Population growth and rising consumption of meat, dairy, eggs and fish are forcing the world to face the intersecting challenges of how to sustainably feed a population expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050, while also controlling the impact of food production on the planet, on people and on animals. This review acknowledges the absence of a globally accepted definition of animal welfare and then explores the literature regarding different levels of concern for animal welfare in food production by such stakeholders as veterinarians, farmers, and the general public. How a company structures its capital greatly affects its strategic options and its strategic decisions according to contemporary thinking. However, while there is ample literature on how publicly held companies’ capital should be structured, less is known about private companies. Additionally, one or more members of a single family typically own the majority of private companies, and unlike public companies, family dynamics influence these firms’ non-financial and financial goals and strategic decisions. This overlap of family dynamics into the business arena complicates conventional approaches or at least makes conventional approaches more difficult to apply.

Select entrepreneurs are successful for a reason. They have been able to use their alertness and prior knowledge, among other skill sets, to identify and exploit new opportunities. However, when new opportunities are identified outside of their area of expertise, will they choose to pursue these opportunities, or stick to the behaviors that are most comfortable? Social media is a rapidly evolving form of digital communication in the modern age. Brands continue to focus increasing resources on garnering consumer attention on social media platforms and are demanding measurable results from agencies or internal social media marketing teams. To both increase and demonstrate the value of a brand’s social media presence, many companies are engaging in behaviors that entail riskier legal strategies. A great amount of revenue generated by businesses in the global economy can be linked to the trafficking and enslavement of human beings. Yet, the current discourse on human trafficking fails to recognize the magnitude of benefit consumers, businesses, and economies gain from the work of forced and trafficked labor. Moreover, the limited efforts that seek to address this situation have focused on ways to encourage businesses to voluntarily adopt more socially responsible practices. Finding aid and scan (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3075. Letter, 12 March 1848, of L. W. Gunther, Cadiz, Kentucky, to Charles H. Blake, Blandville, Kentucky. He refers to Blake taking delivery of goods from the steamboat Tennessee, reports correspondence from England and France concerning their stave business, and discusses the specifications for the English customer. He also makes reference to a “shipbuilding enterprise.”

This article reports on disheartening trends regarding the disparate access to capital financing faced by Black-owned businesses. Bone’s research published in the August 2014 issue of the Journal of Consumer Research with his co-authors Glenn Christensen (Brigham Young University) and Jerome Williams (Rutgers University) is used to provide an explanation for why Black-owned businesses are not seeking traditional small business loans compared to their White counterparts.
