A History Of Play In Print Board Games From The Renaissance To Milton Bradley, Kelli Wood Sep 2018

A History Of Play In Print Board Games From The Renaissance To Milton Bradley, Kelli Wood

Occasional Papers

This essay considers how a historical legacy of printed games dating back to the sixteenth century in Italy laid the foundation for modern board games like those produced by Milton Bradley. The technology of print and the broad publics it reached enabled the spread of a common gaming culture- one built upon shared visual structures in game boards. Modern board games, of course, relied upon similar rules and replicated the ludic functions of their Renaissance progenitors. But perhaps more importantly, they built upon and perpetuated entrenched narratives about how fortune and morality contributed to lived experiences, presenting their viewers and …

Unequal Hopes, Lives, And Lifespans In The Usa: Lessons From The New Science Of Well-Being, Carol Graham Sep 2018

Unequal Hopes, Lives, And Lifespans In The Usa: Lessons From The New Science Of Well-Being, Carol Graham

Center for Policy Research

Given that we have had historic increases in inequality, as well as stagnant poverty levels for several decades, I will tell the story of poverty and inequality in the U.S. from the perspective of the metrics of happiness and well-being. My research—and the book that resulted—found that inequality is part of this story, but not the only part. The story was much more complicated than I anticipated. One of the most interesting parts of the story includes different levels of hope and resilience across races and places. Poverty and inequality play a big role, but there is much more to …

The Relationship Between Consumer Sentiment Towards Advertising And Ad Credibility, Ad Likeability, And Attention To Ads: The Case With Visual Metaphors, Vivek Madupu, Sampathkumar Ranganathan, Sandipan Sen

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Popularity of ads with visual metaphors are on the rise. The present study examined the relationship between consumer sentiment towards advertising and ad credibility, ad likeability, and attention towards ads when ads contain visual metaphors. Specifically, this study tested ads which are “A is like B’” (comparison for similarity) and replacement type (only either source or the target is present while the other is absent) metaphors. Sixty-four students from a regional university in the mid-west completed surveys. Our study results indicate that when sentiment towards advertising is high, consumers find ads more credible and pay more attention to ads. However, …

Understanding Differences In The Dimensions Of Brand Loyalty Among Generational Cohorts In The Carbonated Beverage Category, Neleen S. Leslie-Piper, Petula Senior Sep 2018

Understanding Differences In The Dimensions Of Brand Loyalty Among Generational Cohorts In The Carbonated Beverage Category, Neleen S. Leslie-Piper, Petula Senior

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study explores generational differences in the antecedents of brand loyalty in the carbonated beverage category. Eight loyalty dimensions were examined across three generational cohorts: Millennials, Generation X and Baby Boomers. Results indicate partial support for the study hypothesis. Significant generational differences were only observed for some loyalty dimensions and in most of those cases, Baby Boomers recorded significantly higher scores than Millennials but were not significantly different than other groups. There were also very few differences between Millennials and Generation X.

Donor Stewardship And Repeat Giving, Faith Hoelscher Sep 2018

Donor Stewardship And Repeat Giving, Faith Hoelscher

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This quantitative correlational study evaluated the strength and direction of relationships between the dependent variables: major giving since September 1, 2009 and average elapsed time between major gifts in relation to the independent variables: number of stewardship activities, stewardship activities occurring within one-month of a major gift, and duration of major giving relationship. Using a multiple regression, a relationship was found between the independent and dependent variables. These results were then affirmed by Pearson r evaluations in an effort to reinforce the importance and significance of the independent variables in spite of the multicollinearity shown for the subset of stewardship …

An Examination Of Alternative Trading Techniques Using Intraday Eur/Usd Currency Prices, Brock Vaughters

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Global financial institutions provide a mechanism for multinational corporations to hedge against exchange rate risk via currency futures contracts and spot exchange rates. Currency managers working at these global financial institutions overseeing EUR/USD spot currency traders lack adequate data to determine if alternative trading tools could increase net gains for their respective firms. The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the net gains from alternative trading techniques that can be utilized by currency managers working for international banks and hedge funds when trading the EUR/USD currency on an intraday basis. A buy and hold strategy, sell and hold …

Optimal Portfolio Choices And The Determination Of Housing Rents Under Housing Market Uncertainty, Gang-Zhi Fan, Ming Pu, Xiaoying Deng, Seow Eng Ong Sep 2018

Optimal Portfolio Choices And The Determination Of Housing Rents Under Housing Market Uncertainty, Gang-Zhi Fan, Ming Pu, Xiaoying Deng, Seow Eng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study proposes a utility indifference-based model to investigate the pricing issue of house rents under housing market uncertainty. Our model not only allows for the crucial features in the housing market, such as market incompleteness and high idiosyncratic risk, but also the interaction of households’ house tenure choices with their financial asset holdings. Our model provides interesting insights into the hedging of house market risk and determination of housing rents. In addition to the parameters describing the expected changes and volatility on stock and house returns, we also show that individual precautionary savings motive, idiosyncratic risk premium, and the …

