Providing stewardship information represents the traditional objective of financial reporting while the movement to fair value accounting (FVA) represents a key trend over recent years. Many believe that stewardship requires historical cost accounting due to potential bias and error in fair value (FV) estimates (e.g., Ijiri 1983; ASB 1999; AAA FASC 2007). Further, since FVs dominate historical costs (HCs) for valuation purposes, theory predicts that FVs cannot be used for stewardship (Paul 1992). This paper draws on an existing, but little used, approach to the choices governing the supply of ‘entrepreneurial’, in the sense of ‘residually remunerated’, resources to an enterprise, especially post start up. It focuses in particular on the hybrid ‘own factor demand/supply curve’ to the firm of Bronfenbrenner (1960), but attempts to treat such supply in conjunction with ‘contractual’ employment of resources, thus making use of gearing and portfolio concepts. The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

With a sample of 91 small Turkish firms, this study examines the factors that affect the use of financial statements, and the important information they contain, to make decisions. A principal components analysis identifies three key variables that determine the use of financial statements: experience, confidence, and knowledge. Logit analysis reveals that these three variables are significantly associated with whether Turkish business owners use financial statements to make decisions. These results can help business owners and service providers for these businesses understand what affects their use of financial statements and the process by which financial statements get incorporated into decisions.

Article 3 of the U.C.C. governs negotiable instruments, whereas Article 9 governs secured transactions. The United States and Europe have traditionally taken very different approaches to the regulation of harmful conduct. Previously, European nations relied almost entirely on the public enforcement of laws, whereas the United States relied on a mix of public and private actors. In the United States, private rights of action have played a central role deterring illegal conduct—and, in fact, provided greater deterrence than public enforcers in some areas of law. I find strong evidence that analysts report downward-biased earnings estimates on acquiring firms when the earnings announcement date is within a 60-day window prior to the merger and acquisition (M&A) announcement date. Acquiring firm stocks have a greater positive realized forecast error in cash only transactions on the earnings announcement date compared to acquirers involved in pure stock transactions. In addition, analysts are more likely to upgrade their recommendations of acquirer stocks in cash only transactions compared to pure stock transactions within a 90 day window of the M&A announcement date. In this dissertation, I use Google search frequency to construct a new measure of housing market-level sentiment and analyze its relation with housing prices. I term this measure as the Home Price Fear Index, or Fear Index or Fear for short. The Fear Index is based on Google Search volume for certain real estate and economic terms, such as foreclosure, recession, and market value. In the first essay, I examine the relation between the Fear Index at the national level and the Case/Shiller National Home Price Index. A recent article in Journal of Economic History by Dasgupta and Ziblatt uses bond yields to analyze the political risk of the 19th century democratization legislation of Britain known as the Reform Acts. Dasgupta and Ziblatt find that the volatility of yields is relatively high during periods of legislation, and model the yields via GAM method, concluding that the political risk associated with the Reform Acts was high. I reproduce the study and comparing those times of 'high' volatility to all periods and find nothing to compare high-volatility periods to, suggesting that it is inconclusive whether the Reform Acts were …

Are single stock futures and stock options complement or substitute goods? In this study, I test this research question by examining option trading activity (option volume and open interest) surrounding an arguably exogenous introduction of single stock futures. This event study provides a natural experiment that allows us to make causal inferences about how the presence of single stock futures affects the options market. While it is commonly thought that single stock futures and options are substitute goods, my evidence instead suggests that they are complements. Purpose – This paper aims to explore the challenges facing Irish organisations in the training and development of non-Irish workers. It analyses the importance of fluency in the host country’s language and the approach taken by organisations in relation to language training. In-depth semi-structured interviews provide significant insights for the policies and practices of multiple stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach – The empirical research comprised 33 in-depth interviews conducted with employers, employees, trade unions and regulatory bodies, and an objective content analysis provided insights into the challenges Irish organisations face in the training and development of non-Irish workers.
