Training The Multi-Generational Workforce, Jamie Fredericks Apr 2018

Training The Multi-Generational Workforce, Jamie Fredericks

Hospitality Graduate Student Scholarship

The range in generations of employees is creating differences unseen in the workplace, until now. According to Keene et al. (2015), Baby Boomers were born between 1945 and 1964; Generation Xers were born between 1965 and 1980; and Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. This broad range of ages means that employees can now be anywhere from 22 to 73 years of age. That fifty-plus-year gap is causing frustration, stress, and confusion among employees. Each generation has been influenced by certain social and economic transitions, technological advancements, and organizational developments that have led them to develop different views of …

When Public Recognition For Charitable Giving Backfires: The Role Of Independent Self-Construal, Bonnie Simpson, Katherine White, Juliano Laran Apr 2018

When Public Recognition For Charitable Giving Backfires: The Role Of Independent Self-Construal, Bonnie Simpson, Katherine White, Juliano Laran

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This research examines the effectiveness of public recognition in encouraging charitable giving, demonstrating that public recognition can sometimes decrease donations. While previous work has largely shown that making donations visible to others can motivate donors, the present research shows that the effectiveness of public recognition depends on whether potential donors are under an independent (i.e., separate from others) or interdependent (i.e., connected with others) self-construal. Across seven experimental studies, an independent self-construal decreases donation intentions and amounts when the donor will receive public recognition compared to when the donation will remain private. This effect is driven by the activation of …

Industry Tournament Incentives, Zhichuan Li Apr 2018

Industry Tournament Incentives, Zhichuan Li

Business Publications

We empirically assess industry tournament incentives for CEOs, as measured by the compensation gap between a CEO at one firm and the highest-paid CEO among similar (industry, size) firms. We find that firm performance, firm risk, and the riskiness of firm investment and financial policies are positively associated with the external industry pay gap. The industry tournament effects are stronger when industry, firm, and executive characteristics indicate high CEO mobility and a higher probability of the aspirant executive winning.

Carbon Taxes And Cattle: Evidence From Canadian Feedlots, Brandon Schaufele Apr 2018

Carbon Taxes And Cattle: Evidence From Canadian Feedlots, Brandon Schaufele

Business Publications

Unilateral environmental regulation such as carbon taxation continues to raise concerns over leakage and adverse competitiveness effects. The implications of a carbon tax is especially important in Canada, a country currently implementing a nation-wide carbon price. Still, little is known about the quantitative implications of carbon pricing on the agricultural sector. Carbon taxes are shown to have both cost and output effects for cattle producers and a carbon tax of $40/tCO2e is estimated to reduce producer surplus by $4.67/cwt for feedlots. Of this lost producer surplus, only $3.45 is recovered in tax revenue by the government. Econometric models further demonstrate …

Risky Business: The Correlation Between Sensation Seekers And Entrepreneurs, Matthew D. Buck Apr 2018

Risky Business: The Correlation Between Sensation Seekers And Entrepreneurs, Matthew D. Buck

Selected Honors Theses

This study attempts to determine if college students with sensation seeking tendencies are more likely to have entrepreneurial tendencies due to the risk involved in both entrepreneurship and thrill seeking activates. This study used a combination of the Sensation Seeking Scale and the Attitudes Towards Enterprise test to determine the correlation between physical risk taken in hobbies and taking risk in business. An online survey was sent to 350 business students at a university in Central Florida and 62 valid surveys were received and analyzed. Through calculating the correlation coefficient, coefficient of determination, and t-tests, the author deducted that an …

Internalised Values And Fairness Perception: Ethics In Knowledge Management, Isabel D. W. Rechberg Apr 2018

Internalised Values And Fairness Perception: Ethics In Knowledge Management, Isabel D. W. Rechberg

Publications and Research

This chapter argues for ethical consideration in knowledge management (KM). It explores the effect that internalised values and fairness perception have on individuals’ participation in KM practices. Knowledge is power, and organisations seek to manage knowledge through KM practices. For knowledge to be processed, individual employees—the source of all knowledge—need to be willing to participate in KM practices. As knowledge is power and a key constituent part of knowledge is ethics, individuals’ internalised values and fairness perception affect knowledge-processing. Where an organisation claims ownership over knowledge, an individual may perceive being treated unfairly, which may obstruct knowledge-processing. Through adopting ethical …

