Meet Grace Ivy

Grace Ivy is a third-year physical therapy student at ETSU. The Memphis native came to Johnson City after first earning her bachelor’s degree in Knoxville and then falling in love with the Tri-Cities region. Scheduled to graduate from the ETSU College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences as a physical therapist in December, Ivy found herself leaving the country for the first time ever earlier this year as part of an interprofessional service trip to Costa Rica. She has also found herself immersed in her latest endeavor – woodworking.

JOHNSON CITY – Things are about to get spooky in East Tennessee State University’s Mathes Hall.

The ETSU Department of Music will host a Haunted House on Saturday, Oct. 20, throughout the building. 

A Kids’ Hour will be held from 6-7 p.m.  Lights will be on, and a clown, superheroes and princesses will be on hand to interact with the young folks.  Admission during this time is free, and $5 suggested donations will be accepted.

The “Real Haunting” will take place from 7:30-11 p.m., with scares better suited for adults.  Admission during this time is $5 per person. …

Current ETSU graduate student and Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies alumna Aynsley Porchak received an Instrumentalist of the Year Momentum Award.

Alumna Becky Buller and alumnus and Program Director Dan Boner received an IBMA award for their work on “Speakin’ to That Mountain,” which won for Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year.

JOHNSON CITY — The George L. Carter Railroad Museum at East Tennessee State University will feature the railroads of the South on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Heritage Days program, scheduled on the final Saturday of each month, will present not only the legendary Southern Railway, but the many lines of the Southeast, from the Carolinas to Florida and outward to New Orleans.

Twenty-three faculty, staff, and students for the ETSU Department of Geosciences and Gray Fossil Site attend the 2018 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This study analyzes the impact of the Miles Trade business in the Brazilian airline industry. This is linked some factors: economy recession, cultural traces, legal flaws and new technologies that led to the creation and growth of the Miles Trade business in Brazil. The impacts over airlines are related to loyalty weakening between customers and airlines and revenue dilution due to the lower prices of air tickets sold in miles. Can Maternity Benefits Have Long-Term Effects On Childbearing? Evidence From Soviet Russia, Olga Malkova

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper quantifies the effects of Russia’s 1981 expansion in maternity benefits on completed childbearing. The program provided one year of partially paid parental leave and a small cash transfer upon a child’s birth. I exploit the program’s two-stage implementation and find evidence that women had more children as a result of the program. Fertility rates rose immediately by 8.2% over twelve months. The increase in fertility rates not only persisted for the ten-year duration of the program, but it reflected large increases in higher-order births to older women who already had children before the program started.
