Efficiency Driver In Nigerian Airports: A Bootstrap Dea–Censored Quantile Regression Approach, Obioma Reuben Nwaogbe, Peter Wanke, Innocent Chukwuka Ogwude, Carlos Pestana Barros, Abul Kalam Azad

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper reports on the use of a novel two-stage approach for assessing the efficiency of 30 major Nigerian airports from 2003 to 2013 based on bootstrapped data envelopment analysis (DEA) and censored quantile regression. In the first stage, bootstrapped efficiency estimates are computed. They enable bias correction and testing for significant differences in efficiency levels among airports. Subsequently, bootstrapped DEA results are combined with censored quantile regression to assess the impact of contextual variables—related to the airports’ ownership, location, and network connectivity—on different efficiency percentiles. The results reveal that the intensity of significant impacts regarding airports’ contextual variables may …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 21, 2018, Eric Thompson Mar 2018

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 21, 2018, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 1.03% during February of 2018. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, suggests that the Nebraska economy will grow steadily through the third quarter of 2018. Solid business expectations and a strong labor market were the primary reasons for the increase in the LEI-N. Respondents to the February Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. Further, there was a decline in initial claims for unemployment insurance during February, …

Three Essays On Digital Annual Reports For Nonprofessional Investors: The Impacts Of Presentation Formats On Investment-Related Judgments And Decisions, Yibo Zhang (James) Mar 2018

Three Essays On Digital Annual Reports For Nonprofessional Investors: The Impacts Of Presentation Formats On Investment-Related Judgments And Decisions, Yibo Zhang (James)

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of presentation formats on nonprofessional investors’ impressions of firm performance in the context of digital annual reports. The dissertation implements a three-essay approach.

Essay 1 examines whether the effect of positive/negative financial performance news on nonprofessional investors’ impressions of management and firm performance depends on whether the graphical display of that news is vivid or pallid. Conducting a 2 x 2 between-participants experiment with 470 participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk), I find that when the news is positive, presenting graphs vividly allows nonprofessional investors to have a more positive …

Competitive Models To Detect Stock Manipulation, Jose J. Thoppan, Punniyamoorthy M., Ganesh K.

Communications of the IIMA

In this paper, data from the Indian stock market is used to study the prediction accuracy of various classification techniques that can be used to identify market manipulation. The data contains information regarding price, volume and volatility of various stocks. Techniques like discriminant analysis, a composite model based on artificial neural network – genetic algorithm (ann-ga) and support vector machine (svm) have been used for classifying stocks into manipulated and non manipulated categories. It is observed that the support vector machine based technique gives the best classification accuracy among the three techniques.

The Relationship Of Long-Term Orientation With Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Community, Shahnaz Bashir, Abel Usuro Mar 2018

The Relationship Of Long-Term Orientation With Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Community, Shahnaz Bashir, Abel Usuro

Communications of the IIMA

Some studies have looked at how people from different countries share knowledge, information and ideas but the research is still limited. Therefore, this research takes up the challenge to find out the relationship of societal culture and knowledge sharing in multi-national and cross-cultural ‘virtual community.’

The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively assess the relationship of long-term orientation which influences sharing of knowledge, ideas and information in virtual community among different cultural groups. Data were collected from the world’s second largest multinational PC manufacturing company that serves customers across 160 countries. The analysis from five of the countries specifically …

A Benchmarking Toolkit For Corporate Sustainable Development In Supply Chains, Göran Svensson, Nils M. Høgevold

Communications of the IIMA

The objective is to describe and apply a benchmarking toolkit to prioritize managerial implications for the measurement and assessment of sustainable development in supply chains. A case study approach of a Scandinavian hotel chain, which is well-known for its dedication and commitment to the sustainable development of its business practices, is used. The outcome of a TBL dominant logic consisting of dimensions, indicators and items across economic, social and environmental aspects, which yields various benchmarking priorities of implications for supply chains is discussed. The priority of sustainable development in supply chains depends on the others involved who may have contradictory …

Code Generation On Mobile Devices For Mobile Apps, Nathan Amanquah, Susana Ndede Mar 2018

Code Generation On Mobile Devices For Mobile Apps, Nathan Amanquah, Susana Ndede

Communications of the IIMA

There is both a demand and a need for rapidly developing mobile apps for data management as well as apps for conducting surveys. Much of the code for data management operations – create, retrieve, update and delete (CRUD) is the same, except for the parameters passed. Such boilerplate type code is well suited for code generation. Many tools are available for creating apps for conducting surveys, but are ill suited for data management scenarios since CRUD operations are not supported. The tools available generally require a PC to access the web-based build tool, and do not provide source code for …

