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of these underlying concepts and see how they impact the decision-making processes of companies. These concepts are not uniformly applied to all companies, meaning that accountants have to design unique accounting systems within each company. The goal for accountants is to produce a set of financial statements that are free from material misstatements that can be used by investors. Each section of …

Each case presents a new topic within accounting with support for the given question or issues the client presented. At the end of each case, an outcome …

Toward A Bidirectional View Of Causality In Big Data Analytics: The Case Of Learning Analytics, Marta Stelmaszak Rosa, Aleksi Aaltonen Jan 2018

Toward A Bidirectional View Of Causality In Big Data Analytics: The Case Of Learning Analytics, Marta Stelmaszak Rosa, Aleksi Aaltonen

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Currently most of the managerial literature on big data analytics assumes a straightforward, unidirectional relationship between data and phenomena they describe. Drawing from critical perspectives on big data, this paper posits that a bidirectional view of causality in big data analytics is needed. Relying on the theory of reactivity by Espeland and Sauder, the authors designed a mixed-methods case study involving both interviewing and a computational analysis of a big data set to lay bare the mechanisms at play behind the intended and unintended consequences in a learning analytics system deployed at a major UK business school. The authors argue …

Us Equity Crowdfunding: A Review Of Current Legislation And A Conceptual Model Of The Implications For Equity Funding, Lynda Y. De La Viña, Stephanie L. Black

Management Faculty Publications (Archived)

Recently developed SEC guidelines provide the regulatory framework for Title II of the Jump Start our Business (JOBS) Act of 2012, which legalizes interstate equity crowdfunding in the United States. Concurrently, eighteen states have passed legislation or promulgated regulations that allow intrastate equity crowdfunding. At present, the literature has not addressed what this nascent funding mechanism will offer to investors, as well as, those seeking funding for entrepreneurial projects within the U.S. Therefore, this paper provides a review of current U.S. legislation, discusses the anticipated implications of equity crowdfunding, and develops a conceptual model that demonstrates potential outcomes.

Technological Proactivity: Development Of A Measure And Initial Test, Nora Junaid Jan 2018

Technological Proactivity: Development Of A Measure And Initial Test, Nora Junaid

2018

Achieving effective use of new IT at the workplace can be notoriously difficult. There has been significant focus on the role of the individual in new job-related technology use, but considerations of personality differences and their role in effective use have been limited. Results have been mixed regarding the influence of personality on new IT use, discouraging research in the area. We attribute the shortcomings of prior results to three broad issues. Most personality-IT studies have either (1) used a measure of personality that is too broad and not specific to explain use activities (e.g. Junglas, Johnson, & Spitzmüller, 2008), …

Corporate Prediction Markets For Business Decisions: New Applications, Challenges And Limitations, Jessica A. Zinger Jan 2018

Corporate Prediction Markets For Business Decisions: New Applications, Challenges And Limitations, Jessica A. Zinger

2018

Prediction markets, introduced roughly 30 years ago, are a way to leverage market pricing for information aggregation. Research has shown the markets provide accurate (often superior) forecasts. To date, research has been predominately of an economic nature. Despite numerous articles on the application of prediction markets in businesses (Hewlett-Packard, Google) the management literature has largely ignored the topic. This dissertation follows a three-paper model to begin to address the perceived gap.

Paper one introduces a new application of the market, namely its use as a determinant of employee compensation packages. Employers often claim to utilize a pay-for-performance model. However, principle-agent …

In The Wake Of Disaster: Resilient Organizing And A New Path For The Future, A. Erin Bass Jan 2018

In The Wake Of Disaster: Resilient Organizing And A New Path For The Future, A. Erin Bass

Management Faculty Publications

High-hazard organizations are unique due to their susceptibility to disasters that can have grave consequences not just for the organization, but also for stakeholders, the communities in which they operate and the environment. Though prominence is placed on understanding how high-hazard organizations avoid such events, how they create a new future when such an event does occur is underexplored. The purpose of this chapter, thus, is to investigate how organizations create a new future in the wake of a disaster through resilient organizing. Using an instrumental case study methodology, this study investigates how executives at BP, a high-hazard organization, embodied …