Splitting The Bill: Estimating Personal Consumption In Case Of Wrongful Death, Kathleen Ellis, David I. Rosenbaum Apr 2018

Splitting The Bill: Estimating Personal Consumption In Case Of Wrongful Death, Kathleen Ellis, David I. Rosenbaum

UCARE: Research Products

In cases of wrongful death, the decedent’s survivors may sue alleged responsible parties for lost financial support. Forensic experts estimate a deceased individual’s personal consumption rate in order to separate the portion of the decedent’s income spent on him- or herself from the amount available as financial support for dependents. This paper enhances the prevailing estimation process by regressing consumption rates over individual households surveyed by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics in its annual Consumer Expenditure Survey. We contend that this method improves the precision of estimates by accounting for the inherent heterogeneity in consumption among households with …

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover Apr 2018

Risk Consumption, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Rick Stover

Accounting Faculty Publications

Understanding the difference between risk appetite and risk tolerance can deter organizations from digesting too much risk.

The concepts of risk appetite and risk tolerance were introduced in 2004 in The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission’s (COSO’s) Enterprise Risk Management–Integrated Framework. Specifically, COSO defines risk appetite as “the amount of risk — on a broad level — that an entity is willing to accept in pursuit of value.” Naturally, organizations will have different risk appetites depending on their industry, management philosophy, operating style, culture, and objectives. Therefore, a range of appetites potentially exist for distinct risks, which …

Identifying The Competencies Of Middle Managers Leading Successful Strategy Implementation, Zafar Abdulmajid Momin Apr 2018

Identifying The Competencies Of Middle Managers Leading Successful Strategy Implementation, Zafar Abdulmajid Momin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

How does one successfully implement strategy? Persistent and alarmingly high failure rates of strategy implementation still prevail due to the myriad variables and complexities associated with execution, the brunt of which typically falls to middle management. Unfortunately, most organizations do not exercise sufficient rigor in the process and criteria to select the right middle managers for executing strategy, despite middle managers having a substantial impact on outcomes. Business leaders lack the necessary tools and frameworks for competency assessment to support their decision-making. This research seeks to provide evidence that selection of the right middle managers is more likely to lead …

Executive Summary_Financing Climate Resilience: Mobilizing Resources And Incentives To Protect Boston From Climate Risks, David L. Levy, Rebecca Herst

Sustainable Solutions Lab

This report explores the challenges of financing climate-resilience investments in the Boston region. As risks from storm surge, sea level rise, and extreme weather increase, there is growing urgency for pre-disaster investments to reduce physical risk, reduce social vulnerability, and increase capacity for emergency response and disaster recovery. However, these investments face significant barriers, including market failures, capital budget constraints, and misaligned incentives. The report identifies a range of funding mechanisms appropriate at different scales, including general obligation bonds, resilience fees, property tax surcharges, stormwater fees, tax increment financing, business improvement districts, and insurance-based funding. It evaluates these mechanisms using …

Sit Graduate Institute: Moving Sit Towards A Model Of Inclusive Excellence In Diversity, Steffen Glenn Gillom

Capstone Collection

The Inclusive Excellence Model has been used by college diversity offices all across the United States to help streamline diversity policy and foster a more inclusive collegial environment for students, staff, and faculty. It is now time for SIT Graduate Institute to benefit from this model. SIT has a long and rich history of diversity and inclusion work. However, much of that history has been lost or stored away in long-forgotten archives. Also, much of this memory has never been analyzed in a way that increases institutional wisdom. This study takes on the challenge of analyzing SIT’s institutional memory on …

Introductory Guide To Forensic Accounting: A Synthesis Of Scholarly Research And One Student’S Experience, Kayla Miles

Senior Theses

Introductory Guide to Forensic Accounting, found in Appendix A, was created to provide a concise blueprint for building a career in forensic accounting. It provides a lot of useful information for those seeking to gain a better understanding of the profession or learn how they can join it. The idea for this guide came as a result of my own journey to becoming a forensic accountant. I was initially introduced to the forensic accounting profession during a brief conversation with a forensic accountant working for the FBI while I was in high school. Following that conversation, I sought to …