Bpm Maturity And Performance: The Influence Of Knowledge On Bpm, Benny M.E. De Waal, Arjen Maris, Pascal Ravesteyn Mar 2018

Bpm Maturity And Performance: The Influence Of Knowledge On Bpm, Benny M.E. De Waal, Arjen Maris, Pascal Ravesteyn

Communications of the IIMA

In order to continuously improve performance, organizations need to control their processes. To do this it is assumed that organizations need a high level of business process management maturity and employees need a high level of knowledge and experience in BPM. Proof of this assumption has not been found in the literature. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine what the influence is, of knowledge and experience of BPM, on the dependence between BPM maturity and process performance. For this study a dataset of 469 respondents from Dutch organizations was collected over the period of 2010 till 2015. …

Equity Culture And Decent Work: The Case Of Amazon (2017), Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Equity Culture And Decent Work: The Case Of Amazon (2017), Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Every year, publicly traded companies hold annual meetings at which management presents a summary of the year’s accomplishments and shareholders vote on a slate of ballot issues, referred to as “proxy resolutions,” that are placed there by either management or shareholders. As in public life, in theory this form of corporate governance relies on a division of authority and checks and balances among shareholders, the board of directors, and company management. In theory, shareholders function much like registered voters, boards serve as their elected representatives, and management operates much like the executive branch to carry out the mandates accorded to …

Introduction, Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Introduction, Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

America faces a reckoning, a crucible of what Reinhold Niebuhr observed more than eighty years ago. Our democratic principles and traditions are imperiled by the power of financial oligarchs and unfettered money flows, which have contributed to massive inequality that, in turn, has given rise to political unrest and a sense of cultural unmooring.

The articles presented here are both descriptive and normative, setting forth a complex social problem with seemingly bottomless proportions and then offering a design or set of remedial actions to alleviate them. Drawing on my professional experience going back to the mid-1970s, I wrote these pieces …

Money And Morality: Pathways Toward A Civic Stewardship Ethic (2012), Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Money And Morality: Pathways Toward A Civic Stewardship Ethic (2012), Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Based on a plenary presentation made at the Ninth Harvard University Forum on Islamic Finance, held at Harvard Law School in 2010, less than two years after the 2008 financial crisis, this article argues for the restoration of ethical values and civic commitments in capitalism and economic enterprise, drawing on traditional religious, theological, and philosophical principles regarding the civic moral obligations associated with building and managing wealth. The article is divided into three main parts. It begins with an overview of reform measures emanating from the financial debacle, including the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and an …

The Accountability Web: Weaving Corporate Accountability And Interactive Technology (2010), Marcy Murninghan, Bill Baue Mar 2018

The Accountability Web: Weaving Corporate Accountability And Interactive Technology (2010), Marcy Murninghan, Bill Baue

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is a synopsis of and set of recommendations emerging from a research project commissioned in 2009 and culminating in a working paper published in May 2010 by the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Mossavar–Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The project was undertaken in the early days of social media and online interaction. Authors Bill Baue and Marcy Murninghan were designated as research fellows to take an in-depth look at implications produced by the interface between newly emerging interactive technology—at that time called “Web 2.0”—and corporate accountability. The …

Improving Impact: Collaborative Multi-Party, Multi-Sector Engagement (2011), Marcy Murninghan Mar 2018

Improving Impact: Collaborative Multi-Party, Multi-Sector Engagement (2011), Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Most people do not realize the full implications of the fact that we live now in an era marked more by networks than hierarchies. Nowadays, power is distributed across boundaries and borders, rather than concentrated in one place—be it a physical setting, demographic group, industrial sector, or professional discipline. Thanks to systems thinking and the ubiquity of digital tools and platforms, there are many more opportunities for lawmakers, policymakers, and economic institutions to collaborate with concerned citizens on critical public issues, thereby breaking the grip of lobbyists, third-party intermediaries, and the power elite. On top of that are recent breakthroughs …

Trusting Harvard: The Cost Of Unprincipled Investing (2014), Marcy Murninghan, Robert A.G. Monks Mar 2018

Trusting Harvard: The Cost Of Unprincipled Investing (2014), Marcy Murninghan, Robert A.G. Monks

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article provides a framework for answering two questions: How can Harvard fulfill its fiduciary obligation as an investor in ways that advance its beliefs, values, and commitments? How can Harvard take the lead in creating a curriculum for students, professionals, and the general public about the civic moral obligations of wealth? While aimed at Harvard, the issues covered are relevant to other universities and tax-exempt institutional investors, because they have a special duty to advance the public interest. Commissioned and co-authored by the noted corporate governance and responsible ownership guru Robert A. G. Monks, it calls on Harvard to …
