Pay Openness Movement: Is It Merited? Does It Influence More Desirable Employee Outcomes Than Pay Secrecy?, Shelly Marasi, Alison Wall, Rebecca J. Bennett
Pay Openness Movement: Is It Merited? Does It Influence More Desirable Employee Outcomes Than Pay Secrecy?, Shelly Marasi, Alison Wall, Rebecca J. Bennett
Organization Management Journal
Organizations are currently moving toward increased pay openness in the workplace; thus, it is important to determine the influence pay communication practices (pay secrecy and pay openness) have on employee outcomes and whether the increase in pay openness is merited and more beneficial for organizations. The purpose of this article is to analyze pay communication’s influence on workplace deviance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Specifically, pay secrecy practices are hypothesized to influence employees to engage in less OCBs and more workplace deviance. Informational justice and distributive justice perceptions are included as mediators. Pay secrecy leads to greater workplace deviance as …

The Characteristics Of Effective Leadership Perceptions Among Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union In Israel, Alexander Zibenberg
Organization Management Journal
The study focuses on the changing of perceptions of effective leadership in organizations as a result of transition from one culture to another. The sample consisted of groups of 132 immigrants and 189 native Israelis. First, the research compares perceptions of effective leadership among Israeli natives with those of immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union. Then the study shows that some perceptions of the 1.5 generations of immigrants are more similar to those of native Israelis than to perceptions of the first-generation immigrants. The results indicate that the process of acculturation does not have an identical effect on …

Addressing Virtual Work Challenges: Learning From The Field, Julia Eisenberg, Aparna Krishnan
Organization Management Journal
Companies increasingly rely on virtual teams. Despite numerous studies examining the challenges of geographically dispersed work, the findings are often mixed. The purpose of this article is to identify themes of challenges associated with virtual collaborations based on academic literature and do a gap analysis with industry trends. First, we identify five overarching categories of virtual team challenges based on reviewing the latest trends in the academic literature: trust and relationships, communication and knowledge sharing, perceptions and decision making, leadership, and diversity. Second, we utilize these categories to qualitatively code and analyze the company data from the Fortune Best Places …

1970 - Geology Of Southern Monterey Bay And Its Relationship To The Groundwater Basin And Salt Water Intrusion
State and Federal Documents Relating to Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties
This report discussed the preliminary results of a U.S. Geological Survey and the State of California joint investigation of Monterey Bay. The objective of the survey was to delineate the groundwater basin offshore, to determine the distribution and locations of fresh water aquifers by locating areas in the Monterey Submarine Canyon and the ocean bottom in Monterey Bay where aquifers might outcrop and thus be areas of entrance for seawater. The report noted that since the early 1940s continuous heavy pumping along the coastal area of the Salinas Valley had depleted the groundwater storage and lowered the piezometric levels to …

1971 - Dwr Bulletin 176, Land Use In California, An Index To Surveys Conducted By The California Department Of Water Resources 1950-1970
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The purpose of the 1971 California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Bulletin No. 176 was to bring the wealth of land information assembled by the DWR over a 20-year period to the attention of public and private planning groups. The DWR and it's predecessor agencies had conducted surveys to monitor the development of California's lands in order to determine the changing needs for water management. In the preceding 20 years, population in California had doubled, resulting in an average annual increase in urban land of more than 50,000 ares and an increase in total irrigated acreage of 20 percent. The …
Two Essays On String Of Earnings Benchmarks, Yiyang Zhang
Two Essays On String Of Earnings Benchmarks, Yiyang Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Essay 1 Abstract
Prior research indicates that equity markets assign a higher valuation to firms that sustain a string of earnings increases (earnings string) and a string of meeting or beating analysts’ earnings expectations (MBE string). However, to date, there is little evidence on the response of debt investors when firms sustain a long string of meeting/beating earnings benchmarks. This study fills the gap in the literature by analyzing the impact of sustaining an earnings string/MBE string on the cost of debt. I find evidence of a positive (negative) association between the length of the earnings string/MBE string and the …

Essays On Ipo Lockups, Wentao Wu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The dissertation includes two chapters. The title of the first chapter is “How Divergence of Opinions Matters: Evidence from Lockup Effects in VC-backed IPOs”. The title of the second chapter is “Short-selling Around IPO Lockup Expiration”.
The first chapter discusses how divergence of investor opinions plays a role in explaining IPO lockup effects in venture capital backed (VC-backed) IPOs. It is well established that IPO lockup expiration is associated with negative cumulative abnormal returns (CARs). While a number of studies have examined these lockup effects, they offer very limited explanations to the phenomenon. Miller (1977) suggests that divergence of investor …

1997 - Salinas Valley Integrated Ground Water And Surface Model Update - Final Report
Monterey County Water Resources Agency Water Reports
In order to fulfill Monterey County's need for a long-term water resources management plan to ensure good quality water, improve existing water quality, and to provide adequate water supplies, the county developed the Salinas River Basin Management Plan. The goal was to stop seawater intrusion, create a long-term balance between recharge and withdrawal, and to provide a sufficient water supply for Salinas Valley up to the year 2030. Due to complexities of the hydrologic process and their interaction on a basin-wide scale, sophisticated analytical methods and tools are used for better understand the nature and behavior of the hydrologic system, …

Two-Pronged Approach To Imbedding Values In Organizations, Evans Lusuli
Two-Pronged Approach To Imbedding Values In Organizations, Evans Lusuli
The Siegel Institute Journal of Applied Ethics
The purpose for this paper is to argue that in order to successfully implement values and develop an ethically conscious or morally intelligent organizations, a two-pronged strategy must be adopted. A two-pronged strategy is an approach that seeks to imbed ethical values at both the organizational level – which, in this case includes the organization’s leadership, and empowering employees at the individual level to do what Mary Gentile (2010) describes in her book, as giving voice to values. Empowering employees to speak their minds when they know what is right is an avenue that enables employees to imbed ethical values …
Athletic Identity, Institutional Support Services, And Transition Factors: An Analysis Of Student-Athlete Perceptions And Implications, John Nowak Kaczorowski
Athletic Identity, Institutional Support Services, And Transition Factors: An Analysis Of Student-Athlete Perceptions And Implications, John Nowak Kaczorowski
Theses and Dissertations
Brewer, Van Raalte and Linder (1993) defined the term athletic identity as the degree to which a person identifies with the role of an athlete and seeks outside acknowledgement of that role. Those who have a high athletic identity tend to be those who have achieved elite levels within athletics. These elite athletes tend to base their self-worth and self-esteem on their ability, performance and the appreciation of their athletic talent, while gradually neglecting other aspects of psycho-social development (Cieslak II, 2004). These resulting deficits have been attributed to what is called identity foreclosure in the literature. High-stakes athletes can …

Weary At Work: A Conservation Of Resources Approach To Understanding Job-Related Boredom, Candace Angela Esken
Weary At Work: A Conservation Of Resources Approach To Understanding Job-Related Boredom, Candace Angela Esken
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite the pervasive nature of boredom in the workplace, there has been surprisingly little theoretical and empirical analysis on the phenomenon. The existing research suffers from several shortcomings preventing progress on job-related boredom including the lack of an agreed definition and a properly developed and validated measure of the construct. This dissertation addresses these deficiencies by first developing and validating a psychometrically sound measure for job-related boredom. Then, drawing upon conservation of resources theory, hypotheses for the antecedents and consequences of job-related boredom were tested using a sample of 199 employees at a large insurance organization in the United States. …