Board Independence As A Panacea To Tunnelling? An Empirical Study Of Related Party Transactions In Hong Kong And Singapore, Christopher C. H. Chen, Wai Yee Wan, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In this article, we examine a general question: is the legal transplantation of corporate governance rule effective in curtailing agency costs? Entering into the 21st century, we have seen reforms of corporate governance standards in the Far East since the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997, including in Hong Kong and Singapore. These reforms built on the Anglo-American model of corporate governance in the UK and US supported by broad academic literature of connecting better corporate governance with firm value and identifying the association of tunneling or wrongdoings with poor corporate governance practices. The idea is also to provide more checks-and-balances …

A Strategic Value Appropriation Path For Cloud Computing, Abhishek Kathuria, Arti Mann, Jiban Khuntia, Robert J. Kauffman Sep 2018

A Strategic Value Appropriation Path For Cloud Computing, Abhishek Kathuria, Arti Mann, Jiban Khuntia, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud-based information management is one of the leading competitive differentiation strategies for firms. With the increasing criticality of information management in value creation and process support, establishing an integrated capability with cloud computing is vital for organizational success in the changing landscape of business competition. These issues have received scant attention, however. We draw on the resource-based view, dynamic capability hierarchy concepts, and the perspective of operand and operant resources to suggest a cloud value appropriation model for firms. We argue that, to appropriate business value from cloud computing, the firm needs to effectively deploy cloud computing and leverage cloud …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Analyzing job hopping behavior is important for understanding job preference and career progression of working individuals. When analyzed at the workforce population level, job hop analysis helps to gain insights of talent flow among different jobs and organizations. Traditionally, surveys are conducted on job seekers and employers to study job hop behavior. Beyond surveys, job hop behavior can also be studied in a highly scalable and timely manner using a data-driven approach in response to fast-changing job landscape. Fortunately, the advent of online professional networks (OPNs) has made it possible to perform a large-scale analysis of talent flow. In this …

Sexual Harassment Prevention After #Metoo: Employers' Need To Reevaluate, Michael T. Zugelder, Darrell M. Crosgrove, Paul J. Champagne Sep 2018

Sexual Harassment Prevention After #Metoo: Employers' Need To Reevaluate, Michael T. Zugelder, Darrell M. Crosgrove, Paul J. Champagne

Finance Faculty Publications

The complex problem of workplace sexual harassment has now been put in sharper focus by the publicity of high-profile cases and the advent of the #MeToo movement, both of which have educated victims and motivated them to assert their civil rights. Employers can anticipate an increase in reported incidents and will need to reevaluate the sufficiency of their current anti-harassment policies, reporting procedures and support training to prevent sexual harassment. Employers ' should not stop there but should include efforts to create a culture of respect to prevent incidences of sexual harassment in the first place.

When Humor Hurts: The Detrimental Effect Of Humor On Brand Attitudes After A Brand Transgression, Lama Lteif Sep 2018

When Humor Hurts: The Detrimental Effect Of Humor On Brand Attitudes After A Brand Transgression, Lama Lteif

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This work builds on extant research on humor and brand transgressions to demonstrate that the use of humor in brand communication strategies reduces brand attitudes after a transgression. A set of six studies, including a quasi-field study and a field study, show that the use of humor reduces brand trust after a transgression, which in turn, reduces brand attitudes.

“Dirty” Workplace Politics And Well-Being: The Role Of Gender, Jennica R. Webster, Gary A. Adams, Cheryl Maranto, Terry A. Beehr Sep 2018

“Dirty” Workplace Politics And Well-Being: The Role Of Gender, Jennica R. Webster, Gary A. Adams, Cheryl Maranto, Terry A. Beehr

Management Faculty Research and Publications

We build and empirically test an integrative model of gender, workplace politics, and stress by integrating social role theory and prescriptive gender stereotypes with the transactional theory of stress. To examine the effect of gender on the relation between exposure to non-sanctioned political influence tactics (NPITs; e.g., self-serving and socially undesirable behaviors such as manipulation and intimidation) and stress outcomes, we employed a daily diary design with 64 employed adults over the course of 12 working days. In support of our hypotheses, exposure to NPITs––that is, “dirty politics”––elicited a threat appraisal that, in turn, related to the activation of negative …