Balancing Internal Controls With Change Management In The Pacific Military Unit, Miriam Seveses Mefford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Federal government managers were advised to strengthen internal controls; the law dictates attestation of effective management controls, and the internal control program is used to detect risks. However, managers lacked preparatory training, with training being overlooked given the increased responsibilities. Managers are assigned the programmatic role regardless of the lack of program standards in knowledge, skill, and ability. The research questions addressed change management components, concepts, and core qualifications relative to program readiness. The purpose of this single case study was to identify and explore change management components contributing to the effectiveness of internal controls. The conceptual framework was based …

Strategies To Sustain Small Retail Business More Than 5 Years, Jennifer Potts

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small business failures have a negative effect on the profitability of entrepreneurs. Many small businesses fail within the first 5 years after establishment. Profitable small businesses contribute to the stability of the local economy; however, when failure occurs the economy suffers. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies used by small retail business entrepreneurs to maintain profitability more than 5 years after business establishment. Using Cantillon's theory of entrepreneurship, with a focus on Miller's entrepreneurial orientation for the conceptual framework, this study included a purposeful sample of 3 small retail business entrepreneurs located in the Milwaukee, …

Competitive Strategies Of Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Peter George Smith Jan 2018

Competitive Strategies Of Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Peter George Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leaders of minority-owned businesses earn less revenue on average than their nonminority counterparts, even when both sets of leaders operate in the same industries. Among the factors leading to this earnings discrepancy is the lack of access that leaders of minority-owned businesses have to high-revenue opportunities. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that some leaders of minority-owned small businesses use to compete for contracts in high-revenue industries. The study population comprised 3 owners of minority-owned small marketing consultancy firms headquartered in the Southeastern United States. Teece and Pisano’s dynamic capabilities view served as the …

Understanding The Unique Nature Of The Adolescent Study Abroad Experience, Mat D. Duerden, Eric Layland, Michael Petriello, Amanda Stronza, Mary Dunn, Shelby Adams

Faculty Publications

Despite rising numbers of adolescents traveling abroad each year, the majority of study abroad research focuses on emerging adults. This study represents an effort to expand our understanding of the study abroad experience from the adolescent perspective. Qualitative data were drawn from interviews and focus groups with, and observations of, participants in the program. Results indicate preparing for and then sharing the experience with like-minded peers, coupled with exposure to a new culture and direct interaction with locals, facilitated a process of reflection and growth with both perceived short-term and potential long-term impacts.

Determining Millennial Food Buying Preferences: Based On Product Marketing With “Buzzwords”, Victoria N. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

This research focuses on the importance on the Millennial Generation and their perceptions of food buzzwords. Since the Millennial Generation is the largest group purchasing and preparing their own foods, the food industry is becoming dependent on their buying preferences. A survey reflected the participants’ demographics and their buying preferences based on a series of food buzzwords when they are purchasing foods. Results show the Millennial Generation prefers “local” buzzwords. As the Millennial Generation continues to purchase foods for themselves and their families, it can be expected their choices will encourage others to do the same based on their family …

The Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Status On Adult Reactions Toward Quantity Surcharges, Wenjing Li Jan 2018

The Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Status On Adult Reactions Toward Quantity Surcharges, Wenjing Li

Theses and Dissertations--Marketing and Supply Chain

Quantity surcharges have been widespread in the marketplace for decades. However, little is known about what kinds of consumers and under what conditions they are more likely to be impacted by this pricing practice. The current research contributes to the existing literature by investigating how a person’s childhood socioeconomic status affects their reaction toward quantity surcharges during adulthood. Across four studies, we find that childhood socioeconomic status has a positive impact on the purchase of a large and surcharged package size. However, when the economic conditions are threatening, the positive effect of childhood socioeconomic status disappears. The current research also …

Boundary Spanning And Leadership Perceptions In Creative Organizations: Evidence From Four Orchestras, Kiho Jun Jan 2018

Boundary Spanning And Leadership Perceptions In Creative Organizations: Evidence From Four Orchestras, Kiho Jun

Theses and Dissertations--Management

My research examines the importance of a particular form of cross-group brokerage in social networks wherein a person represents a bridge between his or her group and people belonging to a different group. Prior research on network brokerage and leadership emergence has failed to distinguish between brokerage in general and the kind of boundary-spanning between groups that is the focus of my research. Moreover, what we currently know about social network brokerage and leadership emergence comes either from highly abstracted laboratory-based work, or it comes research in relatively traditional work organizations with clear formal structures. It is unclear whether prior …

