Communication Practices In Technology Companies., Ruth Casey, Marc Gallagher

Teaching Fellowships

It is contended that the skills or competencies that are required of business graduates by technology companies, range from the ability to communicate complex information about global issues in ways that are accessible to and connect with the general public, to problem-solving and project-based interaction. This represents a shift in the type of communication practice that now characterises the technology company, with its main focus on “agile” frameworks of teamwork. This report examines the context for this development, and explores the role of assessment and pedagogy in preparing the student for these communication competencies, from the perspective of the technology …

A Simple Empirical Investigation Into The Optimal Size Of The Ngdp Target And Level Targeting, Ryan Murphy, Jiawen Chen Jan 2016

A Simple Empirical Investigation Into The Optimal Size Of The Ngdp Target And Level Targeting, Ryan Murphy, Jiawen Chen

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

Abstract This paper constructs an index to study two questions within a growing school of macroeconomic thought, Market Monetarism. This school argues that the central bank has full control over all nominal variables in the economy and is solely responsible for aggregate demand management. To manage aggregate demand, Market Monetarism argues the central bank should target Nominal GDP. We address two issues of contention. First, we measure the optimal size of the optimal NGDP target. Second, we measure the extent to which central banks should engage in level targeting, i.e., whether central banks should correct for past errors when hitting …

Comparison Of Renting Training Aircraft Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Heather Dickerson Jan 2016

Comparison Of Renting Training Aircraft Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Heather Dickerson

Undergraduate Review

Many elements are involved when a pilot is trying to decide which aircraft to pursue for rental. Uninformed new pilots decide to rent purely based upon the aircraft used for initial training, but once more variables are considered, the pilot will realize such an important decision must consider all aspects. Cost typically being the greatest determining factor, horsepower output of the engine, speed, the maximum load capacity, and the maximum altitude the aircraft is able to reach also tend to have a large effect on determining which aircraft will suit the needs of the pilot. Data Envelopment Analysis was used …

Two Tales Of One City: Image Versus Identity, Sattari Setayesh, Kaveh Peighambari, Tim Foster, Åsa Wallström

Business Administration

By applying the concepts of brand personality and attitudinal loyalty of a city as a brand, the objective of this study is to investigate the perceived place brand identity versus image and to empirically examine and compare their relationships with loyalty toward a city as a brand. This is to make a comparison between two groups of internal stakeholders; namely, residents of a city (image) and city officials (identity). The results indicate that there exists a great difference in the components of loyalty between city officials and the residents of the city. The results also reveal that how brand personality …

A Formalism For Plan – A Big Data Personal Learning Assistant For University Students, Timothy Arndt, Angela Guercio

Business Faculty Publications

Big Data-based methods of learning analytics are increasingly relied on by institutions of higher learning in order to increase student retention by identifying at risk students who are in need of an intervention to allow them to continue on in their educational endeavors. It is well known that e-Learning students are even more at risk of failing out of university than are traditional students, so Big Data learning analytics are even more appropriate in this context. In this paper, we present our approach to this problem. We wish to place control of a student’s learning process in his own hands, …

Objective

To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a diagnostic protocol for appendicitis in children, the use of a validated clinical decision rule (CDR) and a staged imaging protocol, compared with usual care.

Methods

We estimated the cost-effectiveness of the three competing strategies using parameters from existing literature as well as a Markov model developed to simulate the effects of exposure to ionizing radiation from a single computed tomography (CT) study in the course of diagnosis. The simulation model was applied to a hypothetical cohort of 100,000 boys and girls, age 10 years, presenting with acute abdominal pain to emergency departments in …

Determinants Of Oil Futures Prices, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington Jan 2016

Determinants Of Oil Futures Prices, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington

HCBE Faculty Articles

This study is directed at predicting the determinants of oil futures prices. We evaluate commodity pricing with oil occupying a special position due to highly inelastic demand. Given the sudden fall in oil prices, there is theoretical and practical interest in identifying the determinants of falling oil prices. While the popular press dwells on oversupply in production as the principal determinant of price declines, we examine additional predictors including call option sales and put option purchases along with the Canadian dollar-US dollar exchange rate and news of future oil prices. Intraday call and put options on NYMEX oil futures were …

The tort, or civil wrong, of negligence can have serious consequences in employment.