© 2017 We provide further evidence for the existence of loss aversion in a high-stakes context: professional tennis. Our contribution to the literature is threefold: (1) We provide a theoretical framework as a basis of our investigation, (2) we test the predictions of our model by using a novel dataset for both male and female players from the Dubai Tennis Championships 2013 that not only includes the serve speed but also the serve location, and (3) we employ semiparametric Additive Mixed Models to include smooth one-, two- and three-dimensional interaction effects for modelling the serve speed and placement. Our results …

Homophily And Individual Performance, Gokhan Ertug, Martin Gargiulo, Charles Galunic, Tengjian Zou Sep 2018

Homophily And Individual Performance, Gokhan Ertug, Martin Gargiulo, Charles Galunic, Tengjian Zou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the relationship between choice homophily in instrumental relationships and individual performance in knowledge-intensive organizations. Although homophily should make it easier for people to get access to some colleagues, it may also lead to neglecting relationships with other colleagues, reducing the diversity of information people access through their network. Using data on instrumental ties between bonus-eligible employees in the Equity Sales and Trading division of a global investment bank, we show that the relationship between an employee’s choice of similar colleagues and her performance is contingent on the position this employee occupies in the formal and informal hierarchy of …

Zombie Board: Board Tenure And Firm Performance, Sterling Huang, Gilles Hilary Sep 2018

Zombie Board: Board Tenure And Firm Performance, Sterling Huang, Gilles Hilary

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We show that board tenure exhibits an inverted U-shaped relation with firm value and accounting performance. The quality of corporate decisions, such as M&A, financial reporting quality, and CEO compensation, also has a quadratic relation with board tenure. Our results are consistent with the interpretation that directors’ on-the-job learning improves firm value up to a threshold, at which point entrenchment dominates and firm performance suffers. To address endogeneity concerns, we use a sample of firms in which an outside director suffered a sudden death, and find that sudden deaths that move board tenure away from (toward) the empirically observed optimum …

Investors' Evaluations Of Price-Increase Preannouncements, Leon Gim Lim, Kapil R. Tuli, Marnik G. Dekimpe Sep 2018

Investors' Evaluations Of Price-Increase Preannouncements, Leon Gim Lim, Kapil R. Tuli, Marnik G. Dekimpe

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Several firms preannounce their price increases with the expectation that such announcements will be evaluated favorably by investors. However, little is known about the actual effect they have on shareholder value. Accordingly, the authors present the first systematic empirical examination of investors' evaluations of 274 price-increase preannouncements (PIPs). Results show that whereas the average increase in abnormal returns following a PIP is 0.51%, almost 41% of the PIPs result in negative abnormal returns. To explore this heterogeneity, the authors propose a conceptual framework that focuses on three key pieces of information that investors can use when evaluating a PIP: information …

Monitoring From Afar: Do Foreign Institutional Investors Deter Insider Trading?, Claire Yurong Hong, Frank Weikai Li, Qifei Zhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the disciplinary effect of foreign institutional investors on opportunistic insider trading. Using a novel global insider trading data set containing 35,557 firms from 26 countries over the period 2000-2015, we find that greater foreign institutional ownership significantly reduces the profitability of insider trading, above and beyond the effect of domestic institutional ownership. Using the exogenous variation in foreign institutional ownership induced by MSCI index inclusion, we show that the effect is causal. The impact of foreign investors is stronger in countries with weak insider trading regulations and poor institutional environments, and operates mainly through the monitoring channel, …

Warrants And Their Underlying Stocks: Microstructure Evidence From An Emerging Market, Charlie Charoenwong, David K. Ding, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti Sep 2018

Warrants And Their Underlying Stocks: Microstructure Evidence From An Emerging Market, Charlie Charoenwong, David K. Ding, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Stock Exchange of Thailand provides an ideal platform for comparing the trading characteristics of warrants and their underlying stocks since both of them trade in the same market under identical trading rules. If their patterns diverge significantly, it may be possible for an astute trader to devise profitable arbitrage strategies during the life of the warrants. We find that both their patterns are downward-sloping for spreads, U-shaped for flow toxicity, volatility, depth concentration, and trading volume; and upward-sloping for depth and market order flow ratio. This implies that trading under identical market structures leads to similar trading characteristics. We …

Event-Based Allocation Of Airline Check-In Counters: A Simple Dynamic Optimization Method Supported By Empirical Data, Mahmut Parlar, Brian Rodrigues, Sharafali Moosa

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper studies the real-life problem of dynamically optimizing the number of airport check-in counters to allocate for a single flight. The main feature of our work is the use of empirical data collected at the Singapore Changi Airport, which drives the dynamic optimization model of a parallel queues system. We propose an event-based dynamic programming model that simplifies considerably the optimization analysis even for large-scale problems with 700+ booked passengers. We investigate the following research questions: (a) For a particular flight, what is the optimal number of counters the system should open with and what is the corresponding optimal …