Examining Tourist Non-Purchase Intention Of Peer-To-Peer Accommodation: Impeding Factors And Perceived Risks, Ho-Young Lee

Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management

With increasing trust and utilization of the Internet, the sharing economy is emerging in the tourism and hospitality marketplace. This study focused on tourist non-purchase intention to use peer-to-peer accommodation. To explore the non-purchase intention, the relationship between perceived risk and tourist non-purchase intention to use peer-to-peer accommodation, as well as the relationship between impeding factors and perceived risk were tested. The study employed survey data (N = 280) gathered from active adult U.S travelers who have never used peer-to-peer accommodation before and have no intention to use peer-to-peer accommodation in future. The results showed that six impeding factors (i.e., …

Why New Car Dealers Sell Used Cars: A Structural Analysis Of The Impact Of Used Car Markets On The Automobile Distribution Channel, Dinakar Jayarajan, S. Siddarth, Jorge Silva-Risso Jan 2018

Why New Car Dealers Sell Used Cars: A Structural Analysis Of The Impact Of Used Car Markets On The Automobile Distribution Channel, Dinakar Jayarajan, S. Siddarth, Jorge Silva-Risso

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Most new car dealers also sell used cars from the same physical location. Used cars sold by these dealers are relatively good substitutes for new cars and thus, could compete with the new cars sold by the dealers. Previous empirical research on the automobile market has mostly ignored the presence of the used car market while the analytical literature provides ambivalent suggestions. In this paper, we study how the availability of used cars at new car dealers affects the substitution between new and used cars as well as how it affects the margins and profits obtained by the dealer and …

Retail Salesperson’S Influence On India’S Lonely Consumers, Cindy B. Rippé, Brent Smith, Alan J. Dubinsky Jan 2018

Retail Salesperson’S Influence On India’S Lonely Consumers, Cindy B. Rippé, Brent Smith, Alan J. Dubinsky

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Many consumers in India experience loneliness and social isolation. Some may resort to shopping for a social experience, attempting to mitigate or remedy their situation. Looking to this key emerging market, we investigate how emotional loneliness, social loneliness, and social isolation influence enjoyment of social interaction with an in-store salesperson (ESIS). We also consider whether adaptive selling and predisposition to comply with salesperson input (PCSI) influence consumers’ trust in salesperson, purchase intention, and retail patronage. We utilize partial least squares structural equation modeling with a sample of 303 Indian consumers. Additionally, we provide two importance-performance mapping analyses, which offer additional …

Timing Of Market Entry For New Products: An Exploratory Case Study Of The Success Factors For Pioneering And Following, Eunsang Yoon, Hyeonjin Rim Jan 2018

Timing Of Market Entry For New Products: An Exploratory Case Study Of The Success Factors For Pioneering And Following, Eunsang Yoon, Hyeonjin Rim

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Launching a new product at the optimal time is imperative for the successful entry and penetration in the competitive market. Expectations of customers, responses of competitors, challenges of emerging start-ups, shortening of product life cycles, and global alliance of corporations are some of the evolving factors that are relevant to the timing decisions for a new product. This paper re-examines the timing-related strategic issues, reports an exploratory case study of the ninety-two pioneering or following market entries, and discusses the managerial implications for a firm’s market-entry decisions for a new product or service.

The Consequences Of Business Model Innovation On Market Orientation And Stakeholder Orientation In Disruptive Firms, Zach Moore Jan 2018

The Consequences Of Business Model Innovation On Market Orientation And Stakeholder Orientation In Disruptive Firms, Zach Moore

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Disruption is the new paradigm of business. Nearly a day goes by without the popular business press heralding a new “disruptor” that has come to lay waste to the existing industrial landscape and radically alter the way in which humanity will live. While this may seem like hyperbole, it is not entirely without merit. The past few decades have seen a tremendous growth of innovations that have caused widespread changes in the ways firms do business. As such, it is essential to understand the antecedents and consequences of innovation and disruption on firms.

In the taxonomy of innovation, there are …