Financial Literacy In South Carolina, Connor Pestovich, Matthew Travis Apr 2018

Financial Literacy In South Carolina, Connor Pestovich, Matthew Travis

Senior Theses

Being wise with finances is a skill that many people tend to overlook as important. There are days when an individual can avoid using certain subjects learned in high school, but very rarely, if ever, is there a day when topics of finance are not used. This could be anything from purchasing food, driving to work, working on a computer, or receiving a paycheck. While most would agree that the ability to handle money wisely is very important, these concepts do not have a high priority of being taught in high schools in South Carolina. More than that, many parents …

Indah: The Unorthodox Rise Of A Columbian Staple, Will Helms

Senior Theses

Over the course of several weeks, I conducted a series of observations at Indah Coffee Co. in order to better understand its marketing and interaction with the neighborhood. After observing the coffee shop several times, I consulted outside sources, a process that is considered to be in the psychological realm of “grounded theory”, constantly comparing them to my own observations. After an interview with Indah’s owner, I began compiling my findings. The following paper is an outline of my findings, including the importance of the product in the coffee industry versus other industries, the power of successful grassroots marketing, and …

The Propensity To Split And Ceo Compensation, Erik Devos, William B. Elliott, Richard S. Warr Apr 2018

The Propensity To Split And Ceo Compensation, Erik Devos, William B. Elliott, Richard S. Warr

2018 Faculty Bibliography

We analyze the relation between the delta and vega of a chief executive officer’s (CEO) compensation and the propensity of the firm to engage in a split. Controlling for other well-known factors, we find that CEOs with compensation that has higher levels of delta are more likely to split their shares. Furthermore, the choice of split factor is inversely related to delta. Our results are economically significant: for the average (median) firm in our sample, a stock split results in a CEO wealth gain of $4.9 million ($84,000).

The Study Of Crowdsourcing In Knowledge Management: The Role Of Employees' Innovative Behavior On Job Performance, Vetrivadivel Vel

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Employees are a main source of innovative ideas via their insights on companies’ products, processes, customers, and competitors. Enterprise crowdsourcing systems (ECSs) are used to collect, refine, and realize ideas. However, only a small percentage of employees submit ideas – about 7.7% at Pfizer, 2% at HCL Technologies, and 3% at Polaris Industries. Why is employee participation low? More specifically, what factors can lead employees to actively use ECS to submit and share their innovative ideas for improving their job performance? In this research, we used a multi-actor dyadic survey to survey 183 employees and their managers and conducted data …

A Meta-Analytic Review Of Competitive Aggressiveness Research, Margaret Hughes-Morgan, Kalin Kolev, Gerry Mcnamara

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Competitive aggressiveness has been at the center of competitive dynamics literature for decades, however there is no consensus as to its primary drivers and performance consequences. Thus, we present the results of a meta-analysis of the antecedents to and consequences of competitive aggressiveness using three aggressiveness components—competitive volume, complexity, and heterogeneity. Leveraging the awareness, motivation, capability framework as a guide of the drivers of competitive aggressiveness, we find that greater organizational size and age, lower slack resources and prior performance, greater market growth, lower market concentration, and more heterogeneous top management teams lead to more aggressive actions. In addition, we …

Director Networks And Credit Ratings, Bradley W. Benson, Subramanian R. Iyer, Kristopher Kemper, Jing Zhao Apr 2018

Director Networks And Credit Ratings, Bradley W. Benson, Subramanian R. Iyer, Kristopher Kemper, Jing Zhao

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explore the effect of director social capital, directors with large and influential networks, on credit ratings. Using a sample of 11,172 firm‐year observations from 1999 to 2011, we find that larger board networks are associated with higher credit ratings than both firm financial data and probabilities of default predict. Near‐investment grade firms improve their forward‐looking ratings when their board is more connected. Last, we find that larger director networks are more beneficial during recessions, and times of increased financial uncertainty. Our results are robust to controls for endogeneity. Tests confirm that causality runs from connected boards to credit ratings.
